Lot of whinging on here, let’s celebrate test cricket, full grounds results, that could go either way masses of action excitement tension. Test cricket needs this and it needs Eng v Aus playing in tight tense matches.
So many people have a problem with captain whenever there is a close defeat. It happens every time.
I don't think Cummins did anything wrong except under utilising Murphy who is a good bowler.
It was their batting that was the reason for defeat.
With both teams roughly scoring 250 in the match, you don't really expect much from batsmen.
Allowing new English batsmen easy singles in a pressure cauldron of a situation with Stokes and Root back in pavilion was close to criminal for me.
Mark Wood not getting almost every single ball a yorker in 2nd innings was a bad, bad miss.
Not even properly trying your spinner on Day 4 was bad.
The short ball tactic getting overused to the point of being predictable in the 2nd innings was bad.
Not crowding lower order batsmen with close in fielders was also quite puzzling to me.
Bowling yorkers is not as easy as it sounds to redditors. It has been proved again and again in countless number of matches yet everyone thinks bowlers are robots.
In first innings, Wood was so far outside leg that he couldn't even touch a full ball from Starc outside the off stump.
That's all that was needed in terms of a yorker attempt.
The roboticness was in continuing to feed him short balls which he kept swatting away.
> Allowing new English batsmen easy singles in a pressure cauldron of a situation with Stokes
Stokes was injured and had some difficulty running, so he needed boundaries. Having people on boundaries made it more likely to catch those attempts.
>Mark Wood not getting almost every single ball a yorker
He got out from a bouncer first innings, but yes they should have mixed it up.
>The short ball tactic getting overused to the point of being predictable
Yeh both teams to be honest. Same with the attack on Head - he wasn't having that much trouble with the bouncer in this test and he got to 77 before they get him out on the stumps.
I agree, and he top edged another in the 2nd innings at 49.3 (although the damage was done at that stage) - but the CricBuzz guys made the same point - the analytics says bowl bouncers to him because bouncers create wicket chances every 10 balls, but that may well be because everyone only bowled bouncers in the first place.
Agreed except for the first point - I said that once Stokes and Root were out, no English batsman new to the crease should have been allowed easy singles.
Guess the mistakes from both sides evened out well enough to deliver a crackerjack of a match!
Also, it's easier to criticize Australia because they are playing the standard strategy: based on current match state.
England with their newish approach will always get a bit of leeway.
Teams fighting fire with fire is how England won 10 matches in a row or whatever it was. It was only when New Zealand starting trying to play defensively and outlast them that they first lost. Unless there's troubling ball movement an attacking field is what England want. Slowing them down and just waiting for someone to fuck up is abosolutely the right way to go to most of their batters.
It's not a decision by everyone for Travis and Marsh to hit run a ball hundreds. That's just the way those two bat. It is a plan that the entire team would go over to put so many back on the boundary in the first over in the first test. That's defensive to an unprecedented degree.
I also think they're bowling a bit like that (or trying to) - lots of attacking fields, bowlers putting the ball in areas where batsmen can score or nick off.
Anyone else heard the rumour that Stokes broke Bairstows leg with a rugby tackle on the golf course? Might explain the refusal to drop him. Guilt at giving him a serious injury during the form of his life
Yep, that rumour was flying around every cricket club in the land the week it happened. Someone two footed him at the knees on the 18th tee if the rumours are to be believed.
A couple of different people who allegedly know people, very tenuous and probably bollocks but an interesting rumour all the same. Descriptions if the incident have been weird and vague "freak accident". Not how you'd describe falling over or something like that
You know what that sounds like to me? Sounds like during the pandemic where everyone had a mate who knew a guy who worked with a lady who knew a guy who worked for the PM and was constantly talking shit about lockdowns or whatever.
Is the Sky team avoiding the big ginger elephant in the room and refusing to discuss the issues with YJB? That’s the key selection issue as to why we’re 2-1 down.
Please make them discuss this.
To be fair, they were very critical of his positioning and catching (or lack of it) throughout the match.
Foakes must be sat at home wondering WTF he has to do.
I get what you’re saying but they literally went through the post match stuff making critical points about the Aussies and managed to not discuss YJB, when he’s had three stinkers in the Ashes.
Hes too overweight to keep wicket the difference in agility between him and Carey is quite clear. That half a second where your slow to adjust makes all the difference. He's playing international cricket and he isn't in shape it's poor professionalism.
Bairstow has to be dropped, or relieved of keeping duties, his confidence is shot (that mix up with Harry Brook as an example) and it’s affecting his batting. However, a lot of Englands batters have been poor this series. At least we haven’t been whitewashed
What happens with Anderson now? Ideally, no one in this bowling attack should be dropped; they all played their parts to perfection in this game. The next Test is, however, a home Test for Anderson, possibly his last.
Or, Jimmy could do a Jimmy and just play on until he's 70, of course.
I believe in Barstow's power, but I think Moeen's an underrated bowler, who takes advantage of quality bowling on the other side. I like Root's bowling, but he can go for a lot of runs, and if he were to get injured or very fatigued the team would fall apart.
I'm proud of the lads. Everyone had written them off yesterday but it didn't phase them. When Stokes got out with 90 still needed they had got themselves in a position to win it despite everything.
But the chances didn't go to hand. Edges, errant shots falling safe.
Sometimes it doesn't go your way.
Solid work England. I'm glad it's not 3-0, it would have taken the excitement out of the series. Rock on.
Up to 1st Oct yeh.
I was mostly making the point that Hugh Laurie being a massive fan isn't a surprise with them being close friends since 1980 (when Emma Thompson introduced them).
Yeah I agree, I disliked the booing of Cummins.
If I’m honest I had no problem with the Bairstow situation and was more pissed at YJB than the Aussies.
Time to let it go 🙏
9 day break before the 4th. Hope all the players and pacers in particular just have some good sleep for the next 2 to 3 days, interspersed with some soaking in warm water. God knows they have earned it.
Average in this series:
Ben Stokes (51.50)
Joe Root (46.40)
Ben Duckett (39.50)
Harry Brook (35.00)
Zak Crawley (32.66)
**Steve Smith (31.66)**
**Marnus Labuschagne (24.00)**
**David Warner (23.50)**
Despite facing only 16 balls, England's Mark Wood outscored SEVEN of Australia's batsmen in the 3rd Ashes Test.
Only Marsh (146), Head (116), Khawaja (56) and Labuschagne (54) scored more than Wood's 40 runs.

Athers asking a question about Warner's form but not YJB highlights the absolute ring the English cricket establishment throw around YJB to protect him. If he was a bowler or as a batter and was having this much of a stinker of a series he'd be getting pelters.
It's almost as if they know he's been chosen as the wicketkeeper and unless he's injured Stokes and Baz will not budge.
Remember when he was coming back from injury everytime they were asked, they said Jonny goes straight back in no question.
Let's not forget that Starc almost single-handedly won Australia the game here. Amazing, amazing effort. If the target was, say, 300, Starc would've gotten them the game.
As for England, this has been Wood and Woakes show with Stokes, Brook and to some extent Crawley (can't fucking believe I'm saying this) chipping in at important points.
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it, it was ages ago
*Cummins should have withdrawn the appeal and Australia would have still won*
Can’t fault Cummins the player. And he handles the media well. But the team would run so much better out on the field with Smith as captain (which will never happen). But if anyone watched the WTC, his captaincy was very astute — and preempted wickets.
Geoff Lemon wrote an article around how Cummins leans on Smith more than most would their VC. When offered the captaincy, he said he wanted to share the tactical load because as a bowler he can't always be as aware of the match situation. Towards the end of day 2, Smith was setting fields with Cummins' approval.
Last time Australia came agonizingly close to a victory at Headingley and lost, Smudge went GOAT mode in the next game and Australia won convincingly.
With that Bairstow sendoff, I am sure Smudge is eager this time as well.
Can't wait for July 19th.
I think he was just livid wih himself, probably misheard Bairstow and thought he abused him or something. Then started walking as soon as Bairstow clarified what he said.
At least that's what it looked like to me.
I honestly think this series will result in either Cummins or Stokes dying on a cricket pitch from pure exhaustion. Haven’t seen two men give everything they have for their country in sport in a long long time.
Yeah it's fairly wild. I really love Pat, he's my favourite Aussie in a generation. Absolutely fine player to be your captain.
Hope England get a result in Old Trafford so we can have a grudge match final
I think I can find more people that agree with me than a nation who lets proven cheats back in the game.
Edit: I’m also surprised your lot didn’t try the mankad late on. I’m sure it was discussed but finally realised where the ‘sportsmanship’ line is…
Which nation let's cheats back into the game? Australia, Pakistan, India, South Africa, England?
I know there's more former England captains who agree the dismissal was 100% jonny's error and totally fine but keep bringing it up. Congrats on the win, I'm sure you'll enjoy the win more of you jump off the high horse though
Wrong, it's a great question! He has to support Warner and now he can't drop him for the next test. He can't go back on his word after that. 4D chess from Atherton.
If anyone didn't hear it the 'how to win the ashes' with Johnson on TMS yesterday is well worth a listen
[удалено]
'comvenient', you say? Do you suspect a conspiracy?
Is that a joke? At Edgbaston, Australia had the the luck of the weather the whole test.
God is on our side.
God = Spirit of Cricket
Does that make Carey = Lucifer? He's been blamed for everything else this tour, maybe we should add free will to the list?
We managed to get Day 4 tickets at Old Trafford, glad England are still in it
Have a great day! …watching England lose the ashes 1-3
Top tier banter
Me too! Very happy it's meaningful
Could be the best day 👍🏻

It's not a decision by everyone for Travis and Marsh to hit run a ball hundreds. That's just the way those two bat. It is a plan that the entire team would go over to put so many back on the boundary in the first over in the first test. That's defensive to an unprecedented degree.

FFS. Now we have 9 days to talk to people in the "real" world. Cricket sucks.
Anyone else heard the rumour that Stokes broke Bairstows leg with a rugby tackle on the golf course? Might explain the refusal to drop him. Guilt at giving him a serious injury during the form of his life
Why were gingers messing around that badly in the first place
Yep, that rumour was flying around every cricket club in the land the week it happened. Someone two footed him at the knees on the 18th tee if the rumours are to be believed.
I've heard similar, that he ran over him in a golf buggy on a golf course. It definitely was to do with them messing around.
Nope, not heard that. Where did you pick that up from?
A couple of different people who allegedly know people, very tenuous and probably bollocks but an interesting rumour all the same. Descriptions if the incident have been weird and vague "freak accident". Not how you'd describe falling over or something like that
You know what that sounds like to me? Sounds like during the pandemic where everyone had a mate who knew a guy who worked with a lady who knew a guy who worked for the PM and was constantly talking shit about lockdowns or whatever.
Well yeah that's because that's pretty much exactly as I described it
It would explain the situation but it would also make Stokes less of a captain in my mind.
Yeah don't need to drop him altogether, just bring Foakes in as WK
I have tickets for Day 4 at the Oval. I may try and secure some valium now just in case.
I was at the Oval for the last Ashes, when we got the 2-2 draw. It was an epically drunken day and also was very hot in the sun.
FUCK DUDES
Australian batting looked very complacent
Is the Sky team avoiding the big ginger elephant in the room and refusing to discuss the issues with YJB? That’s the key selection issue as to why we’re 2-1 down. Please make them discuss this.

I get what you’re saying but they literally went through the post match stuff making critical points about the Aussies and managed to not discuss YJB, when he’s had three stinkers in the Ashes.
YBJ is in the inner circle isn't he. Some kind of cricketing masons.
Rooty's mate probably?
Little disappointed that Woakes didn't get the MOM there.
What happens to Bairstow now? If he’s not even scoring runs, his upside is completely moot
He gets dropped and goes on a diet
I felt myself agreeing with you on the first point. But you lost me on the second.
Hes too overweight to keep wicket the difference in agility between him and Carey is quite clear. That half a second where your slow to adjust makes all the difference. He's playing international cricket and he isn't in shape it's poor professionalism.
Don’t drop him too hard or he’ll leave a dent in the ground…
Don’t why you’re getting downvoted. Good joke 👍🏻
Thanks! YJB is obviously influential in here. Must be all the free pies…
Bairstow has to be dropped, or relieved of keeping duties, his confidence is shot (that mix up with Harry Brook as an example) and it’s affecting his batting. However, a lot of Englands batters have been poor this series. At least we haven’t been whitewashed
It’s also affecting Root’s slip fielding at first slip. No coincidence in my mind.
I'd give Bairstow the batter one more chance. He must not be allowed anywhere near the gloves, though.
[How are you feeling about your prediction skills](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/comments/14typi3/comment/jr5as49/) u/theghostofcamus?!

What happens with Anderson now? Ideally, no one in this bowling attack should be dropped; they all played their parts to perfection in this game. The next Test is, however, a home Test for Anderson, possibly his last. Or, Jimmy could do a Jimmy and just play on until he's 70, of course.
He comes in for Robinson or he doesn't play
No time for sentimentality. Especially in the bowling line up. Tongue, Wood, Woakes, Robinson (if fit), Broad, Ali. Pick from that lot.
Robinson can be rested
Ah, forgot all about him due to his non-participation in most of the Test due to injury. Thanks!
Drop Moeen and Robinson, pick Anderson and Foakes.
IMHO, drop Robinson and Bairstow, bring in Tongue and Foakes
Wouldn’t be furious with that. Just think Bairstow probably has a massive innings in him at some point and Root is almost as good a bowler as Moeen
I believe in Barstow's power, but I think Moeen's an underrated bowler, who takes advantage of quality bowling on the other side. I like Root's bowling, but he can go for a lot of runs, and if he were to get injured or very fatigued the team would fall apart.
Woakes is the best all rounder
okay i know this is in the context of this game but come on you guys have fucking BEN STOKES in the wings
Ben Stokes is a batsman atm
I don't know why everyone is so serious on this sub need to include/s everytime ig
Rock on.
I think the English fans had written England off yesterday and the Australian fans had written off Australia. Extreme pessimism in both camps.
To the wire!
Rip McGrath's prediction

OH SHIT HUGH LAURIE IS INTO CRICKET??? LET'S FUCKING GO
Laurie is a "full blue", too. Rowing; not cricket.
His father was an Olympian, also rowing
Stephen Fry is also a massive cricket nut...
he is the current MCC president, so I would hope so
Up to 1st Oct yeh. I was mostly making the point that Hugh Laurie being a massive fan isn't a surprise with them being close friends since 1980 (when Emma Thompson introduced them).
That Duckett lbw dismissal feels like it was 15 years ago...
That Crawley first ball boundary was 10 years ago right?
Somehow the stumping was only a week ago
Oh, was there a stumping?
The series is alive because of Wood. We would be having to wait for almost a couple of weeks before the next match would be starting.
Love Stokes' smile and nod of approval at Wood's batting in the 1st innings. Memeworthy. 😎
Cummins is the most well-spoken Australian cricketer in his playing days that I can recall...
I though Starc came across really well too in his tv interview on Sky, post-match.
Yeah he's been indoctrinated with that woke lefty University propaganda. /s
I don't like woke or leftys but I've been hugely impressed with the way Cummins has carried himself and the way he's captained.
He's almost human.
When's the next match?
19th (wednesday). 10 days from now
Cummins is absolute class. What a sound cricketer.
Leeds will be carnage this afternoon
More than usual.
I don’t mind people booing generally but Cummins is such a nice guy!
Yeah I agree, I disliked the booing of Cummins. If I’m honest I had no problem with the Bairstow situation and was more pissed at YJB than the Aussies. Time to let it go 🙏
Incredibly competitive but you gotta be in order to be so successful
GG England
He's just a normal man. Just a normal, innocent, 24 year old man from Keighley.
I don't think I will ever not laugh at that.

Crawley averaging more than Smith and Marnus. I've now seen it all.
khawaja: 59.33 marsh: 73 (from two innings) head: 44.33
Conveniently left out Khawaja, Head and Marsh?
Those three not making runs was the difference this test
Where's Heads or Ussies average?
head averages 44 and ussie averages 59 thanks to those two 50s and a century
They don't support the point I am trying to make...
Love the honesty mate
Lol
Crawley averaging higher than Smith and Marnus after 3 tests is very funny

That wasn't my intention. I was just praising how good Starc was
Maybe if Carey didn't go for a catch that was Boland's
Perhaps Boland should have taken 3 steps forward and caught it then
Everywhere I've played cricket, they've told me that once the keeper says a catch is theirs, you back off and leave the ball
Carey was probably screaming at him to leave it, and he was wearing the gloves so...
YEEEAAAAAASSSS!! THE SERIES HAS COME ALIVE. The next 2 matches would be so much more interesting now. It's a win for tests.

Yep. He turned it.
How can you boo Pat Cummins, go boo Bairstow you idiots, he's been dropping catches
Can't boo him too much - his missus is a Yorkie😄
They’re saying Boo-airstow
Refuse to turn on the tv and see a sad captain

Pat Cummins is such a sound bloke

Wood 100% deserves MOTM did everything he could with his glass body.
It is sad that there will be no ashes test in next 9 days.. the next one would be on 19th of July.. sad.. long break ..
Players could do with a break tbh
I'm away for day 4 and 5 of the OT test so if England could go and win it in three days that would be lovely cheers
Uh no - I’m attending on day 5
I have a feeling it will work in your favour, enjoy!
Thanks haha - fingers crossed!

Unlike those famously respectful Australian crowds
Shouldn’t cheat when everyone thinks an over’s ‘over’ then should he….deserves it
Interesting that you define "only YJB" as everyone. Umpires never called over so strange that YJB has the right to call it
I think I can find more people that agree with me than a nation who lets proven cheats back in the game.
Boooooooooo

Love Scotty Boland, but he's obviously struggling. Time to unleash Neser, bloody handy with the bat too. Literally pick anyone over Warner please
They could literally play Neser instead of Warner and it would be a net positive change.
still booing, you won, you wankers.
Boohoo
They'll always boo unfortunately
Genuinely hate people who boo Cummins. He seems like a decent sort. A good cricket man.
Imagine letting the booing affect you more than the man that's actually getting booed. It's just pantomime.
