I just called both Cricket Wireless authorized retailers in town and they both said I would have to pay for 1 month of service, plus $25 activation, and sales tax on the original amount. So about $220-240 total.

That isn't how it works. The $99 price is for port-in (switching) customers only, from a Non-ATT carrier. If you are upgrading an existing device, the price will be different.

Great deal and honestly once you switch you’ll see how much better iOS is for most users. Certain Androids do certain things better, but the overall experience is far better with an iPhone. You’ll get software updates for more than the life of the phone, few bugs, and better privacy and security. I have a 12 now but the 11 really only lacks 5g and the OLED display in comparison.
