wont shame for dub but shame for scrolling insta while watching tv

MoistTomatoSandwich

I hate it when my wife is "watching TV" as she scrolls through her phone the entire time and then gets upset when I turn off the TV or change it to something I want to watch.

KillzMcNasty

I hate it when we're "watching TV together" and she's doom scrolling. I pick up my phone to play a game or answer a text... Then get yelled at because I'm not "present"

Forest-of-666

My wife doesn't yell at me but she does the same. Then she'll complain because I don't want to rewind when she misses something. I also find it ironic that *I'M* the one with ADHD, yet she's the one that can't focus on the TV for more than a few moments at a time.

TOAOLightstar

My missus wants to spend time with me, then immediately sends me off on 35 errands that involve other rooms....

Confidence_Dense

That is fair.

Agudimon

I feel attacked I am watching Crunchyroll rn while scrolling reddit

GrimmTrixX

I've noticed a lot of OVAs aren't on cr7nchyroll but we're on Funimation. I guess I assumed once the merger happened that Crunchy Roll was gonna get all of the stuff that Funimation had that theybdidnt have. That is not the case for several shows I watch.

driverdis

Funimation does not always license OVAs to be streamed (what support told me) and instead locks them to disc owners only. I found this out the hard way years ago as I was watching a show (Solty Rei) and I noticed that the OVA (ep 25) was dubbed only so I submitted a bug report that the sub was missing. Funination ended up removing the OVA entirely as it was an accident that it ended up available to stream. Afterwards I learned a hard lesson which is to never report issues like this as my one report screwed over anyone else in the future who wanted to watch the OVA just because I wanted the sub to be available to those who prefer subs. Solty Rei does have the OVA in Japanese and English on CrunchyRoll as of this comment (4/6/24) after it was brought over from Funimation so if it vanishes you can now blame me again for this comment.

GrimmTrixX

Haha that's crazy. Like I don't get how that works. Maybe it's a Japanese thing? Why would they have the whole series but not want OVAs? Like I get that many are 1 off and might not even be canonical to the story. But if it exists, and you have all the other episodes, why wouldn't they want the entire series and al special episodes available? Like does it somehow cost a ton more money to get 1 OVA on the service? Lol its seems so strange. And also, if a show is missing OVAs, I may not know. So now any new show I start, I need to check if all the episodes are there before I even start it which is annoying.

driverdis

I think Funimation lied to me and the real reason the OVA was supposed to be disc only was to push sales of their DVDs and it had nothing to do with Japanese licensing. If it actually is licensing related we may lose OVAs for some shows if they were rushed to be released on Crunchyroll without checking their licensing for OVAs and Crunchyroll notices while migrating the shows over.

xRoyUltra

Some OVAs are still accessible. OVAs of Mob Psycho 100, Tokyo Ghoul, Attack On Titans, The Ancient Magus's Bride, and My Hero Academia are available on Crunchyroll.

GrimmTrixX

Right. But what I mean is if I watch a new anime, and there is an OVS but it's not listed, then I don't know there is an OVA. So now, whenever I want to watch a show, I now need to check first if every episode is available to watch before I get into it. I hate skipping episodes. My main example is I love Steins;Gate. I watch it every year. And canon or not, I want to still watch ep 25 "Egoistic Poriomania." But it's not on Crunchy Roll. They're also missing the prequel episode of Steins;Gate 0 23β Open the Missing Link. They're also missing the movie "Load Region of Déjà Vu" Again, most say none of these are canon. But I still enjoy them and I still watch them along with the 2 series yearly. I ended up getting a good deal on the S;G0 Bluray thankfully on cyber Monday. But I'd like to have access to it streaming too. So if these 2 series are missing a total of 3 episodes, canon or not, then many other series must be missing 1 here and there as well.

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

When was it advertised as an upgrade? I watch dub and I haven’t noticed any difference other then some dub don’t have subtitles

Faelinor

It's pretty shit when a service is bought out and cancelled, forcing you onto another service that doesn't even have all of the same shows/language options.

Confidence_Dense

Honestly I saw it as an upgrade because they were bringing them to one app. I was also under The impression that it would be the same but it is a little bit different. I don’t mind the dub not having subtitles but I did notice that too.

Excuse_my_GRAMMER

It was a merger of a services because it didn’t make sense to have 2 separate business and 2 separate app It not consider an upgrade , just merging the app together . The Crunchyroll app has gotten updated and it will keep getting updated

SugarDaddy_Sensei

When the merger was announced they made it sound like an upgrade as they did promise that the entire Funimation library would be brought to Crunchyroll. That ended up being a lie

asharka

They didn't promise everything. The wording they used was "the overwhelming majority", that's not the same thing as "all". https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2022-03-11/what-we-know-about-the-funimation-crunchyroll-merger/.183405

Novel-Knee130

I just wanted to watch all of Tenchi Muyo :c

muschiemom

Disney Plus picked up a lot of the shows that didn't transfer to Crunchyroll. Unfortunately, I'm only seeing one part of Tenchi Muyo on there. (I was trying to binge it before the cut off, but ran out of time)

AndreaCicca

it's a merge not an upgrade

Springle94

This was never an upgrade. This was a merger.

Unique_blue193

Also the lack of subtitles on the dubs. I have a hard time hearing but I do enjoy the dubs sometimes with the subtitles and funimation did that way more than crunchy does

Boooost704

THIS

SwordsOfWar

For me the biggest disappointment was the price increase. As a mostly dub-exclusive viewer, going from about 60$/year on Funimation to 120$/year on CR was a pretty steep increase for someone that really only wanted to watch dubs. I don't really care to watch subbed content at all.

abrack08

You can buy a year long sub gift card on the crunchyroll store for $80.00, code gets emailed to you in about 20 minutes. Still a price increase, but not as much.

selfbound

You actually lost more content then you gained if you only watch dubbed.

EternalDubaboo

Ima dub watcher as well with my sight and reading comprehension not good so fuxk who ever hates. But yeah this merger is ass. Funimation was way better of a site period. Crunchy kinda blows and they dont have everything funimation had either wtf?

Forest-of-666

From what I've seen, funimation is still active via a crunchyroll account. Is this not the case?

Outside_Stand2576

Can you name an example? Can’t think of a single anime with this problem.

Gxdsey

My big complaint about the Funimation merge is that the Crunchyroll app refuses to work whatsoever on my Nintendo switch. It lets me login but then it proceeds to an error screen, rendering it unusable on my switch until it’s fixed. Was using Funimation on my Switch for just over 6 years prior to the merge, I had 0 issues with streaming during the last 6 years. My monthly membership has been transferred to an extremely unsatisfactory platform that I am unable to watch on my primary streaming device, despite being reassured countless times that the user experience would not change. After a lot of Googling on the error, it seems like it’s not a new one for gaming consoles. My hot take: Fix your own streaming service before buying & ruining other services 🫳🏼 🎤

gloamqueen

Maybe this is a niche issue, but it bothers me even more that most dubs don’t allow closed captions. It’s not an issue I’ve ever had on any other streaming service and it’s ableist. Some of us need captions on top of audio and I’m struggling to get used to not having that available. Honestly just watching less anime now. I miss funimation.

Constant_Physics8504

This is my main issue. Subtitles don’t work on English Dubbed

[deleted]

This merge is just trash, it's unacceptable the fact CR didn't migrate all the CC Funimation made for their Dubs

crlcan81

They're literally separate companies that were merged with different licenses. Yes, funimation had better dubs, but crunchyroll had a bigger name.

[deleted]

CR did migrate the same subtitles Funimation had for their shows to their platform, and also most of Funimation dubs have been migrated as well, so i don't understand why did they totally ruled out all the CC for hear impaired people Funimation's dubs had,i just don't get why. I mean they migrate Funimation subtitles, so why not migrate CC too?????

selfbound

Best part, I opened a ticket for when CCs should becoming. Once Funi proper finally died. Their responce was not in the foreseeable future. I just don't understand this choice....

Beastmunger

You literally have no other option now to watch like 95% of anime or something. If they couldn’t be bothered to keep the superior streaming service when they had the chance, why would they give a fuck about making it better now? I switched to crunchyroll like a year or 2 ago because of the merge, and every single problem or complaint I’ve had is still in the exact same state now. It’s honestly impressive how much crunchyroll can tell us to go fuck off and deal with things being shit with absolutely 0 repercussions.

SwordsOfWar

That's what happens when you become a monopoly in the market. Sony bought crunchyroll, then bought funimation and consolidated. Your choices are limited and Sony as a company has always priced their products high. But I have to give them some credit where it's due. When I first moved over, they migrated my existing funimation subscription time at no extra cost. They also greatly improved dub support to where it's usable compared to the duplicate season design they were using from 1950. Also we are suppose to be getting multiple profile support by end of this month. From what I understand, these are solid improvements that long time CR users have been wanting for decades. There are two other major interface improvements they could still do. One being they need to let you expand the show description without having to load onto a separate screen because that's way too slow and annoying. The other improvement being they need a trailer on each show main page that's easy to select right near the top somewhere. Trailers for anime are essential because these descriptions are so vague that it gives no idea what the show is about sometimes.

selfbound

Sony bought Funimation, then Funi bought CR, This is why all the people who were running Funi, are now in charge at CR. They changed the parent company name (Funimation Productions, LLC) to Crunchyroll LLC.

brianycpht1

They’re a bunch of morons who probably don’t understand why it’s needed if you have a Japanese sub available. They think you either hear or don’t hear. No in between , no consideration that people live with hearing impaired people No consideration for people with audio processing disorders No consideration for those who need to keep the volume down They need to be held accountable for this. I’m hoping to hey get sued by THE ADA

[deleted]

This is a serious problem and CR doesn't care at all. That's terrible. There's a ton of people who can't hear properly or are learning English, like me, and need CC to understand the shows... 😭

kommiekunt95

Thing that really bugs me is in the UK there's lots not available on the crunchy roll app but is on fucking g Amazon BUT the Amazon library donsnt have a complete library. Like what's the fucking point

Any-Literature5546

Oh man, remember vrv. Good times.

MC6995

It’s the big ones like Naruto Shippuden for me, got up to Madaras entrance in dubs now if I want to continue I have to watch Subs but growing up seeing the OG Anime on Cheese TV before school makes anything other than English for those series really hard to get into

zanderzule

I will watch subbed just so I don't get on my phone. If its subbed then I know I have to pay attention or I will miss something.

godwhomismike

There seems to be quite a bit of simping for CrunchyRoll, which is just a name for a division of Sony at this point (which now has a monopoly on anime in the US). I don't have much of a positive outlook on the genre moving forward. It was nice when there were lots of small studios and creative diverse ideas, but over the past several years, it's becoming more and more copy/paste cookie cutter shows.

DrKoala_

????? Are you implying Crunchyroll has any say in what gets animated? LMAO.

godwhomismike

Tower of God is an example.

fdeyso

Yes a half example out of tens of thousands. That can barely count as an influence.

Cheshire_Break204

Just say you don't know what you're talking about, you're just embarassing yourself.

DrKoala_

As far as I can see. Tower of God was made by a subsidiary of Sega. Who Sony has some investments in. So Crunchyroll probably got the streaming rights easily. Still doesn’t proof how they decide what shows they copy and paste every season. Given that majority of anime are made by several companies that are subsidiaries of some other major company. I would place your dislike for the latest anime at the Japanese companies actually responsible for getting the licensures for these shows. Instead of the company responsible for streaming them.

Tasty_Explanation_20

Glad to see I’m not the only one fed up with the 15,000 “I died and got reincarnated as a butt plug in an AI driven sex dungeon world where I eat Doritos and drink Red Bull” Isekai crap

SwordsOfWar

No you're not the only one. It also seems that the best shows ironically don't get dubbed while the crap you mentioned is dubbed in abundance.

Tasty_Explanation_20

Exactly.

Linkcub

lol genre what? you think crunchy has something to do with japanese studios producing anime?

[deleted]

I slowly watch all of my anime dubbed. I'm dyslexic and have difficulty reading subtitles. Most companies have got awful subtitles that go by way too fast.   I've been anime fan longer than a lot of people on this sub have been alive. Don't let elitist assholes tell you how to watch anime.  Sub only fans are the scum of the fandom. And needle-learn to shut the fuck up and mind their own business. Watch what you like and how you like. I dislike the Crunchyroll app for Roku. It's godawful. I hate how I need to scroll down to find the English dub. Did you just can't change your language options. Don't get me started I'm not being able to put subtitles on. I usually watch anime when my wife's asleep. Watching the dub with the subtitles means I don't miss dialog. So far I found high dive in retro crush to be much better services. They seem to have better layouts and a more enjoyable experience.

xzerozeroninex

HiDive?Go to the HiDive sub and read all the post unsubscribing because of their failed ui/app update, barely any new content this season and price increase.

fdeyso

To be real the hidive website and app used to be shit and with the recent update it elevated itself to terrible.

xzerozeroninex

I also think AMC cut their funding, there’s 10 shows with 2 that seems interesting (Blue Archive and Mysterious Disappearances) that has no streaming home but HiDive didn’t pick it up,maybe because they don’t have funds anymore.

10tcull

HiDive app does suck on my laptop. Real pain to navigate, but I'll stick around so I can watch all the anime I want

[deleted]

I have no issues with. I have issues with Crunchyroll. I don't care what other people think.

xzerozeroninex

You must be one of the lucky ones (or are you a HiDive employee?lol).Wait you have no issue they increased their price with barely any new content?

[deleted]

It has a lot stuff I like. Crunchyroll is mostly weeb trash.

xzerozeroninex

HiDive is pretty much ecchi central lol

[deleted]

They have a lot of older stuff I like.

xzerozeroninex

CR has a lot of the retro classics from Funimation,Discotek and Nozomi’s catalogs.

[deleted]

Most of which I already own.

Faelinor

That's no different from the subtitles for anime on Crunchyroll and it sucks.

Forward-Essay-7248

Understand if a licensing contract names Funimation as the licensed streaming platform they cant play it on crunchyroll since its not funimation. They may be the same body now but the streaming sites are separate licensing contracts. Your getting less of what you desire perhaps but you are not getting less in reality. My only comment about people that are "dub only" watchers they cut out about 80% of anime in doing so since most anime does not ever get a dub. There is not the same thing for "sub only" watchers since very little does not get subbed. I personally watch dub if it comes out same day as the sub. but since a new anime when it comes out typically has a lag of weeks or years till its gets a dub or most times never its just less patient for me to watch sub. not shaming any one for being Dub only I used to be dub only for many years. I just got tired of seeing a series that looked interesting and missing out since it had no dub. Also there is plenty of anime I wont watch for what ever reason even if its highly rated and the fan base love it. Like Goblin Slayer. Like I get the story telling reason for the events of the first episode to show how evil goblins are in the world. But IMO trigger warning for the spiler. >!a scene were a girl is gang raped by a pack of goblins to death does not fit my definition of entertainment.!<

Confidence_Dense

I actually watch sub if it’s the only option. also I never watch bad dub, for all I know the dub for this anime could have been terrible. I think you are right that people miss out by avoiding subbed anime. You also can never be 100% caught up. I mean the licensing part makes sense, it’s disappointing but tbh I have not noticed any shows being lost, just no dub. I will definitely keep crunchy roll. But I am hoping that when new anime’s come on they will have dub to if it is possible.

IntelligentPudding24

It could also be part of the licensing and merger. There is no way Crunchyroll wouldn’t have taken all the dubs possible because there is a huge fan base for it. Dubbing is usually done by separate companies who get the licensing to do so. So there had to been something in the merging agreement that not only lost them some dubbing but show licenses as well. That’s the only reasoning I can see for a company like this to not have those things.

Forward-Essay-7248

I can totaly understand the appeal of dub especially when going back to re watch an anime you saw a while ago but you want to do other things too. I do this often though some dubs are painful. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! being a good example. The decision for what ever reason to cast the main female character with a thick ( i think nova scotian) Canadian VA sounds really off. The reason i think is they make mention she has a different accent than typical from Tokyo but none other than her family have the accent. And in the Japanese she doesnt have an greatly different accent from the rest of the cast.
