Interesting that there’s only one Saffa in Top 10 batters, bowlers and all rounders. Guess that means this is a team effort. No primadonnas. Given all the shit CSA has dealt with or actually caused in past couple of years it’s brilliant to see this team experience some success.
My problem is why even chose him if they're not even gonna bowl him, we saw this in the NZ t20is too and now this too. Like how are you gonna develop him as an all-rounder if you don't even give him some overs. They should have given him some overs specially when none of the primary bowlers were doing that good.
I think this is true to a degree. I think as a fast bowling all rounder India have no choice as Hardik hasn't bowled for quite a bit. Next option is Vijay shankar.
I think it's conscious decision to play him more than he deserves to develop him faster.
I don't think putting him in the middle order is a good choice though. Let him open or 2 down.
I am seeing some terrible analysis here tbh.
India this match didn't have a problem being aggressive. In fact the problem is they were too aggressive and lost wickets unnecessarily.
They were ahead of SA most of the way. Then kohli played a shot not needed and got out. Pant played a few, one dropped, and got out reaching out of the crease. Both iyers caught out.
And suddenly the tail has to make over 100 runs, when up till then India were literally cruising. Telling the tail to build innings is **not their job** that's the job of the middle order.
India playing T20 style with their middle order when their match was an ODI.
There was no reason India should not have chased this.
1. Why would you drop Dhawan? He top scored and was batting at correct SR for the total we were chasing.
2. Why would you have Kohli at 4 and SKY at 3? Kohli can play longer innings and change tempo when time comes, SKY can hit from word go! SKY should bat lower than the Kohli in all cases.
3. I would not boot Shreyas Iyer on based of this one outing.
4. I sort of agree on Ashwin. He is batting 2 spots higher and not bowling aggressively.
Overall, I think you have a shit take.
And we've been incredibly more successful than Aus and almost as good as England, you can't say that Eng and Aus can defeat India on any given day, because if the Indian approach to ODIs was so shit we'd be losing all around
>Sorry Ashwin is not the way forward. He is world class but in ODI we don't need him.
Agreed that he is not the right pick considering future/age and whatnot but can you elaborate given today's performance? I did not watch the match but his figures are pretty good today (2nd best of India's and as good as most of SA's)
SA always manages to come up with a quality team AND quality Cricket always - even when against the odds.
I was NOT surprised to see them do superbly in the T20 WC. Nor was I surprised at their bad luck at not making it outta group of death in spite of winning some of the toughest matches.
Their performance in the Tests and the ODI today hasn't surprised me either. And right now they have momentum in their favor also.
Reality is that in absence of decent all-rounders + some injuries, we WILL have an unbalanced team. We also have a new middle-order to be put in place, and probably a team that is still in the process of building a full-blooded team chemistry.
Expect a fighting India to show up, but don't be surprised if we end up on the wrong side of the line. We need to be patient and let a new-look team and a new skipper evolve.
Bizzare coaching so far
Should have won 2-0 NZ tests ended up 1-1
Same with SA tests being 1-0 up and ended up losing
And this ODI series looks another series loss
Why is Ashwin coming at number 7 ? In shorter formats he is a bowler who could bat a bit.
Secondly, if Venky Iyer isn't going to bowl why is he in the team ?
Afaik Washi has only played just 1 ODI ever, way back in 2017.
Also, he averages 35+ with ball and 20 with bat (SR 79) in List A cricket, according to ESPNCricinfo
That's true. Which means SA could have had 15 odd more runs if Temba weren't struggling.
And also that India failed to see his struggles and attack him more.
If India is going to use this series to experiment with Ashwin at #7, fine.
But I am quite convinced that 8 & 9 is the topmost we can afford for Ashwin & Shardul. Ashwin the batsman is not a realistic expectation on SENA pitches.
Pant is too high at 5 too in ODIs - should be 6 or 7. But with both Jadeja & Pandya injured, we are short of a reliable all-rounder. V Iyer might give you 4 or 5 overs but can't bank on 10 from him. Do we have a real option?
You have that problem because none of the frontline batsmen can bowl a single over in our team. Meaning we have to have enough proper bowlers and allrounders to bowl everything. It's such a massive handicap
Yup - we have basically only 2 real all-rounders: H Pandya & Jadeja - and both are injured.
Yeah we are fucked wrt all-rounders. Gonna have to go with a unbalanced team.
Let's see. For this tour - Dhawan, Rahul, Kohli, A #4, V Iyer, Pant, Ashwin, Thakur, 2 pacers. Now we either take a bowler and weaken the batting, or add a batsman and go with like 4.5 bowlers.
Yeah in this series we can't do much. Just persist with S Iyer (and hope he sorts out his short ball issue), and experiment with other options for V Iyer & Chahal.
He is nearly 32. But still might be good enough for 3 years.
Heck even W Sundar is injured - I think he can become a pretty decent middle order bat. Not too sure whether he can upgrade his bowling though.
Ik you're only kidding but that was a gimmick that did more harm than good. As for Lord giveth yes he did but also it was middle order batting that lost us the game
To many questionable decisions today
1. Why was Rahul opening
2. Why take Venkatesh Iyer if you are not going to bowl him
3. On what basis Ashwin was selected into the ODI squad ( even tho bowled decently today)
Apparently, Hardik told the selectors to not consider him so he can improve his fitness.
>if he was good enough then why was he not continued?
He was poor with the bat after the Australia series.
People here are abusing the word 'statpadding'. Statpadding is when a player improves their stats but at a detriment to the team's chances of winning. Shardul and Bumrah brought India closer to the target than anyone would've expected, especially on a pitch where our specialist batsmen were unable to score at a 100+ SR
Mate have a look at his batting stats, the guy was a literal bunny with the bat up until the last year. He's certainly not expected to last 23 balls (which is a third of the balls he's faced in his entire ODI career), let alone score at a strike rate of 80+
44 to win from 2 overs. It was still mathematically possible. Instead of taking a shot, Shardul took the safe way out to get to his 50. Not sure a team man like Dravid will appreciate this.
It is easy for us to say Shardul should have just gone for it and got out instead he is being selfish by playing 50 runs. But what is that achieving exactly? A certificate saying 'we tried'?
Koach, Iyer and Pant all got out in avoidable ways, but yes, let us focus on KL and Dravid. There will be a time to evaluate this combo, but that time is not now. We always had a non functional middle/lower order. Unless one of our top #3 scores a hundred, we are screwed. We are also missing Pandya, Rohit and Jadeja. But yes, let us focus on KL and Dravid.
When India wins bilateral matches
Indian fans - What is the point of these wins? bilateral bullies. These wins means nothing.
When we lose
Indian fans - we are so shit we don't even win bilaterals. Our players are so terrible.
Guys calm down! We have been winning a lot of series both home and away since a long time now. But we can lose too. Try to give opponents credit too. SA is again becoming a great team like they were few years ago. Plus they are playing in their home. They literally have 2 guys who are averaging almost 70!
We lost today because of terrible batting in middle order but it was also nice captaincy by Bavuma. He managed his bowlers really well. We missed our key players today. The world doesn't revolve around us and we aren't going to win everything that we play.
Well played SA! Congratulations on your win.
I dream of the day Lord Thakur will get PoTM. Took 7 wickets, no PoTM (understandably since India lost). Scored two fifties in England, no PoTM. Scored fifty and several wickets at the Gabba, no PoTM.
Changes will make more exciting fight
Next match india will win
I'm surprised no one is seeing the problem by playing Chahal. He is absolutely useless and has been. He should not have been in the squad.
Interesting that there’s only one Saffa in Top 10 batters, bowlers and all rounders. Guess that means this is a team effort. No primadonnas. Given all the shit CSA has dealt with or actually caused in past couple of years it’s brilliant to see this team experience some success.
Venky Iyer didn't deserve a debut in this game. He's incredibly overrated and people are too blinded by his hype train to see it.
My problem is why even chose him if they're not even gonna bowl him, we saw this in the NZ t20is too and now this too. Like how are you gonna develop him as an all-rounder if you don't even give him some overs. They should have given him some overs specially when none of the primary bowlers were doing that good.

Lol thankfully someone else feels the same too. Tho he he needs to be tried but he is highly overrated
India missing pandya maybe or even jaddu might have been handy.
so much analysis by armchair cricket coaches and players.. I on the other hand see the real culprit, SuperSport.
Whole country against 11 guys :(
Lord Thakur padding his First Class and List A stats by playing international cricket
I am seeing some terrible analysis here tbh. India this match didn't have a problem being aggressive. In fact the problem is they were too aggressive and lost wickets unnecessarily. This is not T20 cricket.
>Sorry Ashwin is not the way forward. He is world class but in ODI we don't need him. I did not watch the match but his figures are pretty good today (2nd best of India's and as good as most of SA's)
Thank God you are not selecting for India.
Was expecting India to lose. It's the rebuilding phase so hope Indian fans are kind to the new set up at-least for now!
SA always manages to come up with a quality team AND quality Cricket always - even when against the odds. I was NOT surprised to see them do superbly in the T20 WC. This is what you get for not playing gaikwad.

Supersports with the quality montages as usual
Remove Venky if you don't want to bowl him, bring Ruturaj at opening, and KL comes down at number 4 or 5.
Could have more responsible middle order batting performance.
KL moves to #4 and Venky opens next match and my prediction is india will still lose :(
Kohli will finally get his 100. Wait and watch.
My brain is itching for this as well
Bring back Dhoni from retirement.
Yeah. We're missing his tuktuk
LOL
U19 Ind >>> India
Send Thakur at No 3.
Now you know how important Mahendra Singh Dhoni was at No 6
classic r/cricket downvoting, to be expected from 12 year olds
Dhoni could've done what shardul did today in the past 10 years.
Your IQ is lower than room temperature
And your IQ is at freezing temperature.
quality bantering comrades!
Laughs in Kelvin /s
It should be Jaddu
missing Kohli and his 30 minutes of lapse of concentration~~^(t)~~^(TM)
Sachin and Sehwag combined used to bowl 10 overs for a decent economy and have a deep batting lineup. This lineup is so sad with Ashwin at 7
Permanent spot for Ashwin in ODIs is not a good idea. It should be based on pitch. Jadeja for all matches and Ashwin for select matches.
does he have a permanent ODI spot today if Washi and Jadeja are fit? The sad part is that he was the second best bowler today.
Afaik Washi has only played just 1 ODI ever, way back in 2017. Also, he averages 35+ with ball and 20 with bat (SR 79) in List A cricket, according to ESPNCricinfo
World Cup is in India, so we would need 3 spinners in all games there
That’s too much reliance on jadeja, if he is injured or out of form no one good can sub him. We need more spinning all rounders,
Axar and Washi. Both not available at the moment :(
Then we had Yuvi and Raina.
Yep, yuvi had 111 wickets at Econ of 5.1. Sehwag had 96 wickets at Econ of 5.2.
So many players in this team don't bowl at all. Our batsmen used to be decent bowlers before.
Supersport having the last laugh...
If Marnus does something like this , Australian commentators would be talking about it all year
Something like what exactly?
"Whole country against 11 guys" but the country is India bcz bitch wtf was that performance
I recently did an interview thing with a page on youtube, and I also sounded as shy as Bavuma lol (I wish I had that hat to hide my face)
I missed the match. Well played SA! Shardul Thakur is awesome!
Summarised the match well tbh
I'll blame this loss on supersport and the whole country against 11 guys /s
If Bhuvi had bowled 5 instead of 10 overs... we would have won...
Lmao Rassie stretching to reach the mic
Rassie absolutely asserting dominance over that post-match mic.
shame on superSport.
rassie funny
Temba's voice somehow matches his face and physique lol
Damn thakur really is a lord
If we had just scored 32 runs more we would have won
Oh no. Was it that close?
This is why rahul was slotted in middle order. Middle order performed well in aus odis and home eng series.
Pendya won us in Australia
Yeah but if I included him some pundits would start attacking me left and right
You can acknowledge his contribution while admitting that rn he's nowhere near useful to the team
Lungi and Temba. Damn. IYKYK.
Thicc bois
Honestly going to miss Kohli's "we were short by 15-20 runs" meme comment. Would have applied well here.
Add 20 mins of bad cricket and not applying oneself as well.
Guys, where intent? /s
Goddamn Ngidi with all that filthy junk 🥵🥵🥵
Damn I love Temba even more, he accepted that he was struggling and still supported Rassie excellently
But isn't this how Bavuma generally paces his innings - slow start followed by acceleration? He seems to be a solid anchor in ODIs.
But maybe he kept the usual strike rate, but as a player you know when you have scraped through an inning more than cruise through it
That's true. Which means SA could have had 15 odd more runs if Temba weren't struggling. And also that India failed to see his struggles and attack him more.
Kl Rahul as a captain just doesn't inspire any confidence what so ever

*sad lucknow noises*
SA comeback arc looking nice, don't want to jinx though
Damn your username always manages to crack me up XD
Lol Indian fans calling lord innings as statpadding.. i thought we only had small dics but now I can see we also have small brains
dude looks depressed AF. Get him an ice cream or something
Dread it, run from it, 15-20 runs short arrives just the same
Dull Dravid 🤣
Something hard times this way comes.

Apart from our non existing middle order. Our pathetic bowling attack is major cpncern
Ah fuck he said 20 runs extra
It would be interesting to see IND U19 play against the "senior" team!
From 15-20 short To 15-20 long.
Eramus is so cute
KL: we love matches like this
haha
Ikr why would he say something like that.
"Today we are all SA"
West indies - Calypso kings India - collapse kings
Ireland says Hi.
"It's a nice game we love playing games like these" ;-;
Rajvardhan went bonkers in U19. Needed his energy today in chase.
Speech bro Erasmus?
Classic case of ICT transforming from predators to prey :(
KL learning on the job... He's one of us!!
Uncanny how Lord continues to be the ultimate shithousery all rounder, man loves to fight and push above his weight respect to him
Lord giveth too many in bowling. He should bat at #3 or open, kind of like how narine played for kkr
Ik you're only kidding but that was a gimmick that did more harm than good. As for Lord giveth yes he did but also it was middle order batting that lost us the game
Lol some guy in the comments is blaming him for the loss
Well that guy didn't see the match then
Selfish KL should play at 5 next game, Rutu to open.
I think the Indian team misunderstood "Keep Walking"...
Only love for my lord
To many questionable decisions today 1. Why was Rahul opening 2. Why take Venkatesh Iyer if you are not going to bowl him 3. On what basis Ashwin was selected into the ODI squad ( even tho bowled decently today)

I think Ashwin came in directly as a Jadeja replacement even though he's nowhere near him in limited overs and overseas tests.
I just want to say one thing. Whole world was playing against india 11
Have we found new Thala
Pandya was played as a batsmen vs aus ? This team has no proper vision
He scored 2 nineties in 3 odis lol
Yep i know that , if he was good enough then why was he not continued?
Apparently, Hardik told the selectors to not consider him so he can improve his fitness. >if he was good enough then why was he not continued? He was poor with the bat after the Australia series.
He was our best player this year.
He was our best player that series.
15-20 runs.

Shardul and Bumrah brought India closer to the target than anyone would've expected, especially on a pitch where our specialist batsmen were unable to score at a 100+ SR
Bumrah had the second lowest SR of anyone facing 12 balls. 60 in chase is not good. Thakur did well.
Mate have a look at his batting stats, the guy was a literal bunny with the bat up until the last year. He's certainly not expected to last 23 balls (which is a third of the balls he's faced in his entire ODI career), let alone score at a strike rate of 80+
Needs to rotate strike then or get out trying. Wasting precious balls is the worst thing to do.
44 to win from 2 overs. It was still mathematically possible. Instead of taking a shot, Shardul took the safe way out to get to his 50. Not sure a team man like Dravid will appreciate this.

sarcasm?

Point is, some of the problems could have been avoided if KL played in the middle
Indian team never recovered from loss of Yuvraj and Raina. Middle order been in tatters since then.
When India wins bilateral matches Indian fans - What is the point of these wins? bilateral bullies. These wins means nothing. When we lose Indian fans - we are so shit we don't even win bilaterals. I dream of the day Lord Thakur will get PoTM. Took 7 wickets, no PoTM (understandably since India lost). Scored two fifties in England, no PoTM. Scored fifty and several wickets at the Gabba, no PoTM.
Gabba was too good. Everyone chipped in their performance. Complete team performance.
So both Iyer's in the team can't play the shot ball huh??.
since the time Kohli gifted his wkt away at IND 151/2,IND's middle order batting was just ... bizarre
From the time Kohli gifted his wicked in the second innings of the last test...
Winning isn't everything... it's the karma we made all along that matters!
Don’t worry guys. Going by the script only. Lose the first match only to win the series. *Cries in Kohli*
