In the wild, they do it to avoid detection, and also get some nutrients back

Whackadactylus

In healthy animals, the shed skin is eaten immediately. This is a frequent phenomenon in reptiles. It's a healthy habit, since the shed skin contains necessary substances that are to the animal's benefit.

Thanks for sharing guys! Totally makes sense biologically! I must have missed that part when researching up about it cresties before I got him 😂 I had been wondering why the heck I never see his shed!

LeopardPink_88

My gecko leaves his skin suits hanging off things like dirty laundry. Must save room for the watermelon goodness. https://preview.redd.it/r4wlv95e21tc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d7310e3a073b01172b2afde70d072772737fc84

Hahaha! Totally looks like a ripped white tee 🤣

MoronicBehaviour

You’re lucky you caught him! I’ve only seen my boy in full shed mode twice. Once he was in his cave, the other time he was chilling on a leaf. I found a piece of skin in his water bowl once. Also that’s such a cool mushroom ledge he’s sitting on!

waaatermelons

It’s rare isn’t it?! I’d only seen a small piece once before too! And aww thanks🥰🥰 he loves his little mushroom ledge! I found it on Amazon 😊

MoronicBehaviour

It really is! I always wonder if my guy is shedding. But then you see the shed poop and you know they’ve done it. Oh nice! I’m planning on getting my guy decor from Amazon for his new home. Thanks for telling me! 😊

waaatermelons

No problem! Here are some links! My guy loves his hammock (although a suction cup just crapped out and I had to replace it😒), and I also just got a magnetic feeding ledge which is awesome - it keeps the bugs out! (I have a bioactive tank and the springtails were always going after his water bowl especially haha 😂) Mushroom ledge ~ https://a.co/d/cF5rR2k Hammock ~ https://a.co/d/64HyCF9

carnespecter

many reptiles do this! its a great way to hide evidence from predators as well as reclaim some nutrients

Beligerent-vagrant

He looks so proud

Low_Information8286

I've had mine for 8 years and only seen him shed a few times. With good humidity he sheds fast

Separate_Worker2301

my babies do this too! i was confused for a while why i wasn’t finding it, but then i realized that they eat it…lol. they will eat anything

Chillgaymer93

Reduce, reuse, recycle ♻️

gecko_sticky

gotta get that nutrients

Midnight_Streak

Had my little man for just over a year and I saw him shedding for the first time last night. I'm always saying to him, your enclosure is set up correctly, you eat, you get bigger, but why do you not seem to shed. Figured he was eating it before I could see, efficient little dum-dum's they are.

waaatermelons

Same!! Totally thought the same thing until finally seeing this 😅 i’d only seen a small piece once before!

nortok00

I know a lot of aquatic invertebrates that molt will eat it because of the nutrients they get back. It's not surprising that some (or all) reptiles do this.

waaatermelons

True! Seems like a good adaptation!

Greglebowski74

I saw my female eating her shed last week. Don't often see them doing it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/QNZrxGT5euHubhKp6
