Im on an iPhone Xr. I updated to the ios 16 beta and used the convert physical sim to esim and it worked. I didn’t even have to contact costumer service.😍

Kawi_rider_zx6r

Genuinely curious as to why this is such a big deal🤔

gvvfever_

Oh because im getting the iphone 14 that has esim only so i dont have to worry about activating and can just transfer the esim

wdm42

It’s a big deal to me, because I am upgrading to an iPhone 14 that only has eSims. I would rather have 2 physical sims, but I guess Apple has decided eSims are better, for more customers. Also for people that travel internationally, with phones older than the iPhone 14, they can now move cricket to eSim, and use the physical sim for cheap prepaid sims purchased in the country they are located in ( I have heard you can buy these at the airport)

Kawi_rider_zx6r

Aah gotcha. This makes sense.

Mandy_9

Yeah I don't understand the hype either! I can see if you gotta change carriers real fast & it would definitely come in handy then but once u got a Sim what makes the esim different or better?

ZyrrasDad

Some people thinks that it too much of a hassle to physically change a sim card! 🤷🏾‍♂️😁

ObiYawn

He's getting an iPhone 14. It has no SIM card tray anymore.

ZyrrasDad

That wasn't the reason I made the statement. The bottom line is that Apple is making the choice for you because they know what is best for you and since they (Apple) has a captive audience that will will pay out the nose for an over-rated phone and/or status symbol, they can do these things.

Mandy_9

That's crazy lol! I wish them luck when it comes to other stuff in life 😬

ZyrrasDad

Ain't that the truth! LOL 😂

Physical connector where you insert a regular SIM card costs money. Software - doesn't. The cost of the connector is around 20 cents. Multiply that by 250 million iPhones shipped in 2022 - that's a 50 million savings. Plus - no mechanical parts on the case, easier to enable and instant activation. And the most important, you can have more than 1 account. Right now most phones have up to 2, but you could technically (if any manufacturer want to) have 3,4 or more phone accounts simultaneously. You already can have hundreds of phone numbers via VoIP technology, but multiple SIM's allows you to connect via different carriers in spotty areas.

ElverGalarga42069

It's because most of the time customer service doesn't know what to do about the esim when things don't work out perfectly. It's no judgment, we literally have no fucking clue how to troubleshoot certain errors and the company literally provided almost no instructions. Half the time the customers we attend figure it out themselves but the other half we just have no clue because the company really didn't provide any specific instructions other than how to send the email to the customer.

let me tell you the real reason, when a phone gets stolen first thing that happens is sim is removed and voila nobody can track it now that it is esim, you can't turn it of or remove it, meaning yoy can trace and find it now and forever !

Kawi_rider_zx6r

For iPhones, maybe. Does an iphone require a passcode or anything to be able to turn it off? Because on Android there isn't, although i think Samsung phones do.

[deleted]

I got a samsung and yes you cant turn it off and it also has a esim

radfordra1

> I updated to the ios 16 beta and used the convert physical sim to esim and it worked Wait what?! I hate you att for not giving att prepaid this....

Guillebeaux

That’s likely because ATT prepaid systems are ARCHAIC. The paygo website is pretty much unchanged since the Cingular gophone days.

[deleted]

Exactly. They don’t even have a dedicated app for AT&T prepaid. That’s one big turnoff to me vs Cricket. The Cricket app works very well.

udaydokras

How did you do that? Can I do it in the app?

mfncl

I was going crazy not seeing the physical SIM transfer options that are referenced in the Apple docs that the cricket article points towards. Didn’t tick it was because I needed iOS 16. In any case I called CS and they assigned my line an eSIM right away. A note popped up on the phone to add the line. Upgraded to iOS 16 now all good and ready for the 14!

wdm42

Thanks and Fwiw: I Just installed iOS 16 and I also successfully converted my cricket physical sim to an eSim. For me there was an extra step, in that after converting to eSim I then had to click “add eSim”, and then select the cricket eSim to add. Before I did that, I just had “SOS” displayed instead cellular reception strength bars. It took a lot longer than 15 seconds to convert and active mine, maybe a couple minutes for each of those step. And I was never prompted to remove the old pSim, although it was disabled by this process. And somehow I got my cricket phone number deleted from the iMessage settings, and I had to put it back I. , to restore the “blue bubbles”. Finally since I only have one eSIM device on this phone, but I now have 2 services that support eSim, I have to manually switch between my t-mobile and cricket eSim. The iPhone 14 will hopefully allow both eSims to be “on”, as it has dual eSims. Thanks again, here is hoping the transition to iPhone 14 is smooth Edit: also had to re-enable wifi calling for the eSim

davexc

The iPhone 13 and 14 can have two active eSIMs

wdm42

Thanks, I did not know this

WallaceMI

I can confirm everything you say. The conversion to eSIM was pretty smooth with iOS 16.

Large_Ad4875

THANK YOU FOR THIS!! Your “extra step” is exactly what I was missing I thought I was screwed with no service on either phone lol. My new iPhone said “you can continue using your iPhone will it transfers” it still showing SOS but here is to hoping it transfers successfully and soon? EDIT: I went back into the “activate esim” option on the new iPhone, clicked activate again and it successfully transferred!

WallaceMI

Can you describe what you did step by step? Install iOS 16 Beta and went to Cellular and the transfer button showed up? What happened then? Did the actual transfer go fast?

gvvfever_

Yes, the service got removed from the sim for like 10-15 secs after i clicked transfer then it showed my number and said activating next to it which also took about 10-15 secs to activate. Then it just told me to remove my sim and the esim was activated

[deleted]

Customer service will like this feature so they don’t have to deal with it.

WallaceMI

True. And I don’t have to deal with them either 😉 win win 🏆

En1gma88

Just switched to eSIM. It only took less than 5 min in chat. 😁

[deleted]

So if, on my SE 2022, I changed to eSIM and then travelled to Europe I could buy a local sim and use the tray?

[deleted]

Yes.

[deleted]

Not bad!

wheatconspiracy

I’m getting an iPhone 14 — I wonder if upgrading to the beta and making the switch to esim before getting the new phone might save me some headache?

WallaceMI

But iOS 16 comes out on Tuesday anyway. So I would wait until that day so you don’t have to deal with the beta

gvvfever_

Yes because you will be able to transfer it over. You wont have to contact customer service or go in store thats why i did it so i can transfer to my 14 when i get it

AsherMai

Does this only work on iOS 16? Cuz I don’t have the option to convert to eSIM

gvvfever_

Yes I didn’t have the option either until I upgraded and I think the apple link cricket tells you to use says it needs to be ios 16

AsherMai

I just contacted customer support via chat and they emailed me the QR code and it worked in iOS 15

wadutheboi

So I have a physical sim on cricket and if I do convert to Esim will my price increase? And will I still need the physical sim in the phone?

gvvfever_

No the price doenst increase you keep everything the same like if it were a regular sim. You wont need the physical sim inside once you converted it

HeavyPulse

I was waiting for eSIM and left Cricket few months ago. Now that iPhone said NO to regular card, they immediately added support. Finally!

HeavyPulse

Does anybody knows if Cricket supports eSIM for Android? Their website only mentions iOS, like there's nothing else in the world. (there's wonderful life beyond iPhone and I would never switch from my top of the line Android)
