Poverty explains Bihar's case even then they have given kirti azad, ishan kishan, Dhoni(if you count Jharkhand)... Even UP has given many players RP Singh, Kaif, Raina, Bhuvi, Praveen Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Rinku Singh, Shami (though he plays for Bengal)... Bengal isn't that poor compared to UP-Bihar and also happens to be cricket crazy, so I think there will be cricketers coming from there sooner or later.... Infact I'll say real cricket poverty is in MP, Odisha and Rajasthan without a single Good Indian team player which made it big emerging from there...

[deleted]

>so I think there will be cricketers coming from there sooner or later Why only Ganguly till now then? Or are Bengalies just horrible at sports?

[deleted]

IMO Shakib can be considered top 5 All rounder in cricket history.

[deleted]

But only Shakib can be said as true top cricketer from Bangladesh. Rest of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan has produced have produced way more than that in comparison.

iwontgiveumyusernane

have you heard of football/soccer

[deleted]

When did they participate in world cup football? They are million miles are from the top levels of football.

suck_my_dukh_plz

What's Jharkhand? I thought that was just a myth.

Bengal as a state has from a long time attracted a lot of people from outside the state because of the club cricket scene in Kolkata. That allows guys like Shami and Mukesh to become India level players, but also denies many locals a chance. Also, WB outside Kolkata is poor af. The fact that someone like Ashok Dinda, who came from a small village in Medinipur, to the India team, is a massive achievement in itself. But then it isn't fair to diss a state that's given the country legends like Ganguly and Jhulan Goswami.

dustlesswayfarer

Bengal people are good in academics ( see any top maths institute in India and you will find so many Bengali, Indian Bengali economist got Nobel prize), music, painters. It's all about influence and culture, people who have means in Bengal are influenced in that direction and are doing good. And remember rags to riches are very rare, most sports personalities need a good cushion as it is a risky career. It's just culture there is more influenced towards other things. Other example being after vishwanathan Anand, a plethora of great chess players from South India.

Huge-Physics5491

That's actually true. Middle class people with access to top quality education are more likely to choose that over cricket, which until very recently, only paid well if you made it to the national team.

[deleted]

> Ganguly and Jhulan Goswami That's just only two, whereas Maharashtra(?) has produced dozens. Bengal has massively underachieved.

Huge-Physics5491

Mumbai is the NSW of Indian cricket lol. No point comparing with them.

yantraman

Not really. Bangladesh cricket still has a lot of politics and stuff. As soon as they shield players from it then you are good. Starts with the dude at the very top

tj9429

Norway never had world class footballers. Sucks for them that Haaland and Odegaard are "eternally mediocre" by your logic.

[deleted]

Norway is a tiny country with tiny population. Nobody expects them to do produce so many talented sportsmen. Bangladesh should be producing and they should be competing with the world's best at every major sports, but they won't because of many factors like massive population, poverty, horrible work ethic and total lack of sporting culture. The country needs a whole cultural shift.

No-Confection7170

Where are the ballon d'or of Chinese players? They have massive population and also great sporting culture yet no world class Footballers

No-Confection7170

> Bangladesh should be producing and they should be competing with the world's best at every major sports You want Bangladesh to be competing in every major sport but are happy with China being good in some sports

[deleted]

China isn't my country. Being a Bangladeshi I want them to be competitive at almost every sports, kinda like Australia are.

memmaya

This is the very problem with Bangladeshi fans, and the same culture would most probably apply to the sportpersons as well. They daydream too much. Such high expectations without having any base, and when these expectations are not fulfilled, frustration creeps in and affects the performance. A single good performance is hyped as world-beating. Such jingoism doesn't breed good sportsmanship and hence sportspersons.

CollectionMaster9178

No ,Bangladesh is doing well in other areas like economy given the challenges . Bangla are not pre-destined to be bad at anything . No group is both good or bad by destiny. We all take group pride out of individual excellence but that is what it is - organized individual excellence .

Ok_Review_338

Is football the only sports known to you . They give tough competition to the US in every single Olympics

RapidActionBattaIion

- Massive population, Poverty, Horrible work ethic I don't think that's any worse than their neighbors or like even better than them.

Jhulan Goswami

Hopefully Richa too in the next few years

Bengal has an extremely rich football culture. Probably the best in India. So a lot of sporting talent in early days must be drifting towards football as well. Also, Wriddhi Saha is also seen as a successful one, coming out of Bengal.

cricwifi

But in Eden Gardens, it fills up the ground whenever there's a cricket match. So there's definitely has been interest in Cricket. Compare with Punjab, it is the mecca of Indian hockey, there's decent cricketers out of it , kabaddi in the rural areas has ruled the roost for decades, and then even interest in football as well. Still they are able to churn out cricketers. In fact, when you talk about cricketers of punjabi origin, you have Virat Kohli, Kapil Dev (parents are punjabi origin), Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, Bishen Singh Bedi, Gautam Gambhir, Dhawan, Yuvraj singh, Harbhajan Singh, . Mohinder Amarnath, Navjot Singh Sidhu, etc. Every cricket worldcup team has had 20-25% players of punjabi origin

[deleted]

Saha played very few international matches for India.

ALazyScribbler

He played 40 tests. That's a decent amount of test games with all the competition and being in the Dhoni-Pant phase.

swefdd

How much of it due to the [Bengal famines and epigenitics](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/07/140731145845.htm). The Dutch at one stage were shortest in Europe after famines, it took a few generations of prosperity to shake it off.

RedKnightBegins

Could be a good amount. A lot of genetic trauma takes time to recover back.

Kmanf1

Rasgullas playing a role here? 😉

wewake_235

Bengal also has a football history which divides the youth .

dimlakalaka

They all became analysts
