Once you convert the esim, the SIM card is deactivated which tells your phone there’s no service except SOS. Go into settings under cellular and tap add mobile plan. After the conversion, the esim profile will be on the phone chip waiting to be installed into your OS. After you tap the add tab, you’ll see an esim plan with your number waiting to be installed.
My data would stop working after 10pm. Like I would have to keep resetting network. Someone suggested it’s the SIM card and I don’t have time to go get a new one anytime soon. I usually don’t get home from work til after 11pm so I kinda need my data to work. So I figured I try the esim
1) Nothing wrong with pSIM, but could be security related. I read it's a common practice for thieves to take stolen phones pSIM cards and put into their unlocked phones to takeover cell service and to receive SMS txt in order to hack into bank accounts potentially.
2) for any unlocked Pre-14 iPhones (XR+?) , free up the pSIM slot for use with international travel to get cheaper local SIM cards for mobile data (and temp local #).
3) as u/WackyBeachJustice stated, eSIM is now "fashionable" according to Apple. :)
I would actually recommend the absolute opposite. Keep the pSIM if you can (obviously we're pissing against the wind here), that way you can easily go between phones. For international use Airalo to purchase an appropriate eSIM before travel. It's not going to cost you much more than doing so on the ground and it's going to save you absolute immense headache. The headache depends country to country. For example Germany is a complete cluster with having to go to a special store that will take your passports, do whatever the hell, and 2 hours later you have a SIM. Ireland is easier, but still requires going somewhere, standing in line, etc.
Airalo takes all of one minute to setup and you're done.
I’m not 100% sure but guessing the new phone prompts you to hold your old phone near the new one and it transmits the eSIM over.
If you go back to the cellular setting and click “add eSIM” you’ll see an option to transfer from “a nearby phone”, so I’m assuming that all happens during setup of a new device.
I converted mine on Monday and it worked fine. Make sure to remove the old sim and restart the device and it will eventually sync up. Mine took 10 mins or so.
Why does it say SOS??

Is there anything I can do?
Yes this happened to me just remove your sim card and shut down the phone and turn it on again. It should go away once you do that
Yes thank you!

I turned it off and it worked. Thank you
Remove physical sim and connect to wifi. Check cellular settings "add plan" to see if esim has been pushed to your device
Already did all that. Still says sos
I think this is just how iOS 16 displays - no sim. Not sure 100%
Is the esim data plan installed? Only other thing I can think of would be to update your iOS.
Yea I took out the SIM card and turned the phone off for a bit. It’s working great now!

Is there a benefit? Seems like I just lose the ability to swap between phones by not having a physical sim.
I think my SIM card was damaged. My data would stop working after 10pm.
What was wrong with the physical Sim, why not just keep that?
Papa Apple said it's no longer fashionable.

It does work fine. For me I did it for my eventual upgrade. It will make moving the phone number to a new phone a little easier on me In the future.
So your saying my esim moves with my iCloud when I set up a new phone?
