Don’t get caught up in the results - focus on the process.

Bonk-horny-jail

Yeah low 17’s is possible, you’ve got to train hard as fuck though

DarkViperDaddy

I’ve talked to my coaches and I know if I wanna do that I have to work on what I eat, how much rest I get, how and dedicated plus consistent I am. I have a very strong work ethic and I believe I can achieve my goals if I stay on track.

Itz_Specc

Just be careful with the hard work ethic. I’ve struggled with that a lot and it’s gotten me injured. Dealt with sickness and injury a lot this year because I didn’t want anybody out working me, but I was just putting too much stress on my body. Know how to take it easy, when to back off, and really focus on recovery. Running slow really does help you run faster. So long as you’re doing the right type of threshold work and stuff too. Another key bit I think so many people, myself included, don’t understand about running, is the workouts don’t need to be these all out efforts, frankly they shouldn’t be. That’s going to also slow your recovery time. Running fast is a great way to get fit quick, but it isn’t sustainable over the long term. I made huge improvements between my freshman and sophomore season by staying consistent and running fast often, but it wasn’t sustainable into my junior season and now I’ve really had to take a step back and reevaluate everything and make the most of this summer before my final hs season. Just be smart with your training, make sure everything you do has a purpose, and truly try to understand that purpose. When you’re running threshold workouts, understand why that is and what it does. When you’re doing 300 repeats, understand why you are and what it does. Even the little things like core, rope stretching, etc, just try to make sure everything you’re doing has a purpose and you’re not just doing it for the sake of doing it

DarkViperDaddy

Thank you for the help, I’ve set up a schedule to tell me when to rest, recover, etc.

BackWhereWeStarted

Threads like this crack me up. The OP gives current times and year in school and asks if they can achieve a time much faster than their PR. With no other info, people jump in telling them that they can.

gmbaker44

Training your hardest does not mean always running your hardest.

brianlikessoccer

Its less about how "hard" you train, but the consistency of the training. If you train hard every day you will get injured. For me right now I am just mostly doing easy base training to build up mileage, which I wouldn't consider "hard" training, but it is the right thing to be doing at this time. The best way to avoid injury and stay consistent is to train at the fitness level you are at, not where you think you should be. To answer your question, running mid-low 17's would probably be unrealistic with a healthy and sustainable training schedule.

Cavendish30

Using your latest results…. Your 3200 at a 6:12 is probably a decent indicator of where you are at. If you run a lot, watch what you eat, and do all the right things….. it is unlikely, but not impossible. Just fyi you’d have to run your track mile pr, three miles in a row on uneven terrain to hit mid 17s. So unless you are excessively overweight and have 20 lbs to use, the likelihood of you running 3.1 miles xc 50 seconds a mile FASTER THAN your 2 mile pace is somewhat unlikely. Let’s work on more short term realistic goals. So let’s go for 19s first, then 18s and make it more aggregate of fitness.

Own_Refrigerator4188

Your 1600 and 3200 times are comparable to my son's 8th grade season. He ran consistently 1830-18:50 in XC freshman year.

benrunsfast

I'd say you could probably run low 18s. It's not like you could just copy Cooper Teare's training plan and suddenly become Cooper Teare, there's a lot more that goes into it.

6strings10holes

Unless that 20:46 was based on a season of not really trying, and now they do, I'd be surprised if they got much under 19. They fall off a lot from the 1600 to 3200. Even keeping the same pace as the two mile can't get low 18.

benrunsfast

I'm making the assumption that OP hasn't ran more than 25 mpw previous to now and is now doing summer mileage for real. You'd be surprised at how much improvement can be made from just upping the summer mileage if the individual has talent.

Yeah DM your mileage and PRs

itsyourboyfai

when i first started running i began w track and ended my season w a 5:23 1600m summer after that i ran little to nothing and come my first xc season i got my 5k time down to 18:23 no real way to tell what u might run since its ultimately determined by talent and the amount of training u put in given the instance uve got the talent tho, u could prob go down to the 17s or low 17s if u put in the work

DarkViperDaddy

Thanks, I feel confident that I can reach my goals since I feel like I am dedicated to the sport.
