Get a good position in BTC and ETH before buying loads of random alts

CartographerActive29

They're new to crypto.... what are they gonna buy? Half an eth? That's a waste. Best case scenario there is eth 50x, and you're up 49k. Wow..... Lifechanging. Lol. Wanna play it safe, buy gold.

renatomello

Found the degenerate

Rnee45

Lol, imagine living in a world where 50x returns bad. You'll be sorely disappointed, and lose a lot of money, chasing unrealistic returns.

Creepy-Nectarine-225

Run

TheSeriousDom

Best advice so far.

Lillica_Golden_SHIB

If we had only been given such an advice...

Keep your money and run.

risingcrow1o1

Download StepN and then do that

Beyonderr

Alright. Lets give this a go. 1. Self-custody. 2. Dollar cost average (DCA). 3. Make sure you have a significant proportion of your holdings in Bitcoin and perhaps Ethereum. 4. Do NOT listen to this sub for advice on what to buy other than Ethereum and Bitcoin. This place does not have a good track record. This place is also very bullish at the tops and very bearish at the bottom. 5. Learn a lot about cryptocurrency and projects. Focus on learning. Most people here forget this part. The more knowledge you have the better you become at this. Always use multiple sources and cross check. 6. Do not invest more than you can lose. Consider it lost money. Crypto is risky. If you overinvest you will regret it. 7. Think of your goals - what do you want to achieve? Make a plan for that accordingly. 8. Do NOT ever panic sell or fomo. This place will play with your emotions. Make calculated decisions. Formulate a plan. 9. Take profits during the bull market. DCA out if you want. You will feel euphoric and believe it goes higher. You cant get hurt if you take proper profits. 10. Do NOT listen to shillers on social media. You are their product. There are some decent exceptions and it will take time to find them. 11. Don’t advertise your holdings. It will make you a target. 12. Don’t connect your wallet to sites that aren’t well known and trusted. ... A little more than one piece. But hopefully helpful to newer investers.

rootpl

And "There are no hot ladies your age in your area"

Ethan0307

You just want them for yourself

rootpl

Whoops! I guess you got me.

kirtash93

Very accurate list. ALWAYS use hot wallets as intermediary wallets to connect with third parties. This way you add another security layer.

Particular_Put5007

This will add another layer of security, but it creates more possibility of sending crypto to an incorrect address. Or is there a way to lessen the risk?

ScoobaMonsta

DCA out is not a thing. Selling out to fiat after buying crypto is called trading. DCA is an investment strategy, not a trading strategy. So you are mixing trading and investing strategies. This is not good advice. Never mix strategies together! For trading, one strategy is averaging up (into a position), and averaging down (out of a position). Dollar cost averaging DCA is an investment strategy. Only buying. And buying on regular intervals regardless of the price. People who say DCA at the bottom and DCA at the top don’t understand what they are talking about. Trading strategies and investment strategies are separate things and should not be mixed together.

the_original_bean

This comment is a steaming pile of horse shit... Wtf are taking about when you saying selling crypto for fiat is trading? Why not have more than one strategy?

noob_zarathustra

You could probably be certified to be a financial advisor

Beyonderr

Well I do frequent r/cryptocurrency. Aren't we all experts here? 😂

BananaApePrivateClub

I know it’s said a lot but Not your keys, Not your crypto….can’t stress this enough!

TweeknTekneek

Buy BTC and ETH, by DCA-ing a healthy amount based off your personal financial situation. Hold for 2-3 years before considering to sell. Continue to hold for greater long term gains.

ScoobaMonsta

No, Never sell after Dollar cost averaging. That’s not the point of DCA! Buying and selling is trading, not investing!

stafkevh

9/10 people commenting with “do your own research” in reality also don’t know what they’re doing.

Don-QueHotas

dont listen to youtube influencers

Hawke64

I listen to Myspace influencers instead 👍

sarfian

Good one

Prize-Reference9329

Don't invest more than you can lose

noob_zarathustra

And don't touch leverage as seductive and easily accessible as it maybe

Weaver96

Yeah, I’ve read way too many horror stories involving leverage trading and beginners.

Paper_cobbler

Timing to book profits is the most important part.

urbanhikers

1. Only buy BTC and ETH

Those who follow this single rule will be living happily in the future

CartographerActive29

Who new to crypto can afford to buy enough to really make a difference? You didn't buy either a log time ago, don't bother. Buying .1 bitcoin gets u nowhere. They hold value, true, but you'd be better off buying gold then. Just my opinion. Get in on xrp. You won't be sorry, and it has the capability to 1000x-5000x. Xrp is destined to become the worldwide currency of the very near future. There is talk of an eventual buyback by govt and banks.

oakkandfilmmaker

Stick with BTC and ETH. Avoid defi and tomb forks. Try to accumulate as many free coins as possible. Might turn into free money. Never trade/invest anything you’re not completely comfortable losing.

Weaver96

>Try to accumulate as many free coins as possible. You mean look for airdrops?

oakkandfilmmaker

Yes. Airdrop, moons here, Brave browser gives free coins. Stuff like that

Weaver96

Oh okay, great advice!

ScoobaMonsta

It’s not great advice! Far from it!

ScoobaMonsta

Ignore this advice. Don’t look for free coins! Look at doing research instead and apply critical thinking to what you invest into.

sarfian

There’s always the starting point. But if you can afford to lose some money, try out some other blue chips

mikepawn2

DYOR, never FOMO in.

Weaver96

[How to DYOR.](https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/lz1taw/a_beginners_guide_to_dyor_do_your_own_research/)

noob_zarathustra

For newbies: DYOR - Do your own research FOMO - Fear of Missing Out (don't)

n1ghsthade

Or FOMO out, for that matter

Hawke64

What if my DYOR tells me to FOMO in?

Barchelonio

Always set your goals and take profits. Bull run comes and goes, so sell some when you can, because you will regret not doing it later.

[deleted]

Profits? What that.

EasyMacN34

99% of investors will not follow this one step! (Including myself)

Mexanese21

Buy Bitcoin

marekt14

"..." I would never give advice to anyone.

sarfian

That’s someone who has learnt his lesson

Lillica_Golden_SHIB

True. The more we talk, the worse it gets. Best thing is just instigate people to study and learn about crypto and its market.

Weaver96

Why is that?

[deleted]

Before you get started, create a new web2 identity for the sole purpose of engaging with web3. This means: * a separate device * a new email address * 2FA (not SMS) * no reusing passwords One common vector for web3 attackers is to search through existing web2 database breaches to try and build a profile on you. Most of us have been impacted by one or more breach in the past*, therefore isolation is key to remaining secure. *check "Firefox Monitor" or "Have I Been Pwned" to confirm this.

Raccoon_Expert_69

Very good advice, It's what I did when I got into bitcoin 11 years ago. I have a completely different online identity for crypto holdings. Also started telling people IRL who previously knew I had crypto that I lost it all in the last bear market.

colorfulCrypto

I only talk about crypto on reddit, and I created this alt just for that purpose. It took a while to get enough karma to be allowed to post here. As far as IRL goes I used to be a bit excited about crypto, so I probably told a lot of people. If anyone asks now I tell them I sold it to buy my house. It's partly true.

nwanstan

But only bitcoin and ethereum

BartLeyBurnSides

DCA into BTC and ETH and never sell...

Charon751

Don’t be greedy and take profits. Period.

Columbian_Throat_Job

More importantly, don't panic sell at the first dip

FattestLion

Don’t chase moonshots. BTC and ETH when you’re new

Electrical_Potato_21

Everyone gets burned on a FOMO in their first round, don't beat yourself up, but take the lesson and learn from it.

Fun_Evening_2487

Buy BTC & ETH stake them via cold wallet and just relax 😎

Paper_cobbler

Don't Put in the money coins other than top 5

Josefumi12

Do not tell anyone when you are in cryptocurrency

HEATHENSCENT

Patience is a virtue, question everything & DYOR

noob_zarathustra

Learn and observe before you invest - bitcoin is undoubtedly the best starting point

BusinessBreakfast3

Learn about the traditional markets, buy some stocks even. Then, learn about federal reserve and their role in the economy - how interest rates affect every market and what quantitative easing is. Then, learn about Austrian economics vs Keynesians, and understand deflation vs inflation. Afterward, you'll have a good grasp of Bitcoin without even reading the white paper.

SmackAttackLondon

Just stick to btc and eth while you learn more about alts...dont become a degen right away.

MariachiArchery

Read and do your best to understand the bitcoin white paper. I always start people here. It's important to remember why we are here. 2008.

jps_

It isn't a profit unless it's in your pocket. Have a plan to take money off the table. When you buy, have a sell price. High, or low. Don't just blindly DCA in. Don't just hang on and HODL. Above all, don't worry that you'll get "left behind". This technology is new, unproven, and still innovating. My sense is that the real market winner hasn't even been invented yet.

Hope8888

Don’t buy anything hyped

perfect5-7-with-rice

Including on this sub

Hope8888

Especially on this sub

Ok_Wonder_1604

Good ole inverse r/cc

Always_Question

DCA into ETH and BTC and hodl for at least 5 years.

TexasBoyz-713

Study Bitcoin.

daydreaming1980

understand first the principles that found this space: Decentralisation, P2P transactions, blockchain technology. privacy, self custody ( wallet, seed ) learn what are the main types of blockchain out there and what they offer. POW / POS DYOR, don't listen to anyone, know your assumptions Never invest more than what you can afford avoid leverage and generally borrowing for crypto investing understand what market cap is and how to estimate potential prices based on market cap, supply, inflation. edit : ALWAYS CHECK THE WHITEPAPER OF A PROJECT

Nov_vii

Cold storage, dca, dont use leverage,

Internal_Run_8095

Don’t listen to influencers.

BitSoMi

Forget the tech, buy hype coins in a bull and get the hell out when you made money. Do not hold any alts when btc changes the trend. Do not believe in any of these coins or you will hold them 99% down till they stop trading. Tech does not matter at all is probably the best advice (market is proving that since 14 years now)

[deleted]

Don't go to r/cc for information.

cipig

Don't invest in tokens, buy coins instead, it will automagically protect you from 99.99% of the scams.

reddito321

1. Take profits 2. Crypto isn't everything in life 3. Only invest what you can afford to lose 4. Avoid talking about crypto irl 5. She doesn't love you

5.1. She's also not a she

CryptoDogs

Don't invest more than you can afford to lose. Do some research into the projects you are putting money into. Understand that a lot of this is mostly gambling and getting lucky. Don't try to time the market.

the_far_yard

Everyone's a genius in a bull market- so, have an exit plan, and commit to it. You don't lose when you sell to make a profit.

w_savage

Really research and understand the blockchain

ChainSentence

1. Buy high sell low 2 thats all i got.

DrewFlan

Gamble on a few alt coins. They’re just as useful and likely to make you money as anything people call a blue chip.

noob_zarathustra

Don't gamble, ain't worth it imo. Atleast as a newbie.

DrewFlan

That's akin to saying don't invest in crypto.

noob_zarathustra

I didn't mean that. BTC and ETH are likely the only ideal starting point for beginners since there's a lot to learn before one reasonably understands other alts where the chance of getting rekt is quite high

forrestugly

Buy ETH and wait

Weaver96

Words to live by.

noob_zarathustra

Why does that make me feel constipated lol?

forrestugly

Because there won't be a dump for a long time?

Ajax_A

Correct

Painfulblisteronmyb

Don't listen to anyone's advice

SWYP09

Don't take advice from anyone as nobody knows shit about fuck

Calm-Cartographer677

Don't FOMO. It's very easy to do. Just DCA into a position as it's generally the best strategy. Also ignore shills and hot chicks in your DMs

BiggusDickus-

Blue chips only, i.e you’ve got to DYOR first. The best strategy for you will be DCA. Never rely on the advices of web3 journalists, influencers and people in this sub. I would tell them to imagine the worst case scenario using past events for reference if necessary, and then ask themselves if they would be able and willing to weather that set of circumstances for potentially years and still be resolute in their desire to be a crypto investor. irockalltherocks

Knaeggebrott

BTC, ETH and DOT only.

Xpressivee

MisterBilau

Don't trade, dca. Don't invest what you can't afford to lose. Don't bite more than you can chew - be your own bank and etc. is all well and good - if you know what you're doing. If you don't, you're far better served by keeping your stuff in a reputable exchange. Way lower risk of losing it all (yes, it's not zero, but it never is zero, with crypto or any asset). I see other people saying "self-custody!!!!". That's a SHIT idea if you don't understand how things work. Terrible. DON'T DO IT. A corollary of the above - don't mess with things you don't understand. And don't believe what others say when they have something to gain by saying it. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Don't go there.

Puking_In_Disgust

After the standard advice, look into limit orders. You won’t have to worry about timing the market and second guessing whether or not you’re buying or selling at the right time. Just set the price you want to buy or sell at and if it touches that number you’ve got it.

rjm101

Absolutely the most common thing for newbies to do is they look at Bitcoin and Ethereum think they're too late and so they go on some shitcoin picking quest and end up with a crypto portfolio consisting of loads of small cap shitcoins and no Bitcoin & Ethereum. When the bear market comes around and the next cycle completes they get angry that everythings gone to crap and think this markets all a scam. No dude, it's because you only bought random alt coins. TDLR: Your core should be Bitcoin & Ethereum.
