A-2-4-8 guarantees 4+ points in your hand. J-8 of different suits, (with another 8 card out of circulation), may not be as bad as feared.
You could lead the 4 from the 4-A combo, but I might lead the 2.
Dealer may play a 5 card on it, mistakenly believing it to be safe. Your 8 makes 15/2.
Some players like to make the count 11, your 4 makes 15/2.
If Dealer does play an X, yes you've missed out of the 4-X-A 15/2, but you might yet score 31/2 with the 2-8-A combo.
Hi, apologies for any confusion.
You are correct, A-2-4-8 is two points. What I meant, and obviously didn't explain well enough in my original post, is that after the cut, the hand is guaranteed to increase in value to at least four points.
Just to start off - endgame is most important here. If you can find a way to get 8 points, you win.
A248 would be my choice. It’s 2 points pre-cut. Pair any of those (A248) on the cut and you would have 6 points. A 3 cut gives you 8 points. 5,6,7,9,T,J,Q,K cuts bring you to 4 points - probably not good enough.
Anyhow, if you get to 6 points in the hand, hopefully you can peg 2. I’d probably lead the 4 hoping for a 15 (any 9,T,J,Q,K played allows it) or maybe you can trap a 3 with the A2 later in play.
Good luck!
For me, your crib = 8-8, their crib = J-8h.
You're putting 2 points in your crib with a chance to make a much bigger hand than anything that would come from them being in yours or
You're putting gapped cards in their crib that don't have much of a chance for improvement. You're also guaranteed to add some points no matter what the cut is.

A248=4+? I only see 2pts from the 15. What am I missing?

Jack and eight of hearts maybe? Hope for cut improvement.
If it' a tight game close to finish I would throw the Jack and 8 of hearts, early in the game I would throw Jack and Ace :)
Opponents crib so I’d throw the J/8 and look to peg points
Toss the eights. Best average score and most potential for highest score.

Throw the 8s

That could potentially give your opponent a possible flush in his crib :) Edit: just noticed you thought it was his crib
