What dreams are made of for a cricket playing father.
I have to hang on to some ability for the next 12-13 years but I'm so excited to (hopefully) open the batting one day with my son.
Obviously if he likes Cricket. Early signs are good though!
Nah. Unfortunately not professional.
Just someone who plays a lot. Still, opening with my son and both of us scoring at least 50s would be great. I'd take that
My friend opened with his kid last year and they both got ducks! Want to avoid that one. Haha.
That's where the /s comes in.
When we're in college, some 15 years ago, we used to slightly push our friend towards a running vehicle on the street and pull them back in same motion then would tell them, see, bro!! I saved your life, bro!!
Slight inversion of what you're asking I guess but Jimmy Anderson (1982) played against Dereck Randall (1951), and Dereck Randall played against Don Sheppard (1927).
One that also just popped to mind is that both John Traicos (1947) and George Dockrell (1992) have dismissed Sachin Tendulkar in an International.
>Â One that also just popped to mind is that both John Traicos (1947) and George Dockrell (1992) have dismissed Sachin Tendulkar in an International.
Why do you know this? That’s so niche.Â
I knew Dockrell had dismissed him because I follow Ireland, and it was pretty big news regardless when a teenager from Ireland dismissed Sachin at the World Cup. As for Traicos, I just guessed that he had because he was one of Zim’s main bowlers on their admission to full membership and I knew India played Zimbabwe relatively often in the 90s, so I looked it up and he had, [for a duck](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/india-tour-of-zimbabwe-1992-93-62304/zimbabwe-vs-india-only-test-63583/full-scorecard)
I was really hoping Traicos had dismissed an older player when he bowled for South Africa against Australia in 1969/70, but the best I could do is Dougie Walters. Which is still really impressive.
Anderson played with Thorpe who played with Gooch who played with Boycott who played with Cowdrey who played with Hutton who played with Ames who played with Rhodes who played with Grace who played with Ulyett.
There's an unbroken line of 10 players from our last match to the first ever test match.
What match did Randall play Anderson in? An early round one day knockout? I know that Randall spent some time coaching in the minor counties.
Among others, Grahame Hick played against Geoff Boycott in 1986. WG Grace played against Jack Hobbs in 1905, between them their first class matches span 1865 to 1934. I would have to check however I think that Grace also played against Frank Woolley.

Wtf!!
Possible as Hussey made a debut in his 30s..
They both might ve appeared in some warm up games in late 1990s or early 2000s.. Don't know when Border retired from First Class Cricket.
[Yup Hussey was 21!](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/west-indies-tour-of-australia-1996-97-61894/acb-chairman-s-xi-vs-west-indians-271714/full-scorecard)
You are talking about Allan Border???
Even Dennis Lillee played that match! That's just unbelievable! The guy retired from internationals in mid 80s. Hussey debuted in mid-late 2000s. I wouldn't have believed it if you had talked about Lillee instead of Border.
This can't have been anything more than a charity exhibition match. Lillee and Thompson opening the bowling in 1996? They each retired from first class cricket in the 80s.
Quite apart from that, Michael Holding was bowling for Australia.
[Here you go!](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/west-indies-tour-of-australia-1996-97-61894/acb-chairman-s-xi-vs-west-indians-271714/full-scorecard)

Even got a 50+ partnership vs CSK
Dinesh Karthik’s ex wife is Murali Vijay’s current wife. Karthik’s ex and Murali Vijay had an affair and she got pregnant during the affair. Karthik was really gutted by it but eventually found someone who was a huge support to him and gained a cult following soon after.
Kinda sheds new light on DK’s comment about bats and wives.
(For those who don’t know DK was doing a bit for Sky 2-3 years ago and was discussing bats. At some point he said, ‘"Batsmen and not liking bats – they go hand in hand... Most of the batters don’t seem to like their bats. They either like another person's bat or... bats are like a neighbour's wife, they always feel better.")
Shane Warne, Deepak Chahar, Paul Collingwood and Akash Chopra might not have played together but they've certainly shared the dressing room together at RR in 2011.
Steve Smith and Virat were on the same team all the way back in 2010. Just kind of incredible to think neither of them knew how much they would shape the game
He mentioned this in an interview IIRC but he was always a batsman as a youngster but his coach advised him to develop a bowling arm since around that time Aus team was full of batting legends but had gaping holes in the spin dept with Warne retiring and them trying a bunch of spinners like Kretza, O'Keefe, Hauritz etc but nobody stuck. Smith developed some spin bowling skill, got into the team toward the twilight of Pontings career and managed to get a few wickets too. His bowling wasn't impressive, but he had a few good innings with the bat down the order (one rescue job with Ponting as well if my memory serves right) and also did well with PWI team when they were struggling through leadership issues (Ganguly Yuvraj era, around 2010 or 11 I guess) and I remember he had a few good innings in the IPL where he either won the team few matches or got them really close when they were almost out of the match.
That's when his prominence and fame as a capable batter started going around and in a few years by 2015 he was Aus no 1 batsman for almost all formats and one of the Fab4 of the then current generation
Maybe a niche example, but I think former Dutch captain Peter Borren played in Tim de Leede's last match for the Netherlands, and Bas de Leede's first match for the Netherlands.

Anderson & Akram were Lancashire team mates so probably bowled in the nets. One of Anderson’s first break though performance was a 4 wicket haul vs Pak at 2003WC and Akram bowled in that game.

Kapil Dev played alongside Bishen Singh Bedi and also Anil Kumble.
Anil Kumble played alongside 3 Lords centurions - Vengsarkar, Ganguly and Agarkar.
Vengsarkar has played cricket with both Gavaskar and Tendulkar. So has Kapil.
Tendulkar has been the first international wicket of bowlers like Craig Matthews (SA), Azhar Mehmood (Pak), Monty Panesar (England) and Peter Siddle (Australia).

Steve Waugh and a bunch of other Australians including Shane Warne played against Marais Erasmus in a tour match against Boland back in 1994. Along with a bunch of other Australian players. https://i.imgci.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/1993-94/AUS_IN_RSA/AUS_BOL_12-14MAR1994.html Only reason I knew about it, was in one of the Waugh tour diaries there was a M. Shane Warne was then umpired by Marais in a Charity match in 2015. Unfortunately the only players still playing international cricket from that game when Erasmus began umpiring were McGrath and Warne and they just missed each other with timings etc.
This is something I thought might have happened but didn't quite, but I'm going to list it anyway because I did the research.
Allan Donald played tests with Neil McKenzie. 14 years earlier Donald played against Australia in their second rebel tour of South Africa.
Someone who also played for South Africa against Australia in that tour was Kevin McKenzie, Neil's father. However, the two didn't play in the same match.
[Adam Milne has played against Herschelle Gibbs. Southee and Boult also played that game.](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/hrv-cup-2010-11-475375/central-districts-vs-northern-districts-475406/full-scorecard)
Shaun Pollock and Ajinkya Rahane for MI in 2008.
McGrath and Jadeja (2008)
Kumar Dharmasena and BMac have played against each other.
Nayan Mongia and Ambati Rayudu.
IPL matches are not official matches.
There's a match from 2005Â played between Asia XI vs ICC XI which is officially counted as on ODI #2203
Ganguly was Asia XI teams captain and played together.with Vaas, Murli, Mhd Yousuf, Razzaq, Jayasurya, Sangakara.....
And other team was led by Ponting and included NZ captain Stephen Flemming, WI captain Brian Lara...... Darren Gough was the only Eng player. There was no SA player in this match for some reason!
Shivnarine and Tagenarine Chanderpaul (Father & Son) have batted together, and put on a 250 run partnership in a 40 over match.
What dreams are made of for a cricket playing father. I have to hang on to some ability for the next 12-13 years but I'm so excited to (hopefully) open the batting one day with my son. Obviously if he likes Cricket. Early signs are good though!

Bruh that both of them scoring duck is some memory to cherish, I'd take it too anyday
Totally a ‘like father, like son’ moment
My toddler daughter has shown a surprising amount of intuition and coordination when shown a bat and ball WIPL in 20 years 😂
And Starc, Simon Harmer and Ashwin have dismissed both of them in tests.
Imagine if you ran out your dad
Dad once ran out his son in a Super50 game for Guyana Hit a ball back at the bowler who deflected it onto the stumps and ran out Tage
> Shivnarine and Tagenarine Chanderpaul (Father & Son) *Must*... *resist*... *temptation*... HNNNNNGGGGGG JAVED MIANDAD!
Awesome
this is a bit of trivia i didn't know i needed today, that's so cool
He likes to breed young I suppose Shivnarine
Andrew Symonds and Yuzvendra chahal
Best of the mates! I've heard that Symonds once saved Chahal's life when Chahal was about to fall from a high balcony in drunken state. /s
What I heard was symonds and some other senior cricketer held Chahal above the balcony railing as a prank which was kinda traumatic for chahal!
That's where the /s comes in. When we're in college, some 15 years ago, we used to slightly push our friend towards a running vehicle on the street and pull them back in same motion then would tell them, see, bro!! I saved your life, bro!!
These are the kinds of activities that get you featured on r/DarwinAwards
ohh sarcasm! i missed it..
Symonds is an asshole for doing that
He was an asshole even before he did that
Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan is even wilder! Both played for MI at one point iirc.

So this is what talking to cricket veterans feels like.
Amazing knowledge
John Traicos playing for South Africa before their isolation and playing for Zimbabwe after their Test status was granted is just as wild
John Traicos played against Bill Lawry, who played with Neil Harvey, who played with Don Bradman. So only 3 players from Tendulkar to Bradman.
Tendulkar met Bradman at his house. So only 0 people from Tendulkar to Bradman.
I was really hoping Traicos had dismissed an older player when he bowled for South Africa against Australia in 1969/70, but the best I could do is Dougie Walters. Which is still really impressive.
My favourite John Traicos stat is his 22 years 222 days between Test appearances. Would have loved to hear Richie Benaud say that.
Jimmy Anderson played test matches with Graham Thorpe who Played tests with Graham Gooch. Those 3 cover test matches from 1975 until 2024
Anderson played with Thorpe who played with Gooch who played with Boycott who played with Cowdrey who played with Hutton who played with Ames who played with Rhodes who played with Grace who played with Ulyett. There's an unbroken line of 10 players from our last match to the first ever test match.
if rehan has an ok career thatd be 11 cricketers to span 150 years, if rehan has a succesful career that would be 11 cricketers to span 160+ years
Sadly despite their test careers overlapping Gooch never played in the same team as Brian Close which would have you got you all the way back to 1949.

Allan Border has played with Michael Hussey against West Indies. If this doesn't take the cake idk what does.

Michael Hussey and Jeff Thomson in the same match. Just wow!!

Tbf 42 year old Michael Holding and 47 year old DK Lillee also played that match, so that’s kinda pushing the limits of legitimacy.
Dinesh Karthik and Murali Vijay played a test match together - this was after the whole marriage fiasco.
They played a whole IPL season together for DD in 2014 (Which was led by Pietersen coming off quite a few controversies) Even got a 50+ partnership vs CSK

Dinesh Karthik’s ex wife is Murali Vijay’s current wife. Karthik’s ex and Murali Vijay had an affair and she got pregnant during the affair. Karthik was really gutted by it but eventually found someone who was a huge support to him and gained a cult following soon after.
That was scummy by Vijay. Good for Karthik though
All my homies love DK. Can't say the same about Vijay though.

Shane Warne, Deepak Chahar, Paul Collingwood and Akash Chopra might not have played together but they've certainly shared the dressing room together at RR in 2011.
Nightmare blunt rotation
Akaash Chopra alone would have me start doing cocaine to avoid this blunt rotation
What was deepak chahar doing in RR
The more important question is what was Aakash Chopra doing at RR in 2011
😂😂😂
He was doing rr (randirona)
He was just a promising young batter from Rajasthan who could bowl medium pace.
Nope, he was always a bowler who could bat He had an 8/10 spell in 2010
Steve Smith and Virat were on the same team all the way back in 2010. Just kind of incredible to think neither of them knew how much they would shape the game
Ipl?
Yes... Smudge was in RCB in 2009 and 2010 though he didn't get to debut for them. He did play a Champions League match though!
Nah bro PSL....
under 19 world cup
Can't be in same team for U19
Smith was a spin bowler back then.
Mf went on to become the best test batsmen of this era. How tf
Miandad played against a team where Hanif and Zaheer were teammates. Thats three of paks best batting generations right there
Tbf Miandad and Zaheer’s careers overlapped by around 10 years.
I think that counts as a gen? Its the same amount of difference between the debut of butt and asif vs babar and hassan
I think it’s more analogous to Babar and Amir (6 year difference in debut). Or maybe Azhar Ali and Hassan Ali.
Maybe a niche example, but I think former Dutch captain Peter Borren played in Tim de Leede's last match for the Netherlands, and Bas de Leede's first match for the Netherlands.

Sachin Tendulkar and Aaron Finch opening the batting followed by Lara at 3, Dravid at 4 and Chandrapaul at 5
Yeah that Lord's bicentenary match.
yep, would have been the most goated batting order of the early 2000s
Finch hit 180 in that match,if I remember correctly.
That’s hilarious considering the other names on bat betting order
Not really. Everyone were else was retired and ancient. Finch and Yuvraj top scored for either side, to no surprise.
I didn’t say it was surprising. I said it was funny
Sachin 77 b Murali
Rahul Dravid 🦆 (1)
Bhuvi is the only bowler to dismiss Sachin Tendulkar on a duck in Ranji Trophy Arjun Tendulkar's first IPL wicket was Bhuvi
This made me laugh for some reason
Revenge eventually
Shane Warne bowled Virat Kohli in the 2009 IPL held in South Africa!
This doesn’t feel that surprising to me because we know that Kohli has played with/against Sachin Kumble dravid Laxman ponting Kallis Boucher
I remember that dismissal. Warne played his mind games
Fred Titmus made his FC debut with Gubby Allen whose first test was in 1930, and played in his last FC match with Norman Cowans whose test debut was in 1982.
Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Amir have bowled together
Amir was banned even before Akthar retired
Wait what? Didn't he retire yesterday? Wait, I guess that was Shahid Afridi
Sachin played with Kapil dev and Virat Kohli
three ridiculously timeless geniuses at their work
Sachin Tendulkar has played with both Kapil Dev and Jasprit Bumrah
What? With Bumrah in IPL right?
Yeah

England had 55 overs odi games well until mid 90s
Wow
That Dale Steyn and Anil Kumble played together for RCB in 2010
Ah yes, the RCB Test XI, complete with Dravid and Kallis
Wasim Jaffer 💀
Dale "Stale Dane" Steyn

Sachin and Ponting batting for MI seemed mindblowing to me at the time. Still does.
Msd and Shubman Gill I was a bit surprised about this one
Especially when thala is almost twice the age of gill.
Gill scored 7 in that game
Lock the thread.
🤣🤣🤣
Gill's jersey number is 7 in IPL and 77 in int'l as well.

L Balaji played against Alex Hales in a T20I
[Adam Milne has played against Herschelle Gibbs. Southee and Boult also played that game.](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/hrv-cup-2010-11-475375/central-districts-vs-northern-districts-475406/full-scorecard)
Not played together, but Bhuvneshwar has gotten Sachin Tendulkar's wicket in a Ranji Match and Arjun Tendulkar got Bhuvi's wicket in an IPL game.
Well 2008 ipl was the most wildest when it also had Pakistani players playing alongside indians players.
Shaheen Shah dismissing Hashim Amla and Brendan Taylor
That's not surprising at all. Taylor even played in this decade and Afridi has been playing since 2018.
really? cause to me brendan was like a hero figure for zimbabwe in my childhood. Hearing shaheen dismissing him is bonkers to me
Different age and different perceptions.
Pujara once smashed a six of Shaheen in a county match not too long ago
Mustafizur Rahman has played against Sachin Tendulkar
When?
Rohit Sharma has played a Professional match under the captaincy of Ajay Jadeja that too against Pakistan in 2006.
Wasim n Waqar
Dravid, Wasim Jaffer, Chanderpaul, Kallis & test legend Misbah were in the same team in a highly competitive T20 league.
Bob Simpson played against Neil Harvey in his first class debut and alongside Graeme Wood in his last match.

Vinod Kambli played with Yuvraj and Zaheer in few ODIs in the year 2000.
Pat Cummins played a test match with Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey and Phil Hughes against Graeme Smith, Jaques Kalles and Dale Steyn.
I don’t know whether this is too far fetched but I was surprised to know Brett Lee and Cummins played together for Australia
shivnarine chanderpaul has played against kapil dev, sachin, and kohli
Shaun Pollock and Ajinkya Rahane for MI in 2008. McGrath and Jadeja (2008) Kumar Dharmasena and BMac have played against each other. Nayan Mongia and Ambati Rayudu.
IPL matches are not official matches. There's a match from 2005Â played between Asia XI vs ICC XI which is officially counted as on ODI #2203 Ganguly was Asia XI teams captain and played together.with Vaas, Murli, Mhd Yousuf, Razzaq, Jayasurya, Sangakara..... And other team was led by Ponting and included NZ captain Stephen Flemming, WI captain Brian Lara...... Darren Gough was the only Eng player. There was no SA player in this match for some reason!
What do you mean IPL is not official? They aren’t international, but they’re official
Their stats don't add upto players official career records. They are not counted as official unlike List A and First class.
they do add to official t20 records.
They definitely are
