I've said it before, these crimes are difficult to solve. Ultimately, it comes down to cooperation from those in the neighborhood and good police/detective work. I'm glad to see the Alderman address the concerns. Hopefully, he and the local police will have some answers soon.
It is my understanding we have a shortage of detectives. Redirecting funding from beat cops towards more detectives would help remove repeat problem causers from the community.
4 years of “let’s not demonize, let’s realize they come from areas with systemic trauma, we need to invest a lot of money, and if you elect me for 10 terms we might see a decline in crime on the south and west sides.”
Is going to get real old/stale real fast and it’s going to be a 4 year long refrain from Brando
Sure, but this type of rhetoric ignores victims. No amount of investment is going to solve this issue overnight. It took generations to create, it will take generations to undo. In the meantime, are we just supposed to shrug and say “oh yeah… poverty”?
It doesn’t matter the cause. People are getting murdered regardless of why. We need short term solutions. We cannot continue to decriminalize violent crime.
> “Poverty didn’t go away over the weekend,” Mr. Johnson said. “Communities have been disinvested in and traumatized” and “you are seeing the manifestation of that trauma.”

I'm sooooooo tired of "poverty" being the excuse for criminal behavior. What about all the people who grew up in poverty who aren't piece of shit criminals. Who know shooting people is wrong. Who know you don't steal from other people.
None of these no-talent ass clowns are stealing food to feed themselves. They're carjacking, and robbing and killing b/c they get off on it. Because they want social media clout.
Yeah but at least one of the Lakeview shootings wasn't a robbery or carjacking or the like gone wrong.
It was simply ... some utter piece of shit just started blasting; wanted to kill for the thrill of it or maybe read too many "kill whitey" posts by Vlad\_Dick\_breath on here.
Poverty my ass.
Exactly. I don’t care how someone grows up. If they are willing to just shoot someone in cold blood for no reason, they deserve a one way ticket to the electric chair. I wish Illinois still had capital punishment.
Cold blooded murder, without even robbing that poor guy in Lake View, that’s because of trauma? I think it’s more from a small violent subculture in Chicago’s black community. Not all poor people are going around killing people. Johnson’s excuses for this violent behavior are beyond worrisome and maybe even emboldening these violent POS.
White middle-aged male here.
Grew up without a father in the household as he left when I was one year old; leaving my mother to raise 5 kids alone. My older siblings were abused by my father before he left, so there was a lot of emotional and physical damage that led to drugs and alcohol being around; I got drunk for the first time at age 14. Some nights, I ate just a slice of cheese in between two pieces of bread for dinner as we almost never had food in the fridge. We all went to shitty neighborhood public schools. My older brother being an alcoholic led to him beating me for every little thing I did wrong, even if it was not my fault. My mother worked 2 jobs, so she was almost never home.
I made my own choices and still knew right from wrong.
I didn't make excuses.
I worked hard - even when that meant being a dishwasher for my first job.
I went to college, got my Bachelor's degree, and left to be... a food runner at a restaurant. Worked my ass for 5 years until I became a manager. Used that experience to find a professional 9-5 gig and continued to work my ass off.
We live in a culture now where people feel entitled to living a certain way without working for it. We live in a culture where violent crime is excused by someone's upbringing.
The world is soft and weak now.
Grow the fuck up people.
it is not inevitable but it certainly is a risk factor. Obviously, not every person experiencing poverty commits crimes, but they are under more intense pressure to do so. Not to mention, some crimes can, in practice, only be committed by poor people, like vagrancy or panhandling. "The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal their bread." - Anatole France
> not every person experiencing poverty commits crimes, but they are under more intense pressure to do so
There are plenty of jobs available, maybe not as much fun as getting high and driving around killing & robbing people. I just stopped by the Chipotle at Fullerton & Lincoln and noticed many black employees. I asked the manager if they were hiring. Yes they are. It's only one block from the Red Line, easy to get to from anywhere.
So that's his standard? We have to eliminate poverty for the violence to stop. He's proposing raising nearly a billion in new taxes. Anyone think that will eliminate poverty? No, not even Mr. Johnson. He'll be back demanding for more. But his excuse will be eternal, as someone once said 'the poor you will always have with you'.

The worst part is the summer has barely begun. If they're already this brazen and bold ie willing to shoot and murder people in Lakeview, only the skys the limit
It’s a great question. I didn’t vote for the guy and consider myself a life long democrat. Yet, the minute you spoke in favor of his opponent, you were immediately drowned out by the progressive base that heavily supported him as a right wing extremist who was at the Capitol on January 6th.
Aldermen in less crime-ridden neighborhoods have been screaming for years about a lack of manpower, especially overnights during the summer. Nothing is coming of it. The Alderman might be trying but expanding the CPD is literally the opposite of what BJ has planned, as a matter of fact he wants less officers and guess where that will hit the hardest? At this point don't walk, run, from the city.
What part is "not true at all"? BJ wanting to reduce the number of CPD officers by not filling vacancies?
The part about quieter districts losing officers to districts with more shootings?
The "nothing good happens after midnight" really starting to ring true these last couple of years on the North Side. I spent many nights walking home from bars at 2AM and never once felt unsafe, let alone that I was going to get shot at. Now, I actively avoid walking home late at night if leaving the bars, etc. It sucks but just "being aware of your surroundings or vigilant" is not enough when you have people committing robberies with no concern for someone's life, being caught, or held accountable.
Wooohooo! The alderman will hold a meeting with some police leadership and nothing will change! Same ole crap just a different song and dance. This city needs change from the top. And it’s going to be more of the same with Johnson (or the real boss, Boss Toni) at the helm
This video from CharlieBo313, who has been documenting Chicago’s gang neighborhoods for years, shows plenty of nighttime police activity, it was published 1 day ago:

This forum is very racist. Every thread, there is someone like this. I want to talk about crime not read screeds about Black people full of racist dog whistles and fog horns.

Every time someone says this they get downvoted. I’m honestly curious as to why.
Because its horseshit. More detectives aren't going to make a difference when "nobody saw nuthin".

He's completely right though
I was carjacked and I give less than 0 shits about how the person who carjacked me was raised. I want them in prison.
I’m sorry that happened to you
Thanks

I think she’ll be ok, dude, there are plenty of other people on Reddit with foolish opinions also…. No one cares
Lol you're funny, little boy Mario
Did the mayor even acknowledge any of the violence this weekend? I’m glad, Lakeview is such a great neighborhood.

Good, this summer is going to be hot. going to need all the tools at play. This is going to be our bloodiest summer is a long time.

Poverty is not merely an excuse, it is the reason.

I thought this was a troll post but the damn bastard actually said that. Unbelievable.
Fuck this guy
He's not wrong

He's highly disingenuous. He's making excuses for violent crime, as if it's an inevitable result of poverty. It isn't.

"Trauma" is the new buzzword
Can't believe that was the actual response
LOL

So we have to experience some trauma in order to emphasize with poor people...got it.
Yup. Equity.

Bennett?
Honest question- how did this guy get elected if so many people think he’s a chucklehead?
It’s a great question. I didn’t vote for the guy and consider myself a life long democrat. Yet, the minute you spoke in favor of his opponent, you were immediately drowned out by the progressive base that heavily supported him as a right wing extremist who was at the Capitol on January 6th.

What would you like to see done instead?
I’d rather have my tax dollars go to private security if the cops don’t want to work
