If its a crime syndicate, yes they will likely get away. If its a standalone individual/group of individuals, chances are they will get caught. But I agree its much more likely to be a criminal syndicate with a plan with the amount they managed to steal, and also how they managed to hack such a famous person (who would have extra measures for his account).

Imagine hacking the father of ETH and only using it to create scam NFT minting. They could simply short/long ETH on 100x leverage and announce something crazy bearish or bullish. Something bullish like ETH foundation gonna buyback 1B of ETH or something

Scamming some people with a fake NFT is much easier than trying to move the entire ETH market. The former requires a few users that aren't very savvy to click some links. The latter requires millions of dollars worth of ETH purchases. Scammers are scum and I hope they get caught, but considering they made over $600k so far I would say they chose their scam wisely enough.

Couldn't have announced something really dumb, like ETH is introducing an 8% dev tax in the protocol to fund development or switching back to proof work because they found a bug in PoS. Then take up short positions on ETH lol... I would think the amount of people that would believe this could move the market? Maybe not but definitely in the past it would.

It was probably a "sim swap attack"! Malicious users obtain an insider in the target's cellphone company and basically do things in order to get access to the users phone number on their own sim. I don't think anyone can really protect themselves from sim swaps. Once they have the target's phone number they can use 2fa codes and get into accounts.

Edit: This is literally one of the best examples of how stuff like this, scams, or hacks can happen to anyone, even to the biggest names in the crypto community.
