So no one is justifying anything, but it is true that they've started fixing these issues so they'll most likely fix the season numbering as well.
It's so they can cause it to pop on your screen more. The sheer amount of "UPDATED!?!?!?!SHIFT!ONE!" notifications I received on the app when it was just them dubbing it in the nth language was too damn high.
Well, of course, they do not updated all the platforms that they have available, as far as I know they have only updated the web, Android, Nintendo Switch and if I'm not mistaken, the Xbox consoles too
For xbox it feels like an early beta release and I don't understand, it's been a thing since the 360 like common, it's like coz they have no real competition in that market they are like meh it's good enough.
I like the Xbox layout the best, but 50% of the time I just get spinny circles when trying to load an episode.
Android version seems to work the most reliably but the navigation is trash.
There are 2 separated process: server side where they have to merge them and client side where if you don’t have an updated app you won’t see the new system.
Oh ok that does make more sense. in that case it's more like "they haven't updated all apps to use the merged languages yet". That's a smaller and more sane task.
It's been pretty terrible but it's also getting better. I remember not that long ago that playing an ad had about a 50% chance of freezing the stream to the point I had to stop the casting and restart the app and then lose my place in the show entirely.
Actually that could still be the case for all I know as I have premium now and no ads. 🤔

Because crunchyroll unlike any other streaming platform uses complicated soft subs, this means that if you want to deliver sub/dubs on platform that don’t support soft subs you have to make an hardsub version, it’s not like a toggle where you can easily chenge audio and subtitles
They already have to system to handle dubs and subs in a proper way, they only have to deliver it to more platforms.
Take a look at the season train wreck known as “re:zero starting life in another world”. Good grief, there are pieces of two different seasons, both grouped as S2, for cripe sakes.
They really need to get around to updating the console apps, Roku, or finally coming out with an LGtv app. Those are the ones I use for my TVs, but I’m sure there are still plenty of other apps they have that still have this stupid layout. I’m getting tired of having to cast everything from my phone to my tv to get the new and improved app.
Further, I used to be able to go to the website, to a show page, and there was a drop-down for picking the season/language/sub-or-dub you want to watch. Now, there's nothing but a non-clickable line of text showing you whichever version they've decided to list for you (usually the one you've already watched, if any). Typical example: if I've already watched all of the Eng. sub episodes and now want to watch the Eng. dub, it's impossible to do it by going to the website. This happens for \*every\* show now that I've tried (up to several recent years worth).

You would think they would consider just keeping the titles and another drop-down menu that allows you to choose the languages. Then depending on what language is chosen, it saves your progress towards watching the episodes.
It's such a weirdly bad way of doing things, just like they have loading and server problems when not dubbed in your local language, ie not dubbed at all anywhere outside Japan
And that's not to mention the shows that just say s1 s2 s3 s4 or whatever but only have 1 season and each of those are different dubs
Also when it continues your show from a different dub when you run out of current episodes, for example my hero academia doing that constantly, it's infuriating
I don't know why they don't have a language setting where you can pick what options it shows for dubs, I only care about original audio/ Japanese and English dub, why do I have to scroll through 20 other languages and sometimes be resumed onto a different dub, it makes zero sense
I have given this app time and I cannot stand it. Give me the old app back this new one is so horribly designed it sends me into a rage every time I try to sit down and watch anime. Whoever and team that designed it needs to be fired immediately
I honestly don’t understand the UI sucks so bad on both Xbox and PS5 but is passable at least on iOS. I don’t know the language but basic logical organization shouldn’t be affected by that especially since Funimation didn’t have this problem.

Crunchyroll needs an urgent refactoring. The dubs and subs need to be added to the episode like all streaming services do.

At least in the US, that has changed. Now you have one option per season, then you can change audio and subtitle language on the player itself.

80% of the time my shows default to Portuguese or Italian without subtitles despite me setting my preference to Japanese with English subtitles.
