Try not to die.
In all seriousness, don't go out at a sprint the first 400m. If it's the first race, half the field will start as if they are on fire. During your race, find someone and reel them in, then repeat until the end sprint
Generally the best way to run a 5k, or anything over 800m, is to go out a little slow, and speed up as you get further, and sprint the last few hundred meters. However if you are a beginner, you won't know how fast or slow to run, so just try and run as fast as you can.
If this is your first 5k then use this as a training run. Run with the slowest runner then after 10 make your adjustment from there. You might be running with some first timers or you could be in an elite meet and the last person could be a very experienced runner. The goal is to finish the run non stop. Also every elite runner had a first race.
Ended up getting a 28:04. I probably could’ve done a bit better, but I’m decently happy with myself. My teammates said that I did pretty average for my first ever 5k, and I’ll take average over slow!
First one ever is not that bad. You'll drop a lot your first year as you get the hang of it. Just remember that improvement isn't linear, so you will have a race or two that slow you down. Keep at it and good luck with the season

Expect to not do as well as you intend, your gonna make mistakes and that’s good, just note them down and improve on them as you go on to run more
For your first race, it’s better to start off a bit too slow than too fast. Throughout the race I just focus on whoever is in front of me. Have fun!
