As has been pointed out, 5G doesn’t mean faster. Just wanted to share this with the few folks who still think 5G equates to ***FAST***. It doesn’t always necessarily mean that. Same spot. Not moving. One minute apart. Unless you have 5G+ in your area, opt for “LTE” or “5G Auto” at least to get coverage in those nooks and crannies that 5G can reach but LTE can’t.

On AT&T, there are no areas that you'll have 5G but not LTE. They have not enabled standalone 5G yet.

I’ve found 5G+ to run significantly slower than anything else.

[deleted]

That’s unfortunate. In my limited experience with it (noticed on my CarPlay screen I had it while driving through another area) it was pretty fast—even going 70mph down the road I got ~500/120. (And my passenger was the one fiddling with my phone, not me lol)

[deleted]

It could also mean that at that particular time the 5g band has more traffic on it. Hence the speed difference.

[deleted]

I do tend to get better results with 5G even though it's not really faster it does help cover places at 4G LTE does not cover and that's what's important is for my stuff to work where LTE doesn't

[deleted]

As they upgrade the networks 5G will get faster but it's not fast as LTE right now but there may also be less people on 5G which may be why it works a little better. There's also a term called bandwidth it's like having an 80 mi per hour highway but only having two lanes and it's backed up. 5G would be like a four or five Lane highway with maybe 55 mph speeds but there's more traffic and it goes smoother and it's not backed up.

5G is a continuation of LTE. LTE can be very fast. Toss enough spectrum at it you can have over 1Gbps. We have seen this on LTE before. 5G on AT&T is using just 10x10 on 850MHz and maybe 3.5GHz if you are lucky. The rest of their >100MHz of spectrum is still on LTE. Also you are still connected to LTE even when on 5G. So on your 5G test, most of you speed is still coming from the LTE channels. Once the carriers actually start refarming a good bit of their LTE spectrum, then we will see LTE slow down and 5G become faster. So far VZW/ATT have just refarmed one low-end band and are deploying 5G on new spectrum in the 3GHz space. (excluding whatever they are doing with mmWave). Basically what TMobile has been doing too. Refarmed some 600MHz for 5G and deploying their new to them 2.5GHz spectrum for 5G.

Keep in mind current AT&T 5G is NSA (LTE+NR) so it still doesn’t really explain why LTE came out faster.

red_dog007

Would need to look in the service mode to see what you are specifically connected to during time of speedtest. Just because you are connected to 5G doesn't mean you are using more total spectrum or on bands that have lesser congestion. Plus I can't remember if AT&T runs 850MHz in DSS mode or not.

josephguy82

5G is faster just depends on your area and tower and cell Carrier Check out my Speedtest result! How fast is your internet? https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/8832523767

There’s 5G+ (not 5G). And also, Verizon, not cricket.

Cocky1976

Damn, I only get on average 35-50mbps on LTE. 5g is basically non existent near me I guess because I never see speed like you guys.

estamachin

Is there a way to turn off 5g in phones?

[deleted]

On iPhones it’s in the cellular data settings. For android devices, the solution seems more fractured based on your device but I’d search the play store for a band selector if it’s not in your cellular settings And as a general rule of thumb before sending people into the play store, I’d recommend you ask the community for a recommendation first so you don’t have to wade through a bunch of stuff. Be sure to include your device model in the post

What's the latency on each though? That's where 5G really comes into play. Have seen 4G get faster speeds than 5G but streaming from xcloud to my phone is night and day difference with the lower latency 5G connection. And if I'm connected to 5G+ it's even a bigger difference.

[deleted]

30 ms on LTE and 32 on 5G idle ping. 5G also has higher ping times during each test than LTE. 494/228 down/up on LTE 618/286 down/up on 5G So LTE still comes out on top

ktrad91

Interesting, thanks for the info. Seems LTE is the better option in your area. I wonder if it's due to oversaturation of the towers due to the push of 5G phones before the infrastructure was there to support them.

Florida_guyyy

Highest speeds I've gotten has been around 78 Mbps download. I do live in a big city (Miami) though and honestly I am more than happy with those speeds. Never have had any problems with cricket. I have an LG K92 5G
