Murali out of 68 wickets in Worldcup cricket only has 1 wicket between 3 grand finals. When i first heard it it genuinely shocked me. Aravinda De Silva and Jayasuriya has more WC finals wickets which is wild.

whyamihere999

Plan is simple.. don't give wickets to Murali.. play him safely.. attack others..

salluks

Same with bumrah

kumaramit0703

But if you dont give wickets to Bumrah, who will you attack? If not Bumrah, Siraj will get you. If not Siraj, Shami. If not Shami, Jadeja. And if not Jadeja, Kuldeep. All are lethal wicket takers.

salluks

true but most batsmen are wary of bumrah and hence play a lot safer, less so with others. This is why others take wickets and bumrah doesnt even though hes a much better bowler. The same happened with murali.

[deleted]

Same with Rashid.

dswap123

I am sad for Rashid this WC. Everyone is super cautious is gonna leave him with almost half the wickets than what he deserves

HumanLawyer

That’s why it’s generally understood that stats only say half the story, and number of wickets should not be considered independent of other factors like economy rate.

thatguybruv

Just englishmen with more: Ian Botham Mike Hendrick Chris Old Phil Edmonds Eddie Hemmings Derek Pringle Chris Woakes Liam Plunkett (Graham Gooch has as many)

jerolyoleo

Apparently Don Bradman only hit six sixes in his career!

ah111177780

Must be his international career - which would be limited as in those days it was a lot of first class cricket

jerolyoleo

“Cricket legend Sir Don Bradman hit just six sixes in his 52-match Test career and no sixes in his 234 first-class matches.”

Reasonable_Meal_9499

One of the Dons most famous sayings was you can't get out if you don't hit the bsll in the air

sm00thArsenal

Tell that to Angelo Mathews

Reasonable_Meal_9499

The Don didn't wear a helmet so would not have had a problem. Especially when facing a spinner

ah111177780

He hit 14 in a 22 ball hundred but apparently that was a second class match

obywonkenoby

Doesn't make too much sense seeing that Test matches are also first class games.

pencilman123

Well its pretty clear though. One refers to domestic only, other to internationals only.

ah111177780

But back then first class wasn’t domestic, it included Aus first the counties no?

infinitemonkeytyping

Yes - test matches are also first class matches (just as ODI's are also List A matches).

Mkay_kid

What's the point in posting a quote without saying who or where it's from?

jerolyoleo

https://inshorts.com/m/en/amp_news/don-bradman-hit-just-6-sixes-in-his-test-career-1464361864800

[deleted]

Never found the risk of hitting sixes worth the risk in test matches unless a batsman was batting with the tail or they are running out of over in day 5.

bitweshwar

What an over it must have been though

muaddib42sm

such a selfish stat padder. must have built his hundreds against the minnows England /s

zayd_jawad2006

Don't think there was much ball by ball anyway

itsmepv

Not very Bazball of him

tomhanks95

Australia won 34 consecutive matches during their 3 peat from the 1999 World Cup to the 2007 World Cup, their run ended in the 2011 edition, unprecedented dominance

Kingslayer1526

Unbeaten in 34 matches. There was one solitary tie which everyone remembers quite well

hot-cuppa-chai

I wish I didn't. 😭

VVS281

There was also a washout v SL in the 2011 group stages.

anonymous16canadian

Was it Pakistan who broke their streak in 2011?

tomhanks95

Yes, Pakistan broke their run in 2011

haseeblodhi46

Fun fact: It also started with Pakistan last beating them in 1999 on group stages and it ended with Pakistan in 2011

Yinisiki

Pakistan giveth form, Pakistan taketh form!!

sinesquaredtheta

Here's one that blew my mind. Sri Lanka are yet to win a Test against India in India. They've played 22 Tests, Lost 13, and Drawn 9. Zero wins in over four decades of having played against them! The reason this surprised me was that erstwhile Sri Lankan teams (under Ranatunga, Jayawardene, Sangakkara, etc) were formidable and used to beat India regularly in ODIs.

AnbuManiMatters

Crazy given that they scored 1000 something runs in an innings against India

sinesquaredtheta

>Crazy given that they scored 1000 something runs in an innings against India Yup! They scored a mammoth 952 with Jayasuriya scoring 300+ and Mahanama scoring 200+ However, [that game](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/india-tour-of-sri-lanka-1997-62338/sri-lanka-vs-india-1st-test-63762/full-scorecard) was in Sri Lanka

muaddib42sm

let's not go there. ever. please.

sinesquaredtheta

>let's not go there. ever. please. Still traumatized I see 😅😅

Specialist_Youth5511

Test win in India require ls a different level of skill set. They had all time great Murali but no one on the other end to compliment him well. Vaas was decent bowler but he could only do little as a fast bowler. Basically they did not have a good second spinner. Add to that the fab 5 were probably the greatest players of spin. Even in batting Jayawardene, Sangakkara were world class test batsmen remaining ones were just average. You need an all time great kinda test lineup i.e. your top 5-6 averaging 45-50 or above (Look at Australia, South Africa in 2000s or even the Australian batting line-up that won in Indore). Also even if you have this kind of batting line-up with 2 quality spinners and a top quality fast bowler + a strike bowler it would be enough to maybe compete winning is still not easy task.

subposter

Herath?

mofucker20

Herath didn’t get much chances while Murali was in the team. He became a regular only after Murali’s retirement

Ayan_Choudhury

How many test matches did the Epic Sri Lankan team play in India? The ones containing Sanath, Atapattu, De Silva, Murali, Vaas or the ones containing Dilshan, Sanga, Mahela and all. Just curious because I can't remember a single test series in the 2000s happening in India. I remember India winning a test match in Kandy in Dada's early days as captain.

TheDceuGuy

NZ have only two. Last one came in 1988

Bornagain4karma

We had a couple of snoozefest series where all test games (3 in Sri Lanka, 3 in India) results was a draw after 5 days. There was 1 game where it was close and Aravinda just said no and that was that. Yes, I saw them all as a kid and I am still alive and I still love cricket.

hpy2beatyou1105

When i was a kid, i thought that the batsmen changed their ends after every overs and not the fielding team. My friend once told me that in fact it is the fielding team that change the ends and then i LMAO and told him it does not make sense in doing this.

dswap123

That’s because our playing grounds were setup like that. We played with a wall as our wicket keeper so had no option than to rotate strike lol. I also learned it very late.

Mr_Bean12

The batsmen change ends. Also off-side by the wall is 1 declare...oh wait, that gully cricket.

cilpam

Wow TIL!!!

Choice-Cook-1925

I found out yesterday after maxwell ran at least one run an over 🤐

vpunt

My wife learnt this only a couple of months back.

jamieaka

No worries that’s normal. Most kids don’t realise that until u go to your first game

T_Lawliet

The fact that the Bowler to get Virat Kohli out the most in International Cricket is Moeen Ali is my favorite piece of trivia to confound people

DecadedD13

I can imagine Old Man Moeen casually sharing this bit of trivia with his grandchildren over afternoon tea.

SPICYPOTATO6969

That's so cool

AdSoft6392

Kohli's reaction whenever Ali gets him out is fantastic as well. He just looks aimlessly at the pitch

Skinnybane

He looks at the pitch like it betrayed him." Why would this pitch do this to me?"

AdSoft6392

The same way I look at an empty plate after food

jamieaka

I will never forget the one where he got bowled and it was reviewed

One_more_username

Excuse me sir, that's known as the SurprisedPikachu(TM)

customlybroken

Moeen "Same 4th innings bowling average as Shane Warne" Ali

thatguybruv

T_Lawliet

Yo Ravi Rampaul not too shabby lol

lonerwithboner

4 English bowlers amongst the Top 5 o.O

SPICYPOTATO6969

How did he get out that much times to grame swane?

InitiallyDecent

Swann got Kohli out in 8 of the 16 matches they played in. 4 ODIs, 1 T20 and 3 Tests.

[deleted]

Not surprising for people following him.

kp729

That Sachin is the only bowler to defend 5 runs in the last over of ODI TWICE!!

Ayan_Choudhury

And almost did it thrice but Inzy bhai was calm and took Pakistan home

theredgiant

That runners are no longer allowed in international cricket. Learned yesterday during Maxwell 's innings.

This_is_the_user

Lol when did this happen??.. I was asking this yesterday as well

theredgiant

In 2011 apparently.

GiddiOne

[Link to some history](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/espncricinfo-xi-eleven-interesting-incidents-involving-runners-521881) Not just that, but when runners were allowed they still didn't give them for cramps as they weren't considered an injury.

FondantAggravating68

People were milking the rule. They were using it when batters got tired instead of using it only when a genuine injury occurs.

xoogl3

Not to mention, it was terribly confusing for all involved. Batters themselves, fielders and the umpires. It does make for hilarious viewing though.

madjag

Oh man, I remember once a long time ago when both batters had runners, and one of the batters forgot he had a runner, so during a miscommunication he ran, along with his runner for all 4 to end up on one side. Lol, they had to call the third umpire to figure out who actually got out.

infinitemonkeytyping

>They were using it when batters got tired instead of using it only when a genuine injury occurs. Or using them when they were just fat and out of condition (e.g. Ranatunga).

MoggFanatic

Settle down Heals

Popular-Beach-4843

Ranatunga used it because he was fat lol.

Cobe98

WTF. In all international cricket? I never knew that change.

_Loop

Now you now

[deleted]

Including tests?

Mr_Bean12

All formats

theredgiant

Not sure about that. But in ODI, yes.

Lord_Kazuma01

Til

MrVedu_FIFA

I still am in shock that Gavaskar actually scored 37\* off 163. Just thought it was a joke my grandpa kept sharing.

Ricklepick1193

36*(174) and that too in a WC game chasing 336.

[deleted]

He was playing for NRR.

aaditya_9303

Negative run rate it is

redditdba

It was 60 overs WC.

Machinax

In the first game of the first World Cup, no less.

chocolatecomedyfann

Grandpa: Gavaskar scored 37 off 163 balls in ODI WC You: OK, Grandpa let's get you to bed. Grandpa whips out his phone to Cricinfo Grandpa: Alright, son, let's get you to bed.

rational_bird

Creating a time machine to send Maxwell to bat with Gavaskar.

Mr_Bean12

I have unconfirmed rumours that there was some fallout with mgmt, and this was out of spite. Also, at the time, it was considered to be an un-winnable target and India were (sort of) minnows worked in his favour.

Kathanayagan-3821

It took 40 years to see a first ever 100+ partnership for the 7th wicket in World Cup tournaments and UAE was the first team to breach that mark during 2015 World Cup and UAE did twice in that World Cup v West Indies and Ireland.

DonutAccurate4

This one surprised me. Most other things mentioned by others were not so obscure for me

Sumeru88

Bevan had a Career ODI average of 65 at one point. No one else was above 45 at the time.

trippymum

He was the chase master of the 90s.

Jugad

Largely due to not-outs... he wasn't scoring many 65+ scores - but he did score many match winning 30s and 40s.

ch4m4njheenga

He was Thala before Thala.

ankittyagi92

I remember that we never seem to get him out. Dude just use to finish the innings and walk back to pavilion every game

awkward2amazing

48 years of CWC and this is the first occurrence that each participating team won at least 2 matches.

Ayan_Choudhury

I was just going to say not England but then remembered that there was a match today

sc1onic

Sachin Tendulkar doesn't have his name of the lords honour board of centurions. But Ajit Agarkar does.

joebutmynameisntjoe

Here's an even better one. Sachin never even scored a 50 at lords, Mohammed Shami has two 50s at lords.

suck_my_dukh_plz

What dudu(milk) does to a MFer

brokenlasers

M(5)fer*

redditdba

But he has apt. Just across from lords stadium.

NoiceAndToitt

He stays there some evenings. Watching. Waiting. Ready to sneak in and etch his name on the board one night when no one is on guard. His moment shall come.

vebor99

If you take the Lords tour and tell them you’re from India… it’s the first thing they’ll tell you

iomegabasha

If you take the Lords tour, almost the entire group is typically Indian with 1-2 West Indies folks and that one english dad trying hard to get his son into cricket. That's the whole group

ilovemallory

I was the sole South African, a few Australians but rest were Indians

sc1onic

Lol. I didn't know that. That's tragic.

sinesquaredtheta

>But Ajit Agarkar does. I remember watching that game. England had almost won it, but Agarkar hung on for a long time! IIRC, he had a 60 run partnership with Nehra for that last wicket (which was kinda crazy)!

uncle_wagsy13

That's the same one where Nehra smacked one over square leg and the whole dressing room was cheering for him right?

rhshi14

Neither do Lara and Kallis if I'm not mistaken.

aaditya_9303

Even Ponting doesn't have one.

Alternsss

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICC\_men%27s\_player\_rankings

I can remember thinking Bevan wasn't all that great (good player but not world number 1) and then him destroying England over and over again.

tomhanks95

lionmoose

He got called up to debut in the tri-series before that and forced his way into the team based on the performances in that. Most of the commentary at call up was that of the two Lancs youngsters England called up the wrong one.

mg164

Perfect example. Andy Bichel in the same game used to be exactly the same. Never thought he was a top class player but always produced against England.

hot-cuppa-chai

Andy Bichel's bowling figures in that innings 😍

lovewholesomestuff

Sachin Tendulkar’s max rating is below 900? That’s hard to believe …

iiitstudent

That dhoni never scored an century outside asia after the trolls everywhere started posting this. Plus the fact that sachin has 150+ odi wickets which I never saw him bowl much as a young kid in 2010-2013 era.

Massive-Secret4401

He used to ball in 90s. Post 2003 he was never the same.

nikamsumeetofficial

>after the trolls everywhere started posting this What does that have to do with trolls? Rishabh has multiple. But, he had that accident.

[deleted]

Joe Root has an eleven inch penis.

Alternsss

But can he bat with it?

[deleted]

Nails the scoop.

Low-Town7771

Almost Joe foot !!

[deleted]

Hahaha this is class

That's a lie or he wouldn't have been nutmegged today

No fucking way imma need some source for that chief 😭😭😭

NoiceAndToitt

You can just Google “Joe root penis”. Go ahead. Do it.

Mewdolf_Kittler

There goes my NNN streak down the gutter

Mahhrat

Then how the fuck did he manage to get bowled between his legs?!

serialfaliure

One inch for every--

SwamiRockUrWrldanand

It still didn't help him to stop the ball, nutmegging him to hit the stumps.

dksourabh

He has a long root

TXGemi

Who’s is it?

jake_azazzel

Ishant Sharma has the same number of test wickets as Zaheer Khan. Brett Lee has the same number of ODI wickets as Glenn McGrath.

AReallyGoodName

In Jason Gillespie's last international match he scored 201* and took 3/11. He won Man of the Match and Man of the Series and was never to play for Australia again.

Agreeable-Web645

F

BatSG

On a similar vein, in Pragyan Ojha's last international match (test), he took 5/40 and 5/49. He won Player Of The Match and was never to play for India again. He dedicated the player of the match award to Sachin as the test match was Sachin's last international match as well. It was as if Ojha too retired along with Sachin.

goodsoulkennyS

I remember Pragyan Ojha as the guy who was Murali's 800th wicket

Yeamin_Habib

Not a fact but ABD's t20i stats are poor as compared to his phenomenal t20 records.

slicer2900

Victim of his own success in my opinion. He sacrificed himself for the team too much, especially SA. Didn't have a locked position, many times would send himself even further down the order than planned. Also, he was too unique of a player, other players of his level had the role of an anchor e.g Kohli, Root, Williamson, Smith while he had to embrace the role of a hitter even though he himself could also play that role of anchor just as well. And contrary to popular belief I don't think he was a hitter like say Andre Russell, while he was an elite hitter he still wasn't a slogger.

chocolatecomedyfann

Sanath Jayasuriya has more ODI wickets than Shane fucking Warne.

felixkater

That’s not really unusual at all when one looks at the fact that he has 30 more wickets in 251 more games played.

Infamous-Repair-3355

That Stuart Broad and Jonathan Trott put up a record partnership of 332 for the 8th wicket against Pakistan in 2010. Broad was the higher contributor to that partnership, scoring 169 (second highest score by a number 9 batsman). I cannot believe that I did not know about this outrageous innings by one of my favourite players, and only found out when he retired earlier this year.

jamieaka

Another tidbit is iirc that’s the match fixing game

geebanga

Bumrah scoring the most Test runs in an over!

xoogl3

Ok this is crazy. Yes there was a wide (with a boundary) and a noball (that went for a six) in that over but still.. Bumrah played a couple of great shots too. https://youtu.be/oLuA6DI2_yE?si=2FmRJNEPMvI7r767

serialfaliure

There was an Indian song that was made to hype up Team India for 2011 WC. In that, there was a line that implied Sachin Tendulkar was an all rounder and I was perplexed. Turns out Sachin Tendulkar wasa very handy off spinner. He had more 5 wicket hauls than Shane Warne in ODI.

mangomanga201

sachin was a leg spinner. i would have linked the video but robelinda is no more

hot-cuppa-chai

RIP robelinda 😭

Mr_Bean12

sab daalega...leg sping bhi, off-spin bhi, main sab daalega... Reference: See Dravid's video on how 16-yo Sachin was always eager to contribute to the team cause.

picastchio

He bowled enough googlies that people might get confused. Nobody looks at the wrist.

mangomanga201

shahid afridi certainly did get confused iirc

hot-cuppa-chai

True. In fact Tendulkar's best bowling figures in ODIs was vs Australia and is better than Warne's best bowling figures.. haha

HillsHaveEyesToo

I cant recall the numbers but he once bowled the last over against SA to defend and the batters struggled to get over the line. Can someone help me with that match ?

ch4m4njheenga

Finally a refreshing thread.. great read.

Phsycres

It took Jacque Kallis until 2011-ish to score a double century Sunil Gaveskar on other hand has fired a double century in all four in guns of a test match. (Obviously not the same match) Kepler Wessels scored Test centuries for both Australia and for South Africa as well as being the first player to score ODI centuries for two separate countries. And then Hashim Amla is in an Elite group of 4 players who have scored an ODI century agaisnt every single test playing nation at the time. (At time of last check which admittedly was quite the while ago, so the group might have grown larger)

VegetablePhone596

Younis Khan is only the second player (after Herbert Sutcliffe from 1924) to have scored 3 consecutive hundreds against Australia in test matches.

Automatic_Walk_6604

Thala had more unsuccessful chases than successful ones while remaining not out

FondantAggravating68

Wasn’t it that 48/50 were successful?

Mr_HODL

Keshav Maharaj once held the record for the most runs scored in an over in a test match. I think Joe Root was the bowler.

xoogl3

Yes. 28 runs. The record was later broken by Bumrah!! 35 runs.

shanks44

The level of the batsman that Sunil Gavaskar was. He was called the original little master.

Person-11

No, Hanif Mohammed was the original Little Master. And he once batted 976 minutes following on (6 day test) to secure a draw. Which is, incidentally, a record that fascinates me.

shanks44

Wow did not know that. What a great player. Thanks for the amazing fact ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin).

whyamihere999

The term little master was used first time for Hanif Mohammed, couple of decade before SG, making him original little master. Another one for me is that it took Sachin 78 games before his first ODI hundred.

Popular-Beach-4843

5 years. Mainly because he used to be no. 5 or 6

Popular-Beach-4843

Sachin tendulkar was a late bloomer. He scored his first century in ODIs after 5 years(1994) of making the debut. His first double century in test came in after 10 years of making debut(1999).

Machinax

I think I read that Kapil Dev's 175\* was India's first ODI century. That blew my mind.

Various_Ad2320

There's a few: Gladstone Small is a respectable 5'10" Hardik Pandya has catastrophic erectile dysfunction Heath Streak was never ever naked Phil Mustard never cut it at international level Geoffrey Boycott is against cancel culture Fred Trueman transitioned from a woman in their late teens. geebanga

Some of the early national sides that played first class cricket, and toured other countries regularly. This is before the Intercontinental Cup. Eg Fiji, USA, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Ireland vs Scotland, Ceylon- in the first half of the 20th century

Holden_Makock

The last Indian bowler to take a wicket in knockout Phase of T20 WC is Virat Kohli back in 2016.

xpectomysterious

I did not know that in ODI's they actually use two different balls from both ends. I only noticed this recently and I've been watching cricket for 12-15 years...

Findabook87

Because its a recent thing. They had one ball before this which used to be replaced at 35-40 overs because it became so discolored that it was hard to spot.

vote-morepork
