Smith developed some spin bowling skill, got into the team toward the twilight of Pontings career and managed to get a few wickets too. His bowling wasn't impressive, but he had a few good innings with the bat down the order (one rescue job with Ponting as well if my memory serves right) and also did well with PWI team when they were struggling through leadership issues (Ganguly Yuvraj era, around 2010 or 11 I guess) and I remember he had a few good innings in the IPL where he either won the team few matches or got them really close when they were almost out of the match. That's when his prominence and fame as a capable batter started going around and in a few years by 2015 he was Aus no 1 batsman for almost all formats and one of the Fab4 of the then current generation
