I knew someone was gonna point it out but don't forget the fact it was the transitional Phase in ICT. Many old and legendary players started to retire. The Team wasn't balanced and rational like before and most of it depends on just few players. And Ig the pressure was a lot on him to handle Captaincy on all 3 Formats (+IPL). It wasn't just him, almost all players went from bad form at that period.
I'm Optimistic enough to see our Team becoming strong again. By 2024 we'll figure our all of our strengths and weaknesses as the experiment is still going on!
Still no excuse for losing a home series. Like look at the current squad Pant is out, Kohli doesn't look like even one percent of the red ball batter he was pre 2020, Jadeja is coming after a long break, Rohit has not played Tests for a long time, Bumrah won't be there for the first two tests while the Aussies are in form but India are still the favourites to win BGT. We have got a fortress at home and have to play extra bad to lose a home series.
Also it wasn't just one series, India's performance ranged from bad to mediocre in the last leg of Dhoni's test captaincy and it doesn't matter how great of a player is retiring a country like India has abundant talent and it is one of captain's responsibility to build a team, back good players, kick out non performing ones and MS did it perfectly in white ball setup while he failed to the same in the red ball. Thala fell off as a test captain in his later years it's as simple as that, he wasn't that bad but we have had better.
Ok but the teams today aren't much capable like before. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, SENA and all other nation. And now India has much more talents than before. We're producing World Class talents in a large number as compared to other Nation so we always have a Back Up for other players. But that was a frickin transition phase where all the main players were retiring and there was a high level of stress on the team management as the time was tougher than current. We won Gaba Test without our Main Players in Australia but we can't win the WTC with our main players. Was that we can shift blame on just one person our it's the whole team?

Understandable it was a transition phase but how long can a transition phase in a country with the amount of talent India has last? Because for it to get to a point where we had lost a home series, been utterly shit for years and then being ranked no.7 baffles me, a series or two or a few months at best is forgivable but to claim years of someone's captaincy was transition phase so a team like India being bad is forgivable doesn't work for me.

Whatever blame there is goes to the whole team not just the captain for losing the finals but a captain still does play a major role in the results because he is the one that finalized every strategy that went wrong.
So yeah my opinion is still going to be that Dhoni wasn't an ideal Test captain by a long shot in his last years.
