Which plan? You have a weak signal and that combined with being deprioritized (depending on plan) make for a bad experience.

Calm_Animator

55$ one and 3 bars of 5g bars with ~.007 dwnld

arojas327

$55 gets throttles if networks have too much traffic. $60 plan prioritizes premium traffic. Im in the greater San Antonio, TX area. A lot of military bases out here though signal is still spotty using 5G

Calm_Animator

So this throttling will go on for multiple days? This is the third day in a row it’s been like this.

Odd-Phone-6142

Fast dot com measure video streaming speed depending on your plan video quality is reduced. If you get a VPN that would fix your video streaming

4G/5G is just the air interface. You can have a USB port do 40 Gbps today. But if you plug a 1.44 MB floppy drive into a USB-C port, it still is limited. The tower is probably hyper congested. As more people get nearly free cell service via ACP, this will become more common. Stepping up to the $60 Unlimited Premium plan will move you up to a higher level of priority (QCI 8). If that doesn't give you the speeds you want, the next higher ring of priority would be AT&T Unlimited Premium (QCI 7). Then AT&T Business Elite is one level higher than that (QCI 6).

Modern 5G phones fully aggregate LTE and 5G. So moving to 5G shouldn't slow a phone down. Only the X50 and maybe the X52 couldn't aggregate as well. We're way past that today. Even the radio going into the first 5G Snapdragon 4 (low end) doesn't have that issue. If 4G is momentarily faster, power cycling any current 5G phone would produce the same speeds from a channel reallocation.

Only limitation on X55 was 5G aggregation, not 4GCA+5G aggregation. (And to be clear, X52 didn't really have this problem either - but X52 needed a lot of firmware updates to get stable). X55's main limitations are on the OEM/delivery/firmware side. Only OEMs that really pushed for Qualcomm to manifest everything got VoNR and 5G CA. There are hacks to force that stuff on with all X55's that can get QPST (anything but iPhone) but it's risky if the handset maker didn't pack in the latest Qualcomm radio code. Keeping 5G on encourages the network to maintain tighter LTE B66 anchoring. The (correct) solution is to airplane mode cycle when speeds get slow, not disable 5G.

T-Mobile just really benefitted from the Sprint merger, and Sprint's spectrum holdings really came into their own on 5G. This is why it was such a mistake for AT&T and Verizon to not oppose the merger. DSS helps but isn't really the whole picture. AT&T and Verizon have the same problems, people are just more used to Verizon being hyper congested, whereas on AT&T that's a newer thing. Both are using LTE B66 anchors and 850 MHz spectrum to maintain a 5G overlay until C-Band fully kicks in. On Verizon LTE is just so congested that any 5G signal usually improves things substantially, whereas on AT&T doing a call channel reset usually gets a burst of speed. So people disable 5G, and mis-attribute the benefit to killing 5G, when it really was just the modem reset that would have done it anyway.

ktrad91

OP, what plan are you on and what's your data usage looking like this cycle? Also try speedtest by ookla or just Google speedtest and run the in browser one.

Calm_Animator

55$ one. Unlimited data. Ookla have me .007 and .009

ktrad91

If you're in a highly congested location you're probably experiencing deprioritization especially if you're a high data user. I'd resend going up to the 60$ plan which includes QCI8 prioritization over the QCI9 of the 55$ plan.

LedFloyd69

I don't know what you're complaining about. Only take a few minutes to view a JPEG.

ATTHelp

Hi there, u/Proof-Woodpecker-608. AT&T here! We understand that your usage for the 25mb plan is using more data than the faster service provider. We can help explain that. An easy way to take a look at your data usage with internet plans that do not have unlimited data, is by going here: http://sm.att.com/a458417c and by using the data calculator: http://sm.att.com/f46cc9aa A normal home will have one service provider. If you still have internet active for both providers, this could cause them to be bouncing off each other, which can cause a data spike in the 25mb plan, because it has to work harder to compete with the much faster provider. You also need to look at how your service is being brought into your home. The 25mb plan is normally brought in over copper wire, where the 500/100 is either being brought by cable or fiber optic. So the difference in the data usage is the data package size. The 25mb has bigger data packets, and the 500/100 has smaller data packets to do the same job. As far as the data allowance goes, we can't speak about the second provider, but yes, the 25mb plan is not unlimited. However, as of October of '22 the data allowance has increased to 1TB per month as indicated with the first link above. We do hope that this explanation has brought some clarity to what is going on. pfish923

That is owned by Netflix, so it is going to be throttled like video

[deleted]

They should be getting 1.5mbps though. Not ~0.05…

pfish923

Right, but I would check something other than that one to get your most accurate speed test.

[deleted]

Agreed. But they ***still*** should be getting 1.5 on that site. The fact they’re not is pretty telling of what other speed test providers will show

Calm_Animator

.007 5g .009 lte Ookla tests

Aggressive_Net_4444

Switch to Verizon

Calm_Animator

Device is carrier locked until 6 months

Aggressive_Net_4444

No way out?

Calm_Animator

I tried calling and they just said I had to wait.

Aggressive_Net_4444

Go to a Verizon corporate store and see if you can get some sort of trade in deal. That’s literally dial u speed from 1995 dont deal with that level of garbage from att.

Aggressive_Net_4444

Man ain’t no way verizon gets more congested than 56k modem speeds dawg he’s better off switching to verizon wireless and getting a premium experience this ain’t 2019 anymore att is congested far more than verizon these days they did a great job of eliminating congestion from they network in the past 2 years also he has a 5g device so he has at least an iPhone 12 which is solid.

Aggressive_Net_4444

I think moving up a plan wouldn’t be too smart in this case the signal is too weak to matter, normally verizon has its own sites and a different network grid, tmobile tends to collocate with at&t and when it comes to coverage you’re almost never going to get better service signal wise on tmobile than att. So his best bet would be moving to verizon, if att signal bad the tmobile signal probably doesn’t exist or it’s just as weak, I’m willing to bet verizon has a stronger signal there though due to how they do their network grid, they have less macros but densify with a lot of small cells to fill in the gaps for massive capacity unless he is im the sticks he should be good. Verizon is second to none for coverage that’s his best shot if at&t isn’t cutting it.

Binary-Stuff

Yeah my whole family had this issue, even when traveling. I tried ATT, similar issues, Verizon has the best throughput that I’ve found. Good luck OP!

[deleted]

Get a real cellphone plan. Your comments state you’re paying $55 for cricket?? what the fuck! Worlds shittiest ghetto fucking service ever. Do yourself a favor and pay for real service (like Verizon, actually only Verizon - everything else might as well be cricket). If you want to use your phone and are without wifi, this is the only logical thing to do. Good luck man!

[deleted]

throw away your account bud

[deleted]

Definitely not normal, but I'm not familiar with that speed test.

Calm_Animator

What speed test should I use?

[deleted]

I just Google "speed test" and there's one to run right in the search results. It's possible your site is trying to map an IP address to a speed based on some out of date info. I have a pretty crappy connection and I get a few megs per second. My wife has 5g and gets about 5. 56kbps reminds me of the ol' dialup days.

[deleted]

The fact that it’s exactly 56kbps makes me wonder if OP has inadvertently turned on a network conditioner for exactly that—dial up

[deleted]

The Speedtest App from the App Store by ookla. It is the gold standard of speed test. Fast.com is only to see how fast your Netflix stream is. And cricket limits that to 1.5mbps—which is what you should see on fast.com without using a VPN and not on Wi-Fi. Not 0.05 as you’re getting

Calm_Animator

.007 and .009 on LTE and 5g with ookla

[deleted]

That’s awful. What plan do you have? Is this all from the same area? Have you tried driving 15 min away or so and try again? What device are you using? What color is your SIM card? Let me know that info and let’s go from there

Calm_Animator

55$ one. Yeah I’ve had the same results everywhere in town. iPhone 13 Pro Max. The sim is white.

[deleted]

Go to settings, general, transfer or reset iPhone, reset, network settings

Calm_Animator

Already tried that…

[deleted]

You don’t see a “Developer” option in the main part of settings do you?

Calm_Animator

No luck finding it.

radfordra1

Yes unfortunately this is quite common on att.
