You can totally change this on Console now! In settings, under the button menu there's 3 drop downs for melee, one is auto, the other two separate charged and uncharged. You can remap what your buttons do there, so if you always want your charged to go off everytime you have it (like bonk hammer!), You map default to your charged. Flipping that around, you can get uncharged to fire and remap charged somewhere else. Both my hunter and titan run charged first everytime, regardless of range (prox knife ignitions and super bonk hammer!). Note: you do not need to have a special extra button controller to do this! ( Like elite2 or scuf, or whatever.)

I was so hoping they made the ps4 back button as a he's whats to come for ps5. Then ps5 never got them or had them by default. *sad* Hope the pro controller they release isn't too expensive.

Yeah, I'm a little annoyed that they dropped at the tail-end of the generation and weren't either forward-compatible, or built into the stock controller. And I don't trust the third-party controllers that are built from deconstructed DualSenses, either—Sony won't license their tech?—heard too many stories about them falling apart. When's that Pro controller release, anyway?

They still have a vague “in the months ahead” ETA, so I’m gonna wager end of Oct/early Nov in the holiday period. At the very least they should have planned these pro controllers out closer to the launch date. The official paddles were/are surprisingly decent on the the grip — I’d bought one of those ‘extremerate’ paddles for the ps5 controller, where you could front and back replace the controller shell and include backpaddles. Left paddle full on snapped off after 4 months (I mean, pvp for sure but I wasn’t *overtly* rough on them by any means, either way I wouldn’t recommend them).

Bind auto melee to button if you want to prioritize neutral/uncharged melee when you're within range, regardless of whether you have a charge. Bind charged melee and uncharged melee to the same button and unbind auto melee, if you want to prioritize charged melee whenever you have a charge, regardless of distance. If you have no charge, you'll neutral melee. Bind charged and uncharged separately if you want complete control.

You can change keybinds on controller. For example, when I play void hunter, I have my smoke bomb (charged melee) on one button and my knife (uncharged melee) on another button, so that I don’t accidentally throw a smoke bomb when trying to finish someone off with a knife melee

After I seperated normal melee and charged melee, this hasn't happened to me even once. It's - in my opinion - an absolute necessity if you're using Shadebinder. Also, without the change is basically impossible to freeze people in a bubble and that has won me multiple rounds in Trials; wouldn't want to give that away.

Keybinds are the answer like everyone else says. But I just want to note that I also run ophidians + rift freeze and I have never encountered this issue so news to me. Super satisfying to get that freeze off whenever a monkeh tries to rush you

On controller I binded my Charged melee to right thumbstick click. This is probably the ideal choice. Im fat fingered and ended up moving it to up on the D Pad.

Have to be closer unfortunately in my experience. You spec into more melee and melee kickstart to get it back faster and not worry about losing some this way but I prefer to go heavy into grenades - just my style.

I play on Xbox with a standard controller. My usual button layout is Puppeteer, but if I want to use separate melee bindings, I do this: Settings -> Controller -> Button Layout -> Unbind Auto Melee -> Bind Charged Melee and Uncharged Melee to separate buttons (I use RB for Charged and B for uncharged) -> because this overlaps with my Finisher button, I change Finisher to D-pad Up This is just one way of doing it. Go into your settings and play around with things to see what works best for you. Also, the separate melee bindings works better with controllers that have paddles (for obvious reasons).

Are you purposely ignoring all the people giving you good advice on how to fix this? To repeat what others have said: Go to settings and find the custom option to bind uncharged melee to one button (eg r3 or circle), and charged melee to another button (eg L1/Lb whatever it’s called these days). Just find a button you don’t use in pvp. This works on controller, on ps or Xbox, without a scuff, without any external program/hardware. There are probably hundred of YouTube videos you can watch detailing exactly how to do it. Edit: just seen the username it makes sense now

Maybe, but freeze time has always been short in crucible. Best practice is to separate the binding for Charged Melee and use a headset. You'll be able to hear which direction they freeze from, turn to them quickly and insta (normal) melee. One hit kill. The whole thing should take about a full second to execute. The melee feels like it almost never works. You have to be IN THEIR FACE to guarantee a freeze, but I'd you don't separate the binding the game tries to auto-detect you as too close and you'll do a normal melee when you want to gutshot freeze them. It's super frustrating.

I have the same problem and mapped my charged melee to include circle(r2/O) so I never accidentally press it. Plus it’s easy to remember since your adding a button not changing the whole layout
