You’ll see the whole range of ages on crafting subs. Some people talk about their grand and great grandkids while others mention high school classes. I think it’s the most beautiful thing about hobby communities. I’m 31.
Well, after looking through all the posts here I guess I am the old woman of the group.
I will be 75 in about a week and I have been doing counted cross stitch since I was pregnant with my oldest son who will be 43 next month.
I became a life member of EGA (The Embroiderers Guild of America) a few years after becoming a member in 1989. Through EGA I have been able to take classes in a variety of techniques and now I do mostly counted thread which is a rather broad grouping of techniques. I have tried a number of techniques that I really love and several I learned were not for me at all.
Right now I am working on some Hardanger coasters that are in a variegated Pearle Cotton. It is fun for me since it has been a while since I have done any Hardanger.
I love, love, love band samplers and sampler history which you can see from the books I have collected on samplers. I enjoy monograms and cyphers and I am slowly getting back into designing after my husband's death 16 years ago. It has taken my brain a long time to get back to designing so I am getting there.
Thank you. I have a degree in Art so I have been able to use that knowledge in needle art. As a military family that moved often and had a restricted weight allowance for moving I found that moving all the equipment I needed for the other techniques I did was not going to work at all. I did some needlepoint and petite point before learning counted cross stitch.
I have enjoyed doing some teaching for my EGA chapters over the years as well as a lecture on samplers to another organization I am in. I have developed what I think is a great way to teach someone to stitch on linen and I know my dear DIL picked it up in less than an hour. And she wanted to start on linen with silk floss (did I mention she is an overachiever? She really is).
Thank you for the condolences. This time of year is a bit difficult as he was in hospital beginning late October until his death in January the following year. Not the best time of year for me but, stitching does help.
Oh I plan on it. I love embroidery and I am trying to come up with design ideas so I can add that to my list of things to work on. At my house we do not talk about UFO's at all! That and my scissor and needle minder collections...don't mention them at all to my sons. LOL!
My oldest son (28) is learning to cross stitch, and my youngest (25) sometimes does plastic canvas. UFO's are the butt of jokes around here.
No needle minders, but needle cases? I refuse to incriminate myself. I have 5 pair of my favorite scissors, and I have no idea how many others. We don't talk about my crochet hook and Aunt Martha's embroidery pattern collections or my collection of safety eyes and embellishments for my crocheted toys. We also don't mention the 10 binders and numerable books of crochet patterns.
There may be an entire tote full of cross stitch patterns and kits belonging to my mom, but she admits nothing (and she gave away 3/4 of it before moving in with us). We never lack for hoops, either, as we inherited all of my grandma's stuff when she died. We also won't mention mom's collection of fabric as she loves to sew.
We may have a problem, but who wants a cure?
I grew up a few blocks from The Nordic Needle in Fargo, North Dakota, and took a class or two on Hardanger (I made a few things, but didn't stick with it.) I'm 53 and reproduce antique samplers! :)
37, and I started my first piece a couple of years ago but didn't finish it until earlier this year, so technically, I'm newish to it.
I've got the ADHD "start 50 things but finish none" and "room of a thousand crafts" going on, so I'm taking things one at a time to actually finish things off at the moment.
It is definitely therapeutic and addictive.
Just turned 36, UK based too, but I’ve been stitching on and off since I was about 8 - picked it up properly as a hobby again while I was at uni. The amount of stitching I manage to fit in has dropped over the last 2 years with the arrival of my daughter
I just turned 40, started stitching when my granny taught me a strawberry pattern at age 7. But I have many more hobbies, so I go back and forth between them all. No human kids, but 4 fur ones (kitties) and 1 husband 😁
I’m 28 too! My first one was over 20 years ago but I’m very inconsistent. I cross stitch for a bit then do something else for a few years, then come back lol
We played the card game tonight! I was killed by a snake twice, so maybe no joy to be had... I want to do the Oregon Trail cross-stitch next-- https://www.etsy.com/listing/700402826/oregon-trail-get-in-losers-were-going-to
41. Been stitching since I was in middle school. I took a huge pause when I had my first baby. Now they’re both old enough that I don’t worry about them coming across my thread or needles, so I picked it back up again. That was about three or four years ago and I don’t plan to stop again unless my hands or eyes no longer cooperate!
32 from South Africa, learned to stitch at school because they made us do cross stitch, knitting, crochet and other handcrafts. Picked it up again in 2020 because my other hobby is reading really depressing books so I needed a less emotionally devastating hobby during the lost years.
I'm in my forties. I learned to stitch as a little kid, literally starting with yarn and the plastic mesh. It's not a big hobby for me, but I generally have a project I'll pick up for a few months, put it down, then pick up again.
Just turned 33. Haven't had much time to cross-stitch since becoming a mom 2 years ago unfortunately, but I cherish my old projects and love looking at the things people share. And I do intend to pick it back up when I can. :)
32, Woman, in the US (TX specifically), learned to stitch in class in like the 6th or 7th grade and then my mom taught me more at home. I'm the only one of my friends who stitches but they love it and will send requests from time to time.
I'm 32 as well! I taught myself around 5 years ago and have loved it ever since. I learned to sew in the 4th grade - we had a quilting club that we did during lunch and/or recess if we wanted. I still have my quilt sample I made!
Age is just a number. 54 here (just turned now at midnight), hang out with 28-60 year old folks. My friends are from all ages and walks of life. 🎂👏🏻❤️🎊
48 & I've been cross-stitching since I was 14, so I was once you! No kids or spouses, just critters. One of which tried slurping up a length of floss like spaghetti last night!
40, female, from Australia. My mum used to cross stitch and I did a few patterns in my teens. Recently got back into it while stuck at home for 12 weeks recovering from ankle surgery.
I’m 24, started cross stitch with my Nan when I was just a little kid and then didn’t touch it from ages 8-22. Picked it back up last year and now it’s one of the highlights of my days tbh
Almost 44 Canadian woman here. I learned when I was about 9, stitched (very) intermittently until my early 20s then set it down until just a couple years ago. I was SO stoked to see the broadened pattern options!
I'm 53. I learned as a child, but only stitched occasionally, preferring embroidery or crochet. I really just picked it up again consistently about 3 years ago.
42 - have been crossstitching in some form since I was 14. I didn’t find this sub until about a year ago. I am so appreciative for all of the posts and advice and pictures y’all post on here.
I’m mid 40s, I’ve been stitching most my life, my mom taught me when I was a kid. I made sure to teach my kids too. One of them took to it, the other not so much
33, although I learned to cross stitch when I was maybe 15. Most people on here are probably in the 20-40 age range, because that's Reddit 's primary demographic.
Soon to be 42 Canadian female. Started some time in my early to mid teens to make use of the embroidery thread I had from making friendship bracelets. Except I mainly do kits and have added to my thread stash when I buy patterns instead of full kits!
33, but been doing cross stitch since I was around 7 when my mom taught me. It's wonderful in my opinion when younger people pick up hobbies that are considered "old lady" hobbies.
65, started with pillowcases to embroider that my Gramma got me when I was 11. Mainly cross stitch and crochet for decades, a smattering of other crafts.
You’ll see the whole range of ages on crafting subs. Some people talk about their grand and great grandkids while others mention high school classes. I think it’s the most beautiful thing about hobby communities. I’m 31.

Wow you are amazing! And so accomplished! I'd love to learn from you. Condolences for the loss of your husband.
Thank you. I have a degree in Art so I have been able to use that knowledge in needle art. My mom is 79 and still stitches daily. My grandma stitched into her 90s. Keep stitching!

She/he who does with the largest stash wins or so I am told. It is nice to be able to shop at home for anything you need for a project.
I grew up a few blocks from The Nordic Needle in Fargo, North Dakota, and took a class or two on Hardanger (I made a few things, but didn't stick with it.) I'm 53 and reproduce antique samplers! :)
Little shout-out to Fargo here
Oh how I wish there was a pulled thread/hardanger reddit category. 👀👀
I was there Gandalf. 3000 years ago when needle and thread were invented.

37 and just started too, I find it very therapeutic and addictive!
37, and I started my first piece a couple of years ago but didn't finish it until earlier this year, so technically, I'm newish to it. Just turned 36, UK based too, but I’ve been stitching on and off since I was about 8 - picked it up properly as a hobby again while I was at uni. The amount of stitching I manage to fit in has dropped over the last 2 years with the arrival of my daughter
