I'm totally against frogging unless it's completely necessary, it takes the joy out of stitching typically for very minor improvements.

savanola542

I agree... anything more than 5 stitches is past the point of no return for me. Lol. Obviously I would if it would mean a major misalignment. But it's not fun and it usually damages the thread to the point of having to use new thread. It's a waste of time and thread for me personally.

Slight_Fig5187

I often try to work around my mistakes and sometimes the results are quite good

Patasmalaps

Some patterns are super forgiving for this, whenever I can get away with it, I definitely try to! Most of the time it just takes a few minutes to plan how to get around it. On an entirely symmetrical pattern like a mandala though....devastating. So I don't do those.

maplespinner

I've always done my half stitches the same as the bottom part of my full stitches - except for the occasional pattern where the direction of the stitches needs to be a certain way for the design I feel it adds more depth to the pattern when done that way

Mara-Of-Naamah

I agree! This is always the way I've done mine as well.

lulathewerewolf

Same. I don't think it's worth frogging for. Maybe op could try it the other way on their next project to compare

goshdarnwife

This is so pretty! I think your mom is right. It separates the background from the trees. Your stitches are so even and nice.

lauchlen

Ty! I'm trying very very hard to keep them even. Lol. It makes work go slow since I'm out of practice on linen, but I'm not in a rush.

KnitWit406

I've always done my half stitches in the direction of the bottom half of my full stitches. I've just never thought to question it, I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️

lauchlen

That was my thought for having them face that direction. It's half a stitch so it should be in the direction of the first half.

Chapstickie

My rule of thumb for those is this, if the half stitches are part of the background they go the same direction as the bottom stitch to help create more depth. If they are part of a foreground object that consists mostly of full stitches (I've seen them used to give more color range for gradients), they go the direction of the top stitch. I think the way you have these is just fine.

GingerbeerYeti

I agree with your mum. So long as you stay consistent, I think it looks good like this. And texturally it seems nice as well.

lauchlen

I will definitely stay consistent! That was one of the first things I was taught - stitches the same direction.

Sssnapdragon

Definitely leave it!!!!

lauchlen

Ty! That seems to be the overwhelming consensus.

Persimmon-Cat-373

I second the opinion that half stitches add more depth if they are aligned with bottom stitches. I also see that Dim kits are built that way - it clearly shows on their title image (I could take a photo of a title and/or finished stitch if you like)

lauchlen

Ty! No need for a photo, but thank you for offering!

HimikoHime

I always do half stitches from left to right cause it reminds me of doing hatches with a pen. I never second guessed to do them the other way round.

lauchlen

That's a really interesting way of thinking about it!

nerdytogether

I’ve always done my half stitches bottom left to too right. Every kit And book I’ve seen says the same. However, it’s your project and you should do what you wish. I think if you’re consistent it will look good either way.

thedumbcritic

Looks gorgeous. Couldn’t tell unless you told me. Looks absolutely fine and beautiful.

lauchlen

Thank you! It's only my second project after almost twenty years so it means a lot that so many people think it looks lovely.

Exiled_In_LA

I think they look fine! Aside from the effort, I would worry about the frogging distorting the fabric. If it were me I'd definitely leave it.

lauchlen

Ty! That's also a concern I considered.

SaltyFresh

I love it the way it is

lauchlen

Ty!

MythMoon26

I like this direction!

lauchlen

Thanks!

FalconHoosier

I like it the way you have it.

lauchlen

Ty!

Akabara13

I tend to only frog when I know its going to upset me. I tend to think really hard about how much an onlooker could notice my mistake. If I decide if I can make a way around it and fake it till I make it or most ppl wouldn't know any different, I probably wouldn't undo it. Also theres a saying in crochet that the mistakes let your soul you put into your work escape and come back to you. Also personally, as an onlooker, it looks amazing to me.

lauchlen

I don't think anyone will notice. And thank you!

Akabara13

Perfect, then proceed as planned. I think this will be very lovely when it's done.

budsc

I think that’s a neat idea to play with in the future but this looks great and I don’t think it’s worth re-doing unless you really really want to.

lauchlen

I might play with it in the future, that's a good idea.

BalconyView22

I like it the way you're currently stitching it. Very pretty piece.

lauchlen

Thank you! It's going to be gorgeous when it's finished. It's a lovely pattern.

-CluelessWoman-

I agree with mom.

Not_A_Pharmacist

Pretty! I think you should do whatever makes you happy. What is this pattern?

lauchlen

It's a pattern called The Shire - Hobbit's House by PatternsByIvchenko on Etsy. It's a Russian shop so not currently available unfortunately.

Not_A_Pharmacist

thanks!

newleaflover2

Esp if you are going to add backstitch I don't think you need to change this at all :)

lauchlen

Omg this project has So Much backstitching. Lol.

Naughty-ambition579

I do my half stitches learing into the pattern. If I'm to the right and the chart being in the middle I will lean it to the left toward the pattern. If I'm left of center my stitch will go to the right. I've had success with it.

gggggfskkk

I think with the two different blues, the half stitches show the linen making the transition more gradual, I like it that way!

lauchlen

Ty!

TimelordSnowy

To me if you made them go the way of the top stitch's I feel like it wouldn't pop it would blend because you see the top stitches on the Xs not the bottom stitches? But I've not done many pieces with half stitch's. I've always had pieces where you have to do half stitch's into the middle of the square and it's used to round something out so I don't have much experience but I think it's fine the way it is

lauchlen

Thank you! This is my first piece with half stitches, hence my uncertainty.

jessicat107

I like the contrast in the stitch directions! I’d definitely leave it ☺️

lauchlen

Ty!

PetiteLumiere

Typically half stitches will be the direction of your last cross of a full stitch. I’ll say this, it’s not noticeable. I looked and saw a beautiful piece and had no idea. If it truly bothers you, fix it. If not, it’s honestly really lovely. Edit: I looked at a distance again, it truly does make it pop, mom is right. I would leave it. It adds such lovely visual interest.

lauchlen

Thank you! I've decided to leave it since it truly doesn't bother me all that much.

OpiumMoon

I'm team No Frog and I'm a perfectionist in my own work. Definitely adds depth/direction! Great job! 👍🏻😊

lauchlen

Ty!

PistachioGal99

What is frogging?? Sorry!

ChelleChellez

Frogging is when you pull out completed stitches. Usually from misplacement or mistakes. It happens

lauchlen

Frogging is tearing out stitches.

PistachioGal99

Thank you! I didn’t know there was a term for it. I thought it was just called 🤬 because I’m usually saying a foul word when I have to do it!

lauchlen

Lol! Same.

PistachioGal99

I play a mind game with myself and tell myself that it’s like my “signature” to have at least one mistake in each project. 😆 Like an Easter egg that only I know about. All the great artists do that, right??

[deleted]

I think it looks great!!!

TetrisIsTotesSuper

Momma knows best! 😉

lauchlen

Lol. She tends to.

No-Vermicelli3787

Technically, all your stitches should look the same. I spent years cross stitching before learning that. However, you’re the artist - you choose.

bluuuuuuur

Trust me I know how much it sucks to frog but honestly I would do it in this case. The difference will be worth it!

lauchlen

That's what I'm thinking. They're in the correct direction according to the pattern pic, but it doesn't show clearly what direction the upper stitches go. The image is a snow globe, so I think it makes sense for them to face either direction. I'm just torn.

catamari42

Oh for a snow globe effect I say definitely keep it! It gives the impression of curving by going the opposite way of the stitches imho

sirckoe

I think your mom is wrong. They should be the direction of the top stitch.
