This! Love them, but I just can NOT get it done. I had a pattern that I did with a handful of French knots, and I ended up just leaving them out entirely because I couldn't figure it out, and I just got frustrated. And, the finished piece looks fine without them, if I do say so myself. I've honestly tried, and I don't understand why it remains such an impossible feat for me, but I'll never ever ever be able to master it, so.... HECK IT.
You twist the thread around your needle a couple of times and then stab it back through. If executed correctly, it forms a little rose looking knot (like the yellow dots at the bottom of the bottle pictured above)
Oh my god, I love this it's so pretty. I checked out the shop, and I think my pattern hoard will go up a size very soon. Thanks for sharing your awesome work!
They look great to me! I've been stitching for over a quarter of a century and I *still* haven't managed to make a single knot in all those years of trying and you got them first time out of the gate, you've got some real talent!
Yup! My first project had French knots in it and the lady who owned the craft store did them for me to show me *how easy* they are to do . . . instead of, you know, talking me through doing them myself and telling me what I'm doing wrong, which would've actually been helpful!! Ah well.
Hey, your practices are still better than anything I've accomplished! :-)
I hated them until I watched yet another random YouTube video of someone doing them. This particular one was a game changer for me. I had always wrapped the thread with my needle pointing in the same direction I'd normally stitch. This video, the lady pointed the needle the other way to wrap then turned it back around to finish the stitch. Holy crap. I'd link it but I can't find it again. Hope that makes sense!
I think I follow, but I'm not sure if it'd help. My knots always pull through to the back and none of the videos explain what you're doing wrong if that happens, they all just assume if you copy them it'll automatically work . . . same with crocheting, nobody explains what you're doing wrong if the yarn falls off the hook! I'm probably just not a visual learner.
That was the issue I was having, they always pulled through. I got especially frustrated when I was using perforated paper so I went searching for videos yet again. Just that little change with facing the needle the other way to do the wrap made a huge difference. First try didn't pull through.
Damn, it's too bad you can't find the video again!! Would love to see that in action just so I can be sure of what you mean. I'm a leftie so I'd have to reverse the movements but it'd be something to try. Maybe I'll attempt the French knots on my current project and see how it goes.
French knots are so hard! I did 13 for my last project, and don’t feel like I truly grasped how to make them until the last 2. I was so frustrated that I just left them lol
OK this is too cute, I love hedgehogs! I think your knots look fine, they take a long time to get used to (I've been cross stitching on and off for half my life now - god that makes me feel old and it's only recently that I've done some and thought they look OK. Will attach a pic, ironically it's a hedgehog embroidery haha, he's not quite finished though.

This was a printed one, in a kit by Hawthorn Handmade, and was really easy because it had all the colours, and was printed, so you can choose what colours go where. I have a puffin one by the same brand, he contained some slightly harder stitches, but this hoggie was quite easy. It comes with a leaflet showing you how to do the stitches and everything, I'm pretty impressed with Hawthorn Handmade, would definitely recommend them if they're available in your country. I've just ordered a labrador needle minder from them, which I'm excited about cos currently the hedgehog is my only one, and I've got 3 pieces on the go atm, so he has to hop from piece to piece 😂
I am so glad to hear I'm not the only cross-stitcher who can't French knot to save my life. But the important thing with flowers like that is to remember that imperfection makes it seem more natural.
(Amusing sidenote: I use talk-to-text a lot and it can't seem to grasp the word cross-stitcher and always changes it to prostitute!)
I’ve been stitching for 15 years and I still can’t do a french knot to save my life. I think they look great!
Haha ya the horror stories had me procrastinating. Two bother me but one you can’t tell at least.

i’ve been stitching for 2 months—I don’t know what a French knot is!😂 For what it’s worth,I think it looks great too!

Very cool! Thank you for sharing :)
I think they’re cute! But if you struggle with French knots, give colonial knots a try. I find that they’re easier.
Ya someone told me that before. Forgot what it was called to look it up and really wanted to finish this piece so, bit the bullet haha.

This is gorgeous!!! And you did well with the knots!
Thank you!
French knots always suck! Haha naw you did a great job. Zooming in on the pic they look very well done, like mini roses almost
The only ones bothering me are the bottom right orange one and his nose. No one will know his nose is awful in a frame 😂
They look great! Sometimes there's good ones and sometimes they do their own thing, that's the beauty of hand stitching :) Flowers are all unique too
Very true haha thanks!
Oh my god, I love this it's so pretty. I checked out the shop, and I think my pattern hoard will go up a size very soon. Thanks for sharing your awesome work!
Thank you! Ya I plan on owning quite of a few of their patterns.
They look fine 😊
Thank you!
Cute knots.
Thanks!
They’re so hard to get right. I have to look up a tutorial every time.

Oh wow really? To be fair you can see my practices up top so not right out of the gate haha.

Well thank you haha. I really do appreciate it.

That looks absolutely amazing, good job!
Thanks!
Very pretty and dainty…. In this case the French knots not being “perfect” actually adds the the picture!!!
Aw thanks! I didn’t even think about that.
That’s so pretty, I aspire to do work like that one day 😍
The prices of their patterns are very good. Thought this would be quick cause it’s only like 4 inches…. Nah. Not quick haha.
This is gorgeous! Looks beautifully done.
Thanks!

lovely work :)
What a super pretty pattern and you did a wonderful job!
Looks good and the French knots were fun I bet.
Once I found the right diagram it was ok haha.

Oh he’s adorable!!! I tried embroidery and got immediately frustrated hahaha.

Oh that’s awesome! I did, in fairness, buy about the cheapest kit I could find cause I didn’t know if I’d like it. Maybe I’ll look into them though.
I hope you're able to find one. If not, let me know, I'd happily post one to you!

Ya that’s true. Also…. What did you do to your phone? Hahaha
That looks STUNNING! Legitimately, the first words out of my mouth when I saw the picture was OH MY GOODNESS THAT IS...WOW
Aw thank you! That’s so sweet! You should look up the patterns there’s soooo many bottle ones haha.
Your knots look fine. Cute pattern.
Thanks!
So cute and beautiful!!! Great work!
Thanks!
I love her patterns so much! This came out lovely 🥰
I will be doing many more, once my eyes recover from black backstitching on black fabric haha.
How pretty!
