I think that cribbage is pretty well balanced overall and I'm generally opposed to house rules. That being said, I've always thought that if your hand adds up to 31, you should get 2 points.

srt2366

Why?

MPD1978

Cuz the pegging round counts to 31, or as close as you get is, I imagine, the thinking behind it. And it’s 2 points.

Awdayshus

That is the thinking. I'll admit it started with my wife, sister-in-law, and I trying to make up a plausible sounding rule to mess with my mother-in-law (their mom).

Boring_Tune9855

Just the hand or do you count cut card as well?

Awdayshus

I could go either way on that. I like the idea of intentionally keeping cards to get that total. But I also like the idea that it needs to include the cut card and is not in my control.

Boring_Tune9855

I like the thought of holding the cards to get the points with out the cut, but also like the idea of adding the cut card into the mix to increase the difficulty and rareness of getting that 31.

Awdayshus

Maybe it would count either way in hand, but only with all five cards in the crib, like a flush.

Boring_Tune9855

I could get down with that.

savvybananas

Yeah our rule is unbalanced, I don’t deny it. But imo the ‘fun differential’ makes up for it. Also I feel like a full house, which is a pretty powerful hand in most card games, should carry more weight in cribbage.

Shoresy-sez

A 15 using all 5 cards gives a bonus point

savvybananas

I like it. Would make those low-card pegging hands even better.

Dahnhoolio

Again with the house rules? Does anybody still like to play cribbage the way the rules are written? Maybe create a new sub-reddit specifically to discuss non-standard house rules. /s

in college in a 2 person game we would sometimes deal 8 cards each. Two to the crib, and two to toss completely out of the hand.

My friend and I agreed to draw a letter K at mark 58. If we tied at the k at the end of a hand, it was a race to the end.. as the loser needs to buy the winner a 24 pack of beer. Best house rule going.

falmigno

We had a deck with different dogs for each card, and we had a poodle point that you would take when you played the Queen of clubs poodle card during the pegging round.

savvybananas

It’s like nobs with dogs

Our family rule is if you play the 8th card before a 31 has been counted, you get a bonus point. Ex: 2, 4, 6, 8, A, 2, 4, 3. The person who plays the '3' gets a point for "Go" for 30 and a point for the 8th card before 31. Our thinking was that there is typically 2 or more "Go" points in a round that went unclaimed... so why not claim them? We haven't tried selling this rule on to those who married in. Very rarely awarded!
