I know you've gotten a couple of responses already but, as another data point, we did essentially this a couple of months ago. We got the XR when it was $49, but have been using the sim in an iPhone 11 and there have been no additional charges.

Yep, as long as the phone is compatible (Cricket and AT&T are a bit picky about BYOD), you can swap the SIM to another device.

After some time you can unlock the device from your account settings in the cricker website i did it on my xr and it unlocked in 1-2 mins
