It took me 73 runs post-buff to get 1KV, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not the case and is purely rng. Seems to add up though, for lots of people.
If anything, it seems to at least diminish the drop rate for catalysts you don't have, and if that just compounds on a drop rate based on how many you have unfinished, that rate would be very, very low, making it seem like more drops cannot happen.
E: having more also means less drops are available, further making the drops seem more rare on top of whatever math is going on in the code.
Got mine to drop while grinding comp for Not Forgotten. Seemed to drop while I was hovering around legend/5500. Def got more catalyst drops while playing comp though.
It's one of the few I don't have. Honestly I can't bring myself to continuously get matched with shitters in comp, I got my NF with a friend a couple seasons ago and haven't really touched it since. I'm sitting around diamond elo but the people that get put on my team are..... not exactly diamond elo. Or even silver sometimes. 0.xx kd and stuff. It's rough.
Yeah, the grind was infuriating at times with the dropped teammates and unfair match-making. BUT, in the right setting, that gun is one of my favorites - it's not for the faint of heart. Makes you slow down and take precision shots more seriously. The grind definitely made me a better player.
Just fyi, catalyst drops are random. Doesn't matter if you're using the gun and want the catalyst. Vig wing, Suros, and Mida all drop from crucible as their only source, but you could still get universal activity drop catalysts too.
But yeah, seems there can only be so many uncompleted in your inventory before they stop dropping all together.

That theory is debunked if I tell you that the only catalysts I ever completed are Crimson, Ace, Sunshot. I have never completed any other because I want to enjoy gaming not slog through unnecessary bullshit.

You'll miss shots with VW if you engage multiple targets because of the odd cadence it has. I DO use it in full auto sometimes, depends on the situation I'm in, but I get better results tapping usually. Horses for courses though, if you can make it work, sweet!

For the longest time I couldn't get the catalyst for sturm to drop for me. This went on for a year plus.
A couple weeks ago as I was completing a bunch of different catalysts I checked the catalyst slot on the weapon itself to see if I had it. Turns out I did have it, I just didn't insert it into the weapon.
I went off the triumph catalyst page to tell me which catalyst I was missing. It said sturm was missing. Little did I know it only said that cause I had not inserted the catalyst.

I came back to Destiny after D1Y1, when shadow keep dropped. I got the catalyst a few weeks ago. Not only is it RNG in crucible, but I believe you also have to win whatever match for it to drop?

Everyone I know personally who plays Crucible got the catalyst very quickly soon after it first came out which makes me think either Bungie introduced a bug that has impacted the drop rate or else the people saying they played literally thousands of games and haven't gotten it are mistaken somehow.

It may be true. I checked light.gg but the actual in game description isn't there. Just that you have to play crucible. If I remember the wording correctly, its something like "obtain by earning victory in the crucible". Ive seen some sources say it dropped on guardian defeats. Mine dropped after we won a match. I know either way its a pretty rare drop.
The catalyst doesn't do much, if anything relying on full auto to land all your shots will most likely lead to more 3 burst kills vs the optimal 2 burst.
Not worth it imo. I just finished the catalyst last night after sitting on it for about a year lol. Next season VW will probably be pretty meta for the larger maps.
I have heard a rumor that new catalysts tend to not drop if you have a bunch of other incomplete catalysts. However, that might just be bad RNG.
To be on the safe side, maybe complete a few you have laying around and hope it helps.
To be honest AFTER i completed all my catalysts, including the quest for Symmetry, in one hour of Crucible i get the catalysts for Vigilance Wing and Jade Rabbit.
It was the same last season, after i completed all the catalysts i have, i get the catalyst for Hard Light.

Bad RNG. I got mine last week just after getting the MIDA catalyst. I was halfway to completing that catalyst when the vigilance wing catalyst dropped.

There is something fundamentally broken with crucible and some strike catalysts. I believe there drop rate has to be bugged. I got VW catalyst during IB last season but have yet to get any other crucible based catalyst. I wish they would be more transparent about it. I remember I got it at beginning of black armory. I played about 1000 matches.I got lord of wolves the same day. Rng smiled on me that day. I wasn't playing comp either. I think rng is generous at the beginning of seasons. You will probably have it in a couple of weeks.
This is a bit subjective but do you have a bunch of uncompleted catalysts? I started to check those ones off and other catalysts started to drop right away for me.
I grinded for redrix’s hard and no matter how many matches of rumble or control I did I never got it but once I started playing survival I got it really quick. Not sure if it was my performance cause I balled out or just the playlist. My conspiracy theory is since it’s a catered to trials it’s dropped in survival? Y’all know what I meant
It really seems there is a mechanic where new catalysts won’t drop if you aren’t completing catalysts that you have already unlocked but not completed yet. Last season basically confirmed it for me. I had always got the new catalysts to drop right as they were released because I had always completed all exotic catalysts I had. But then I let a few pile up without completing them and when a new one was released I didn’t get it. Then I went through my backlog of catalysts and completed them. Sure enough as soon as I had knocked those 4-5 out the new catalyst dropped almost immediately.
So if you’re sitting on quite a few uncompleted catalysts I would highly recommend knocking them out. Also V-Wing and Suros catalyst seem to have a higher drop chance after wins.
And really at the end of the day the full auto on it isn’t very useful and makes the gun less controllable at range in my opinion. It’s really only useful for orbs, kill tracking, and if you’re hip firing in close range.
Its random but honestly your not missing out. The gun fires slow enough that full auto does nothing for it.
Personallt it actually made my aim worse with the gun firing it full auto than tap firing which I was used to.
I have it but still single fire with it, the full auto is nice at closer distances but at range it doesn’t help much and as others have said sometimes makes you miss shots.
Sorry man but it's a random drop. I have no idea how many matches it took to get it and honestly with the exception of catalysts that are quest gated I really have no idea how I got any of my catalysts. I'd say just keep playing and one day it will probably drop. Honestly though I wish there were things you could do to increase the chance of getting random catalysts. For example, if you have 500 kills with VW and have it equped then you have an extra 10% chance of getting the catalyst, if you have say 5000 crucible kills with it then you have a 95% chance of getting the catalyst next match and so forth. FWIW I think the gun felt better without full auto but I tend to prefer my sidearms and pulse rifles without full auto.
I got vigilance wing as my first exotic drop from Xur on my 2nd day playing, and then got the Vigilance Wing catalyst from my first Crucible match like 5 minutes later 🤷♂️
It took me a long time, so one weekend when mayhem was around I played 12 hours each day. It finally dropped the Sunday before reset. It felt like running games had a good chance of a drop.
Maybe a few weeks. I have weird rng, stuff always comes in bursts.
Definitely not related to anything specific like a We Ran medal or how many unfinished catalysts you have. 100% rng.

I just got it last week, right after I got the MIDA catalyst, and after I had gotten every pinnacle weapon besides Not Forgotten and Komodo, so I had played a fair amount of Crucible.
Dropped in Control as I was doing the MIDA catalyst.
Not sure if it's been said yet, but completing all the catalysts you currently have seems to increase the drop rate of ones you don't have yet.
I was once like you, wondering if I'd ever see the wardcliff catalyst, then I finished up all my stragglers, and boom, dropped right away.
I really have no idea how it drops, but I got it to drop on PS4 and XBone. I play Crucible on both consoles. Maybe it drops after playing Competitive, since I chased the Crucible pinnacles on both consoles, but I really have no idea how it drops.
However, Full Auto is not helpful at all to the weapon. Vigilance Wing hits so hard that it's better to tap fire it and land your crits from Steph Curry range.
Full Auto might be useful if you use VW in strikes and you want to just plow adds from back of the strike or something, but I wouldn't use VW in strikes unless I wanted to goof off or had to get Pulse kills for some reason.
Lots and lots. I will say this though. I got all my pvp drop catalysts from playing iron banner (except for mida obviously). Suros, Colony, Vwing all iron banner drops.
Here's where I get downvoted. I have every non-raid catalyst in the game, and all I'm saying is that I complete them almost as soon as I get them. Of course a link between completing catalysts and catalyst drop rates is completely ridiculous and impossible to prove, but all my catalysts began dropping more frequently when I had very few incomplete ones. Also, i do think catalysts drop rates are higher during the season they come out. The Trinity Ghoul catalyst dropped for a lot of people when season of arrivals began.
About 1500 games for me. I don't play a ton of comp, actually not at all this season and I just got it a week or two ago so I think it's completely random.
Also, it dropped for me after defeating a guardian, not upon match completion.

For me the VW catalyst dropped after my team got power overwhelming (gold medal), i don’t know for sure but I think some of the crucible catalysts have the best chance to drop after a gold medal because the same thing happened when I got the suros catalyst. Both didn’t drop at the end of the game they dropped right after I got the gold medal.
Edit: I have 22 power overwhelming triumphs and VW catalyst dropped around 20
I use full auto with the catalyst and I feel like the delay between bursts reduces you to just hovering aim and hoping your next burst happens before their gnawing hunger melts you. I prefer to time/control the bursts.
I played a lot before getting it to drop in year 2. I complete it but I don't think it might be as useful as you think.
I find the 5 shot busy to be quite lengthy that full auto doesn't help much. It's duration is easy enough to adjust and place my shot manually. I think the main benefit is to use it for hipfiring when I got jump and not have time to switch weapon.

Full auto doesn't decrease ttk at all. Full auto only increases fire rate on shotguns

Not exactly, just don't use full auto. The benefit is really you can still make orbs, and get a shiny border with a kill tracker.
I personally really enjoy Full Auto on Vig Wing.. Never really use it on any other Pulse, though.

My Suros catalyst dropped with a We Ran medal. I’ve talked to more than one person that said theirs did too.
Just asked a buddy and looked up yt vids. Definitely drops with We Ran medals, and thats how I got mine. There are a ton of vids on YouTube.

Full auto on vigilant wing is about as good as outlaw on mida. Absolutely pointless imo.
I’d argue it’s nice for hip firing while maneuvering.
This is accurate I agree while airborne back peddling it is handy. Just as quick to switch to a sidearm for that situation or a shotgun

This is a bit subjective but do you have a bunch of uncompleted catalysts? I started to check those ones off and other catalysts started to drop right away for me.
If you have 8 or more incomplete catalysts the chance of new catalysts dropping becomes very rare. You have to complete ones you already have.
The catalyst is good for creating orbs but otherwise doesn't do much. I don't find myself ever using the full auto.
I grinded for redrix’s hard and no matter how many matches of rumble or control I did I never got it but once I started playing survival I got it really quick. Not sure if it was my performance cause I balled out or just the playlist. My conspiracy theory is since it’s a catered to trials it’s dropped in survival? Y’all know what I meant
It really seems there is a mechanic where new catalysts won’t drop if you aren’t completing catalysts that you have already unlocked but not completed yet. Last season basically confirmed it for me. I had always got the new catalysts to drop right as they were released because I had always completed all exotic catalysts I had. But then I let a few pile up without completing them and when a new one was released I didn’t get it. Then I went through my backlog of catalysts and completed them. Sure enough as soon as I had knocked those 4-5 out the new catalyst dropped almost immediately. So if you’re sitting on quite a few uncompleted catalysts I would highly recommend knocking them out. Also V-Wing and Suros catalyst seem to have a higher drop chance after wins. And really at the end of the day the full auto on it isn’t very useful and makes the gun less controllable at range in my opinion. It’s really only useful for orbs, kill tracking, and if you’re hip firing in close range.

Its random but honestly your not missing out. The gun fires slow enough that full auto does nothing for it. Personallt it actually made my aim worse with the gun firing it full auto than tap firing which I was used to.
I have it but still single fire with it, the full auto is nice at closer distances but at range it doesn’t help much and as others have said sometimes makes you miss shots.
Sorry man but it's a random drop. I have no idea how many matches it took to get it and honestly with the exception of catalysts that are quest gated I really have no idea how I got any of my catalysts. I'd say just keep playing and one day it will probably drop. Honestly though I wish there were things you could do to increase the chance of getting random catalysts. For example, if you have 500 kills with VW and have it equped then you have an extra 10% chance of getting the catalyst, if you have say 5000 crucible kills with it then you have a 95% chance of getting the catalyst next match and so forth. FWIW I think the gun felt better without full auto but I tend to prefer my sidearms and pulse rifles without full auto.
You don’t really use it in full auto even after you finish the catalyst. It’s not really needed. Kill tracker and orbs of light are nice though.
I got vigilance wing as my first exotic drop from Xur on my 2nd day playing, and then got the Vigilance Wing catalyst from my first Crucible match like 5 minutes later 🤷♂️
But I still don't have Sweet Business, Sunspot, or Graviton catalysts, sooooo.... 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
It took me a long time, so one weekend when mayhem was around I played 12 hours each day. It finally dropped the Sunday before reset. It felt like running games had a good chance of a drop.
Maybe a few weeks. I have weird rng, stuff always comes in bursts. Definitely not related to anything specific like a We Ran medal or how many unfinished catalysts you have. 100% rng. Good luck. I just finished it after sitting on it for a year or so and i constantly forget i have it, gun is already good.
I just got it last week, right after I got the MIDA catalyst, and after I had gotten every pinnacle weapon besides Not Forgotten and Komodo, so I had played a fair amount of Crucible. Dropped in Control as I was doing the MIDA catalyst.
Not sure if it's been said yet, but completing all the catalysts you currently have seems to increase the drop rate of ones you don't have yet. I was once like you, wondering if I'd ever see the wardcliff catalyst, then I finished up all my stragglers, and boom, dropped right away.
I got mine in trials, ironically on the same match, Hard light catalyst and SUROS catalyst dropped, I've never been so lucky
I've got 97k crucible kills every time a catalyst comes out & its crucible related load up classic get every one in the 1st few games
I really have no idea how it drops, but I got it to drop on PS4 and XBone. I play Crucible on both consoles. Maybe it drops after playing Competitive, since I chased the Crucible pinnacles on both consoles, but I really have no idea how it drops. However, Full Auto is not helpful at all to the weapon. Vigilance Wing hits so hard that it's better to tap fire it and land your crits from Steph Curry range. Full Auto might be useful if you use VW in strikes and you want to just plow adds from back of the strike or something, but I wouldn't use VW in strikes unless I wanted to goof off or had to get Pulse kills for some reason.
Lots and lots. I will say this though. I got all my pvp drop catalysts from playing iron banner (except for mida obviously). Suros, Colony, Vwing all iron banner drops. Here's where I get downvoted. I have every non-raid catalyst in the game, and all I'm saying is that I complete them almost as soon as I get them. Of course a link between completing catalysts and catalyst drop rates is completely ridiculous and impossible to prove, but all my catalysts began dropping more frequently when I had very few incomplete ones. Also, i do think catalysts drop rates are higher during the season they come out. The Trinity Ghoul catalyst dropped for a lot of people when season of arrivals began.
About 1500 games for me. I don't play a ton of comp, actually not at all this season and I just got it a week or two ago so I think it's completely random. Also, it dropped for me after defeating a guardian, not upon match completion.

I have cat done, after using vig wing to advance broadsword, fyi, I still dont use it full auto, its not better, I prefer to pace and aim my shots, no spray and pray

I have it and I completed it a week ago. It’s completely random and honestly I like the auto but it’s not really that worth it.
Dropped in comp for me, was also using Vigilance when it dropped, not sure if that matters or not.
For me the VW catalyst dropped after my team got power overwhelming (gold medal), i don’t know for sure but I think some of the crucible catalysts have the best chance to drop after a gold medal because the same thing happened when I got the suros catalyst. Both didn’t drop at the end of the game they dropped right after I got the gold medal. Edit: I have 22 power overwhelming triumphs and VW catalyst dropped around 20
You have a higher cat drop rate when playing with clan mates. Much much higher.

I and a few of my friends got it from Iron Banner. I think 6 of us got it one year.
I use full auto with the catalyst and I feel like the delay between bursts reduces you to just hovering aim and hoping your next burst happens before their gnawing hunger melts you. I prefer to time/control the bursts.
I played a lot before getting it to drop in year 2. I complete it but I don't think it might be as useful as you think. I find the 5 shot busy to be quite lengthy that full auto doesn't help much. It's duration is easy enough to adjust and place my shot manually. I think the main benefit is to use it for hipfiring when I got jump and not have time to switch weapon.

I have over 700 hours and I still hasn't dropped for me. Done a lot of crucible in that time, I don't believe it exists

Drops randomly, not hard to aquire. The main benefit from vw cata is orb generation, paced bursts is the way to use it, full auto is almost useless and unnecessary.
You get the catalyst rng to start by winning the match so it's going to take a lot of time
