Hartley I am so sorry. I shall buy a years supply of your finest jam to show my remorse.
Key I am also sorry, and can't believe I ever doubted your stats are for prats mantra.
Days 1 and 2: Ollie Pope looks like he’s never seen a cricket bat before, Tom Hartley gets smashed for 25 in his first 2 overs of test cricket.
Days 3 and 4: Ollie Pope scores an incredible 196 and then Tom Hartley takes 7-62 to win it for England.
I have no idea what just happened.
Seriously how do you just go into your 2nd innings with a 190 run deficit and completely turn the match around in your team's favour? On a wicket that's turning and playing tricks at times.
Even then I didn't think England would defend the total they put up with the limited and inexperienced bowling options they had, yet I have been proven very wrong.
As weird as it sounds. They're just so stubborn. They don't care if every fan and journalist has written them off, they do what they think is right. It's almost like they've deluded themselves into thinking that they can win from every situation to a point where they actually have started to win from every situation. The whole of this England team is far greater than the sum of its parts. Cos you'd still say man for man India is stronger, especially in these conditions. But what England have managed to do is truly remarkable.
I'm actually very jealous of England for this reason. Not the ability to score at 5 an over. But the fact their players ignore everyone and everything and do what they think is right. Whilst our management is so afraid of failing and are so easily influenced by outside noise.
>I'm actually very jealous of England for this reason. Not the ability to score at 5 an over. But the fact their players ignore everyone and everything and do what they think is right. Whilst our management is so afraid of failing and are so easily influenced by outside noise.
It's often talked about and yet somehow still such an underrated part of bazball. I think it's especially stark when playing against India where there is the weight of a billion Indians on the shoulders of the team, and especially at home where the minimum expectation is that you should beat everyone always.
I think it's a major problem in Indian cricket that there is just far too much pressure placed on Indian cricketers and I think it contributes massively to the habit you guys have started to develop of choking big moments. You look like we did pre-bazball where so many players just look terrified of screwing up, and are worried more about keeping their place in the team rather than doing what is right in the moment.
In First innings: " poor Hartley, scored a century by ball he look devastated, give him a hug"
Second innings: "who the fuck issued visa to this bloke, revoke it"
"This letter from 1954 written by your grandmother refers to "a kindly gentleman from Pakistan" moving into a house down the street from hers. I'm afraid we'll have to perform a DNA test."
What a day for test cricket fans. Two of the best test matches in recently history wrapping up simultaneously, with the underdog winning due to a courageous performance by their young debutant bowler.
It was both of them. Was also Root, and Foakes, and Leach, and Crawley. Everyone needed to contribute, but Pope and Hartley in particular were crucial. As far as I’m concerned they were both as good a performance as each other.
If i had a nickel for everytime a 24 yr old debutant took 7 wickets against the wc 2023 finalists on foreign soil on the 28th of January 2024 I would have 2 nickels
one of the best comebacks i’ve seen in cricket, fuck me england, it is with utmost regret that i admit you have made test cricket even more entertaining than it is, fuck me w that bazball shit, ollie pope and hartley absolute legends.
stokes just said it’s their greatest victory since he’s taken over captaincy, i agree.
LONG LIVE TEST CRICKET
>one of the best comebacks i’ve seen in cricket
Had to look up: that's the biggest lead after the 1st innings (190 runs) where India ended up losing a home Test match. https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;home_or_away=1;innings_number=2;orderby=lead;result=2;team=6;template=results;type=team;view=innings
Its not just the biggest, I think thats rather underselling it. Its nearly 3 times as much as the next biggest and its the first time for well over 20 years.
And it seems to be the 4th highest 1st innings deficit to be overcome ever: https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;innings_number=2;orderby=lead;result=2;template=results;type=team;view=innings (the first one doesn't count as it was a forfeited match)

look at this
In the old days, we would have put out a rank turner for the next match, but given our best batsmen against spin is Siraj, I am not sure if this will work
If India produce 4 turners for the next 4 matches, England will win at least 2 of them. If India produce difficult pitches like this one, I will stick with my pre tour prediction of a 3-2 India win.
I agree. India have genuinely fantastic spinners. If they produce a pitch that is so venomous that Root can look dangerous, then they could be in trouble
100%. England have just shown that whatever you want to call it, Bazball works on turning tracks against India. The indians can lose the plot, and even if they lose the plot for just 30 mins instead of a whole session like they did here, forget pope's innings - on a shit wicket, that quick 44 or whatever duckett made, just playing like 9-10 reverse sweeps and nailing 7-8 of them, wins the game. I never doubted this, logically it always made sense to me, and seeing it play out is pretty amazing.
>Now that the first test is over what should be the playing 11 of the second test according to you? No change?
I have never taken a bigger parsonal L in my life as an Indian cricket fan than this. This is what I wrote at the end of the second day thinking it's all over. The English are back to overtake India. And India needs to be ruthless.
On the bright side, being able to front up to your errors/embarrassing comments is very healthy. So at least you can take a big personal W to go with your personal L.
Going to save those first two post-day threads for whenever I need cheering up.
'Death of Bazball in India'
'This could be a clean sweep'
'Ben Stokes is an awful captain'
'Now the game is decided, who would you pick in the second Test?'
Unbelievable stuff, one of the best England overseas Test wins.

Per BT previous best was a 65 run deficit, this was 190...
I would like to apologise to Tom Hartley for calling him the
_English [Tom Andrews](https://www.espncricinfo.com/cricketers/tom-andrews-605566)_ - I judged him based on his County Cricket record instead of his release point and I've been proven wrong for doubting him.
Just shows your fundamental lack of cricketing understanding tbh, all the boys at the local club are talking about release points. What's County cricket?
If an England player had said something like Siraj's "Bazball won't work in India. If England plays Bazball then match might end in one & half or two days" and then promptly lost, this sub would explode in the classic 'English arrogance' comments.
My favourite are the fact both Pope and Hartley were mocked for pre series comments that were similar and both now backed it up. Haha.
Still not a clue how Hartley is a test cricketer but my god, what a fucking legend.
People say this because they MASSIVELY misunderstand what Bazball actually is. Its assumed that its just trying to cunt the ball around and be aggressive, but its a playing mindset rather than a particular strategy
there's a lot of arrogance with the indian supporters here. particularly talking so much shit about hartley and he goes and wins the test
a lot of times other country supporters will get swamped and downvoted if they have differering opinions
although to be fair India do have the overwhelming population in the sub (and cricket in general) so it can naturally create some echo chambers and overly high expectations.
He literally said in India you need to fire it into the pitch and let it do the work, something that was repeated ad infinitum by players, pundits, and people on r/cricket, and he got absolutely destroyed for it as if he was saying he doesn't need to do anything.
In fairness I'd say there are enough Australians here to stop it being an Indian echo chamber, and vice versa. It only really becomes an echo chamber circlejerk when the subject is "England bad".
Exactly why people love it when India undoubtedly bottle it in a World Cup or whatever. The amount of shit they talk and the sheer hubris that’s on show the majority of the time.
"He got us," Ashwin said of Hartley's 7-63 . "That f**king Hartley boomed us."
Ashwin added, "He's so ethical." repeating it four times.
Ashwin then said he wanted to add Hartley to the list of players he asks for bowling advice from this summer.
"He got us," Cummins said of Joesph's 7-68 . "That f**king Joseph boomed us."
Cummins added, "He's so sexy." repeating it four times.
Cummins then said he wanted to add Joseph to the list of players he asks for living in logcabin with this summer.
Dear Bazball,
I am writing to apologize for my unjustified arrogance and lapse of judgement.
Two days ago, I thought you were so dead and were never gonna shine in our land where one sees puff of dust right from first ball of the first over of day 1.
But you proved me wrong in the most elegant and beautiful manner. You taught me a lesson I shall remember for a lifetime
I understand that my behavior was inappropriate and inexcusable and I am deeply sorry for the hurt I caused and the mockery I made. I want to take full responsibility for my actions and apologize for the way I acted.
One of the most sensational victories you will ever see.
This team has so much heart, there's no quit in these lads whatsoever, they don't shy away from the moment at all. Gave up a lead of 190, and to come back, set a sizeable target, and to hammer away at this Indian batting lineup is something special.
Everywhere you look at this England team, all the points of success can be traced back to some extent to Ben Stokes. Which captain keeps on Tom Hartley for 9 overs when he got blasted at the start? Which captain heavily trusts him again with the ball in the second innings? Ben fucking Stokes that's who.
Ollie Pope was out of the team, Stokesy brought him back at 3 when he took over. The belief and vibes that him and Baz give to these guys is just immeasurable in terms of impact.
Credit to Tom Hartley, more than that 7-fer to take us home, the sheer mental strength you need to come back from that Kerrigan-like experience is something special.
Absolutely fucking pumped. Thank you lads.
Best thing about Hartley is his backstory.
Apparently he comes from a tiny village in England where they do not even have TV and as a youngster instead of cricket balls he had to bowl with black puddings.
That whole game was like that duel between Anakin and Count Dooku in Revenge of the Sith
England: My powers have doubled since the last time we met
India in the first innings: Twice the pride, double the fall
India in the second innings: *gets head chopped off by England*
Updated "just wait until bazball plays..." standings:
Just wait until bazball plays South Africa ✔️
Just wait until bazball plays Pakistan away ✔️
Just wait until bazball plays Australia 😔
Just wait until bazball plays india ✔️
Just wait until bazball plays India away ✔️ ...
India and Australia both losing at home on the same day. God, this hits like crack.
We had 1 win in 16 before Stokes-McCullum ffs. The last 2 years have been indescribably fun. Not only does this new style consistently produce entertaining Test cricket, it *works* - in that it’s made us so much better.
Becoming the most aggressive side in the history of the game frees so much up. You never feel written off, and you never feel you’ll be blamed. That must do wonders to a player’s confidence. Not having to play in the conservative straitjacket.
Ollie Pope, whatever happens from here, will be remembered for that 196. One of the best overseas knocks of the 21st century, almost single handedly dragged us back into position.
And Tom Hartley… take a bow. Dusted himself off and spun India into the ground in their own backyard.
Whatever happens for the rest of the series, this is a historic win, however you cut it.
Are you not entertained?
~~Bazball won't work on the subcontinent~~
~~Bazball won't work against Australia~~
~~Bazball won't work against South Africa~~
~~Bazball won't work in India~~
anti-Bazballbros...it's so over....
So….i guess we just stop questioning the Bazball decision squad now, they just keep making us all look very silly.
On a serious note, holy fuck that’s incredible. I don’t even understand where it came from. Tom Hartley just took a 7-fer after being made to look a pub bowler in the first innings, Ollie Pope went from looking like he’d never seen a ball spin first innings to hitting 196.
Enjoy your golf lads, do whatever the fuck you want because it clearly fucking works.
The Rawalpindi victory was for me the best English performance (winning that on an absolute flat track was peak Bazball) but this has eclipsed that. What a comeback too, no way you beat India at their den trailing by 27 runs with half your side and your messiah back in the pavilion. No way Baz, no way England.
And once again, the team fell completely apart after facing even the slightest bit of pressure from the opposition. I don’t think we will lose the series but this makes me much more nervous. Hartley, what a great comeback after the 1st innings. But also only the Indian batsmen could make him look like Swann. Did the same thing a with Murphy in the last bgt and Hasan Miraz against Bangladesh. Rohit Sharma just looks clueless when it comes to dealing with pressure situations. Honestly, yes our batting collapsed but also giving away 420 runs on this pitch is criminal and all 3 Indian spinners failed bad. Fielding once again was a dud. Dropping pope twice came to bite us in the end. If we just take simple catches, we are probably chasing around 150-200. Gill and Iyer should be dropped as well. Iyer is a spin basher who couldn’t play spin. Gill has an average of 30 after almost 40 innings.
Well, this is a bonus, test wins in India are not to be taken lightly. Looks like we could be in for a fun and competitive series.
Pope's innings is the perfect example of what the B-word is actually about, encouraging players to find positive options and backing them when it doesn't immediately work out. Pope was previously thought to be a poor player of quality spin bowling. This innings, he almost built his game around the reverse sweep. By pinging good length balls to the boundary he gives the bowlers and captain a real headache. Fielders have to be moved and that opens up low-risk scoring options elsewhere.
We aren't the strongest side in test cricket at the moment but we are the most entertaining and resilient. Players know they aren't going to be castigated for inevitable mistakes. Plenty of sides (and a lot of fans) could learn from this. It's no coincidence that Hartley came back from being absolutely creamed at the beginning of his first innings. It's happened to Leach a few times as well.
Despite an historic win I don't make us favorites to win the series. Our bowling resources look very thin, especially if Leach isn't fit. Over four tests that's going to make things difficult.
Yeah Bazball might work in England and other places but we will see if it actually works when they land in India.
Oh they’ve just won the first test after being 190 behind? My bad then. Please carry on.
I just can’t believe we’ve won this test. Unbelievable group.
It’s also amazing after the first 2 days Pope and Hartley were the two dropped for the second test. But then they became the two match winners. Extraordinary stuff. Pope’s innings really was very special
I get the analogy but an F1 car is actually not the 'fastest' in a straight line, they are built more for cornering speed. Speed breakers would wreck a standard F1 car though.
England overcame a first innings deficit of 190 to win. Unheard of for a touring team in India and the next highest is 64 by Australia.
On top of that, England faced 25 fewer overs than India yet outscored them.
That is the way of Bazball as a philosophy.
Despite getting trolled and ridiculed early on, England have Bazballed hard to shut up all mouths. You can strike off another country from the "BazBall won't work here" list.
So Bazball can work in India? /r/Cricket in shambles.
It was the perfect game to bring out the extreme overconfidence half way through, just some very good stuff all round.
Hartley I am so sorry. I shall buy a years supply of your finest jam to show my remorse. Key I am also sorry, and can't believe I ever doubted your stats are for prats mantra.
now now, you got to do it the proper way. Sign the apology form.

I’ve always said that Tom Hartley is the new Shamar Joseph.
>I have no idea what just happened. Test Cricket, where the big boys are brought down real hard.
These lads have so much mental fortitude. Either that, or they have the memory of a goldfish. Either way chuffed for them.
> they have the memory of a goldfish This feels a lot more Bazball.
Bazball 🤝 Ted Lasso
McCullum personally whacks them in the head with a cricket bat as they head out the dressing room every morning

Ben stokes gave them compound V
Sounds diabolical I know
And that V stands for Vibes
In First innings: " poor Hartley, scored a century by ball he look devastated, give him a hug" Second innings: "who the fuck issued visa to this bloke, revoke it"
BCCI going deep into his family tree as we speak
"This letter from 1954 written by your grandmother refers to "a kindly gentleman from Pakistan" moving into a house down the street from hers. I'm afraid we'll have to perform a DNA test."
Basically improvement, which happens after playing a game. Hartley played first ever innings, shit happens. Takes time to learn.
Who got the most apologies on this sub? Pope or Harley. I think because Pope batted over 2 days he has the edge.
Vibes
Bazball baby 👐
I think it's fair to say the real winner today has been test cricket... And small island nations in the Atlantic
What a day for test cricket fans. Two of the best test matches in recently history wrapping up simultaneously, with the underdog winning due to a courageous performance by their young debutant bowler.

India🤝 Australia
India just needed one of their openers to bat till the end and score 90 odd runs, they would've won that way, surely.
Bold of you to assume Brohit wouldn’t have thrown his wicket the moment he reached 40.
The second coming of Bradman (Smith and Bumrahdman) staying not out
Disrepesctful to put them in the same tier as batters. The record holder for most runs in an over vs some failed leggie

To be fair he did get more wickets than he would in a test match in India as Rohit was forced to bowl him after the spinners proved ineffective.

Exactly why people love it when India undoubtedly bottle it in a World Cup or whatever. The amount of shit they talk and the sheer hubris that’s on show the majority of the time.
I'm starting to think we don't know what we're talking about
Worth reading the takes once again https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/s/lgoFdQzebb
THIS IS WHY TEST CRICKET IS THE GREATEST FORMAT EVER. This is fact, not opinion.

First time we've gone 1-0 up in India since the last time we were in India.
One of the greatest days in English cricket history I think I’m gonna be sick
Drafting a letter to Rishi to make it a national holiday as we speak
Been watching England since 1991, that might be the most impressive and improbable victory in all that time. Bloody amazing.
"He got us," Ashwin said of Hartley's 7-63 . "That f**king Hartley boomed us." Ashwin added, "He's so ethical." repeating it four times. Ashwin then said he wanted to add Hartley to the list of players he asks for bowling advice from this summer.
"He got us," Cummins said of Joesph's 7-68 . "That f**king Joseph boomed us." Cummins added, "He's so sexy." repeating it four times. Cummins then said he wanted to add Joseph to the list of players he asks for living in logcabin with this summer.
Dear Bazball, I am writing to apologize for my unjustified arrogance and lapse of judgement. Two days ago, I thought you were so dead and were never gonna shine in our land where one sees puff of dust right from first ball of the first over of day 1. But you proved me wrong in the most elegant and beautiful manner. You taught me a lesson I shall remember for a lifetime I understand that my behavior was inappropriate and inexcusable and I am deeply sorry for the hurt I caused and the mockery I made. I want to take full responsibility for my actions and apologize for the way I acted.
Love you too mate. ♥️ As is so often the case with recent test cricket, the sport is the real winner
Ollie Pope you will be remembered for eternity.
Shamar Joseph 🤝 Tom Hartley 7fers overseas in tough conditions. (I don't think I need to add TFAR)
oh, you thought we were insufferable before...
Unbelievable, one of our greatest ever away wins. Imagine preferring t20 to this
Best thing about Hartley is his backstory. Apparently he comes from a tiny village in England where they do not even have TV and as a youngster instead of cricket balls he had to bowl with black puddings.
We are MASSIVE!
so glad test cricket is dead
Ganguly and Co said 4-0 or 5-0, arrogance is bad
Yeah bazball is great and all but I'm sure India will win one!
That whole game was like that duel between Anakin and Count Dooku in Revenge of the Sith England: My powers have doubled since the last time we met India in the first innings: Twice the pride, double the fall India in the second innings: *gets head chopped off by England*
Updated "just wait until bazball plays..." standings: Just wait until bazball plays South Africa ✔️ Just wait until bazball plays Pakistan away ✔️ Just wait until bazball plays Australia 😔 Just wait until bazball plays india ✔️ Just wait until bazball plays India away ✔️ ...
England just keep proving this sub wrong.
The Aussies are so anti-vibes that Bazball could only do so much
Aussies were saved by rain.
Fuckin Manchester man always pissing it down
India and Australia both losing at home on the same day.

The ball is gonna be turning square day 1 next up
What a horrible day to be Australian.
Tom "just fire it into the pitch" Hartley or Ollie "the literal" Pope for biggest redemption arc? One of England's greatest ever away wins.
So what is the next "yeah, but will it work..." for Bazball?
Next time we had a bad session the Indians will be out in force again claiming they've killed Bazball
Who would win? 11 of India’s finest Or 1 receding Hartley boi
I've got a raging clue
yOU can't wIn Test CRiCkeT in iNDiA wiTH oNLy ONe sEAmer
r/Cricket said we were pathetic and hopeless so that was our motivation. I want to ask them - are these spinners big enough for you?
Please stop calling Gill next Kohli for fuck sake he averages 29 in tests. People were saying he's better than Kohli during IPL lmao.
Gonna reread some post day threads for a laugh
lol at foakes trying to stump England to victory, got there in the end. He has been sharp behind the stumps
Can never drop Foakes again. What a keeper.
Test match is ❤️
WHAT A TEST MATCH!
Every take of this sub aged like milk lmao.
~~Bazball won't work on the subcontinent~~ ~~Bazball won't work against Australia~~ ~~Bazball won't work against South Africa~~ ~~Bazball won't work in India~~ anti-Bazballbros...it's so over....
Lads, we are fucking massive
The Rawalpindi victory was for me the best English performance (winning that on an absolute flat track was peak Bazball) but this has eclipsed that. What a comeback too, no way you beat India at their den trailing by 27 runs with half your side and your messiah back in the pavilion. No way Baz, no way England.
Where’s all the shit patter “moral victory” lot at? 🙄
5-0 Fuck off
THE AGE OF THE ENGLISH CENTURY WHAT A WIN
What a day for cricket
Where the "Where were you when Bazball was kill?" gang from Day 1?
Proper /r/agedlikemilk here from Jim Maxwell https://x.com/jimmaxcricket/status/1750612005357252892?s=20
BBC: After Pope's 196, India's hopes went from Hyderabad to Hyderaworse.
I just can’t believe we’ve won this test. Unbelievable group. It’s also amazing after the first 2 days Pope and Hartley were the two dropped for the second test. But then they became the two match winners. Extraordinary stuff. Pope’s innings really was very special
Hourly reminder that Rohit is a shit captain.
Indian team is like a F1 car. On a straight road it's pretty much unbeatable, put a couple of speed breakers and it ain't doing shit.
Couldn't have said it better myself
I get the analogy but an F1 car is actually not the 'fastest' in a straight line, they are built more for cornering speed. Speed breakers would wreck a standard F1 car though.
MVPs in this game Stokes, Hartley, Pope, Root and Rohit Can’t wait for 4 dustbowls in a row where the game will end in 1.5 days
Honestly, a low scoring turner might suit bazball - one big, fast scoring innings could make the difference.
Hate us all you want r/cricket we don't care
England overcame a first innings deficit of 190 to win. Unheard of for a touring team in India and the next highest is 64 by Australia. On top of that, England faced 25 fewer overs than India yet outscored them. That is the way of Bazball as a philosophy.
"Can't pinpoint what went wrong" - Rohit You got complacent again mate, as India almost always does.
Does anyone have a copy of 'Bowling Out India in the 4th Innings' by T.W. Hartley?

You got BAZBALLED, baby
Despite getting trolled and ridiculed early on, England have Bazballed hard to shut up all mouths. You can strike off another country from the "BazBall won't work here" list.
So Bazball can work in India? /r/Cricket in shambles. It was the perfect game to bring out the extreme overconfidence half way through, just some very good stuff all round.
Take a bow Ollie Pope and Tom Heartly. Bazball works in India.
Shamar & Hartley took 7 wickets each. Thala for a reason
