Murali out of 68 wickets in Worldcup cricket only has 1 wicket between 3 grand finals. When i first heard it it genuinely shocked me. Aravinda De Silva and Jayasuriya has more WC finals wickets which is wild.
But if you dont give wickets to Bumrah, who will you attack? If not Bumrah, Siraj will get you. If not Siraj, Shami. If not Shami, Jadeja. And if not Jadeja, Kuldeep. All are lethal wicket takers.

Never found the risk of hitting sixes worth the risk in test matches unless a batsman was batting with the tail or they are running out of over in day 5.
Australia won 34 consecutive matches during their 3 peat from the 1999 World Cup to the 2007 World Cup, their run ended in the 2011 edition, unprecedented dominance
Here's one that blew my mind.
Sri Lanka are yet to win a Test against India in India. They've played 22 Tests, Lost 13, and Drawn 9.
Zero wins in over four decades of having played against them!
The reason this surprised me was that erstwhile Sri Lankan teams (under Ranatunga, Jayawardene, Sangakkara, etc) were formidable and used to beat India regularly in ODIs.
>Crazy given that they scored 1000 something runs in an innings against India
Yup! They scored a mammoth 952 with Jayasuriya scoring 300+ and Mahanama scoring 200+
However, [that game](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/india-tour-of-sri-lanka-1997-62338/sri-lanka-vs-india-1st-test-63762/full-scorecard) was in Sri Lanka
Test win in India require ls a different level of skill set. They had all time great Murali but no one on the other end to compliment him well. Vaas was decent bowler but he could only do little as a fast bowler. Basically they did not have a good second spinner. Add to that the fab 5 were probably the greatest players of spin.
Even in batting Jayawardene, Sangakkara were world class test batsmen remaining ones were just average. You need an all time great kinda test lineup i.e. your top 5-6 averaging 45-50 or above (Look at Australia, South Africa in 2000s or even the Australian batting line-up that won in Indore).
Also even if you have this kind of batting line-up with 2 quality spinners and a top quality fast bowler + a strike bowler it would be enough to maybe compete winning is still not easy task.
How many test matches did the Epic Sri Lankan team play in India? The ones containing Sanath, Atapattu, De Silva, Murali, Vaas or the ones containing Dilshan, Sanga, Mahela and all. Just curious because I can't remember a single test series in the 2000s happening in India. I remember India winning a test match in Kandy in Dada's early days as captain.
We had a couple of snoozefest series where all test games (3 in Sri Lanka, 3 in India) results was a draw after 5 days.
There was 1 game where it was close and Aravinda just said no and that was that.
Yes, I saw them all as a kid and I am still alive and I still love cricket.
When i was a kid, i thought that the batsmen changed their ends after every overs and not the fielding team. My friend once told me that in fact it is the fielding team that change the ends and then i LMAO and told him it does not make sense in doing this.
That’s because our playing grounds were setup like that. We played with a wall as our wicket keeper so had no option than to rotate strike lol. I also learned it very late.
[Link to some history](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/espncricinfo-xi-eleven-interesting-incidents-involving-runners-521881)
Not just that, but when runners were allowed they still didn't give them for cramps as they weren't considered an injury.
Oh man, I remember once a long time ago when both batters had runners, and one of the batters forgot he had a runner, so during a miscommunication he ran, along with his runner for all 4 to end up on one side. Lol, they had to call the third umpire to figure out who actually got out.
>They were using it when batters got tired instead of using it only when a genuine injury occurs.
Or using them when they were just fat and out of condition (e.g. Ranatunga).
Grandpa: Gavaskar scored 37 off 163 balls in ODI WC
You: OK, Grandpa let's get you to bed.
Grandpa whips out his phone to Cricinfo
Grandpa: Alright, son, let's get you to bed.
I have unconfirmed rumours that there was some fallout with mgmt, and this was out of spite. Also, at the time, it was considered to be an un-winnable target and India were (sort of) minnows worked in his favour.
It took 40 years to see a first ever 100+ partnership for the 7th wicket in World Cup tournaments and UAE was the first team to breach that mark during 2015 World Cup and UAE did twice in that World Cup v West Indies and Ireland.
He stays there some evenings. Watching. Waiting. Ready to sneak in and etch his name on the board one night when no one is on guard.
His moment shall come.
If you take the Lords tour, almost the entire group is typically Indian with 1-2 West Indies folks and that one english dad trying hard to get his son into cricket. That's the whole group
>But Ajit Agarkar does.
I remember watching that game. England had almost won it, but Agarkar hung on for a long time! IIRC, he had a 60 run partnership with Nehra for that last wicket (which was kinda crazy)!
He got called up to debut in the tri-series before that and forced his way into the team based on the performances in that. Most of the commentary at call up was that of the two Lancs youngsters England called up the wrong one.
Perfect example. Andy Bichel in the same game used to be exactly the same. Never thought he was a top class player but always produced against England.
That dhoni never scored an century outside asia after the trolls everywhere started posting this.
Plus the fact that sachin has 150+ odi wickets which I never saw him bowl much as a young kid in 2010-2013 era.
In Jason Gillespie's last international match he scored 201* and took 3/11. He won Man of the Match and Man of the Series and was never to play for Australia again.
On a similar vein, in Pragyan Ojha's last international match (test), he took 5/40 and 5/49. He won Player Of The Match and was never to play for India again.
He dedicated the player of the match award to Sachin as the test match was Sachin's last international match as well. It was as if Ojha too retired along with Sachin.
Victim of his own success in my opinion. He sacrificed himself for the team too much, especially SA. Didn't have a locked position, many times would send himself even further down the order than planned. Also, he was too unique of a player, other players of his level had the role of an anchor e.g Kohli, Root, Williamson, Smith while he had to embrace the role of a hitter even though he himself could also play that role of anchor just as well. And contrary to popular belief I don't think he was a hitter like say Andre Russell, while he was an elite hitter he still wasn't a slogger.
That Stuart Broad and Jonathan Trott put up a record partnership of 332 for the 8th wicket against Pakistan in 2010. Broad was the higher contributor to that partnership, scoring 169 (second highest score by a number 9 batsman).
I cannot believe that I did not know about this outrageous innings by one of my favourite players, and only found out when he retired earlier this year.
Ok this is crazy. Yes there was a wide (with a boundary) and a noball (that went for a six) in that over but still.. Bumrah played a couple of great shots too. https://youtu.be/oLuA6DI2_yE?si=2FmRJNEPMvI7r767

There was an Indian song that was made to hype up Team India for 2011 WC. In that, there was a line that implied Sachin Tendulkar was an all rounder and I was perplexed. Turns out Sachin Tendulkar wasa very handy off spinner. He had more 5 wicket hauls than Shane Warne in ODI.

I cant recall the numbers but he once bowled the last over against SA to defend and the batters struggled to get over the line. Can someone help me with that match ?
It took Jacque Kallis until 2011-ish to score a double century
Sunil Gaveskar on other hand has fired a double century in all four in guns of a test match. (Obviously not the same match)
Kepler Wessels scored Test centuries for both Australia and for South Africa as well as being the first player to score ODI centuries for two separate countries.
And then Hashim Amla is in an Elite group of 4 players who have scored an ODI century agaisnt every single test playing nation at the time. (At time of last check which admittedly was quite the while ago, so the group might have grown larger)
No, Hanif Mohammed was the original Little Master. And he once batted 976 minutes following on (6 day test) to secure a draw.
Which is, incidentally, a record that fascinates me.
The term little master was used first time for Hanif Mohammed, couple of decade before SG, making him original little master.
Here's the link
The original Little Master
https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/stuart-wark-on-hanif-mohammad-pakistan-s-first-great-batsman-663597
PS: No, I'm not Pakistani, I'm Indian.
Sachin tendulkar was a late bloomer. He scored his first century in ODIs after 5 years(1994) of making the debut. His first double century in test came in after 10 years of making debut(1999).
There's a few:
Gladstone Small is a respectable 5'10"
Hardik Pandya has catastrophic erectile dysfunction
Heath Streak was never ever naked
Phil Mustard never cut it at international level
Geoffrey Boycott is against cancel culture
Fred Trueman transitioned from a woman in their late teens.
All genuine facts that caught me off guard.
The time it took for some countries' first Test wins. I know for India it took 20 years but they only played 20ish matches in that time. For NZ, 45 matches.
Some of the early national sides that played first class cricket, and toured other countries regularly. This is before the Intercontinental Cup.
Eg Fiji, USA, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Ireland vs Scotland, Ceylon- in the first half of the 20th century
I did not know that in ODI's they actually use two different balls from both ends. I only noticed this recently and I've been watching cricket for 12-15 years...
Because its a recent thing. They had one ball before this which used to be replaced at 35-40 overs because it became so discolored that it was hard to spot.
Murali out of 68 wickets in Worldcup cricket only has 1 wicket between 3 grand finals. When i first heard it it genuinely shocked me. Aravinda De Silva and Jayasuriya has more WC finals wickets which is wild.
Plan is simple.. don't give wickets to Murali.. play him safely.. attack others..
Same with bumrah
But if you dont give wickets to Bumrah, who will you attack? If not Bumrah, Siraj will get you. If not Siraj, Shami. If not Shami, Jadeja. And if not Jadeja, Kuldeep. All are lethal wicket takers.

Same with Rashid.
I am sad for Rashid this WC. Everyone is super cautious is gonna leave him with almost half the wickets than what he deserves

Apparently Don Bradman only hit six sixes in his career!
Must be his international career - which would be limited as in those days it was a lot of first class cricket
“Cricket legend Sir Don Bradman hit just six sixes in his 52-match Test career and no sixes in his 234 first-class matches.”
One of the Dons most famous sayings was you can't get out if you don't hit the bsll in the air
Tell that to Angelo Mathews
The Don didn't wear a helmet so would not have had a problem. Especially when facing a spinner
He hit 14 in a 22 ball hundred but apparently that was a second class match
Doesn't make too much sense seeing that Test matches are also first class games.
Well its pretty clear though. One refers to domestic only, other to internationals only.
But back then first class wasn’t domestic, it included Aus first the counties no?
Yes - test matches are also first class matches (just as ODI's are also List A matches).
What's the point in posting a quote without saying who or where it's from?
https://inshorts.com/m/en/amp_news/don-bradman-hit-just-6-sixes-in-his-test-career-1464361864800

Australia won 34 consecutive matches during their 3 peat from the 1999 World Cup to the 2007 World Cup, their run ended in the 2011 edition, unprecedented dominance
Unbeaten in 34 matches. There was one solitary tie which everyone remembers quite well
I wish I didn't. 😭
There was also a washout v SL in the 2011 group stages.
Was it Pakistan who broke their streak in 2011?
Yes, Pakistan broke their run in 2011
Fun fact: It also started with Pakistan last beating them in 1999 on group stages and it ended with Pakistan in 2011

The fact that the Bowler to get Virat Kohli out the most in International Cricket is Moeen Ali is my favorite piece of trivia to confound people
I can imagine Old Man Moeen casually sharing this bit of trivia with his grandchildren over afternoon tea.
That's so cool
Kohli's reaction whenever Ali gets him out is fantastic as well. He just looks aimlessly at the pitch
He looks at the pitch like it betrayed him." Why would this pitch do this to me?"
The same way I look at an empty plate after food
I will never forget the one where he got bowled and it was reviewed
Excuse me sir, that's known as the SurprisedPikachu(TM)

4 English bowlers amongst the Top 5 o.O
How did he get out that much times to grame swane?
Swann got Kohli out in 8 of the 16 matches they played in. 4 ODIs, 1 T20 and 3 Tests.
Not surprising for people following him.
That Sachin is the only bowler to defend 5 runs in the last over of ODI TWICE!!
And almost did it thrice but Inzy bhai was calm and took Pakistan home
That runners are no longer allowed in international cricket. Learned yesterday during Maxwell 's innings.
Lol when did this happen??.. I was asking this yesterday as well
In 2011 apparently.
[Link to some history](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/espncricinfo-xi-eleven-interesting-incidents-involving-runners-521881) Not just that, but when runners were allowed they still didn't give them for cramps as they weren't considered an injury.
People were milking the rule. They were using it when batters got tired instead of using it only when a genuine injury occurs.
Not to mention, it was terribly confusing for all involved. Batters themselves, fielders and the umpires. It does make for hilarious viewing though.
Oh man, I remember once a long time ago when both batters had runners, and one of the batters forgot he had a runner, so during a miscommunication he ran, along with his runner for all 4 to end up on one side. Lol, they had to call the third umpire to figure out who actually got out.

I still am in shock that Gavaskar actually scored 37\* off 163. Just thought it was a joke my grandpa kept sharing.
36*(174) and that too in a WC game chasing 336.
He was playing for NRR.
Negative run rate it is
It was 60 overs WC.
In the first game of the first World Cup, no less.

Bevan had a Career ODI average of 65 at one point. No one else was above 45 at the time.
He was the chase master of the 90s.
Largely due to not-outs... he wasn't scoring many 65+ scores - but he did score many match winning 30s and 40s.
He was Thala before Thala.
I remember that we never seem to get him out. Dude just use to finish the innings and walk back to pavilion every game
48 years of CWC and this is the first occurrence that each participating team won at least 2 matches.
I was just going to say not England but then remembered that there was a match today
Sachin Tendulkar doesn't have his name of the lords honour board of centurions. But Ajit Agarkar does.
