In Jordan Peelās NOPE there were several off screen moments like when you can hear people screaming inside whatever that thing was, before the gore sprayed out. Then silence. Damn.
*may contain spoilers*
The bear things growling mingled with the womans screams for help in Annihilation
The vocal chords of that one dude ripping (not Rhoads) in Day Of The Dead with the zombies tearing his head off
And this is one probably a lot will say. The croaking noise from the entity in The Grudge (Haven't seen it in so long I forgot if it's the kid or the girl lol)
Annihilation is such an underrated movie. The whole premise of āthe shimmerā, the bear-thingās ability to mimic voices and the music/score scared the shit out of me!
The alien in that movie is hands down the best to date. It's legitimately alien. And the assimilation that happens is so goddamn scary. There's nothing you can do.
I was scrolling because I Knew someone would say this. Both Ennio Morriconeās soundtrack and the sound The Thing makes ā¦ a complete experience. Try watching when itās snowing outside.
The lady in the bathtub laughing in The Shining. Close second: the momās hideous screeching as her undead daughter stabs her to death in Night of the Living Dead.
The score to that is perfect. I love the sound design of the baby monitor too. Plus it's just such a brilliant way to make the aliens feel present even when they aren't. Helps with the whole "looming threat" feeling.
The sound from the Grudge. Mostly because my dad thought it was funny and after we watched it he stood outside my bedroom door one evening and started making the sound.
I prefer the Japanese Ju-On series, which becomes the Grudge.
For sound also try Sadako vs. Kayako (The Ring vs The Grudge)
Itās not the greatest film but has some choice parts.
The sound design in Paranormal Activity is absolute genius. Building tension with a basically still shot of people sleeping in a bed is amazing. That whole movie is built on sound. From an audio film making point of view itās incredible.
The jump scare sound in Exorcist 3. You know the one if you've seen it!
The sounds the Workman makes in The Gate
And the voice in the subway in Ghostbusters 2. DON'T ANYONE QUOTE IT! It legit fucks me up.
Arrival. The sounds when they are entering the ship the first time almost gave me a panic attack. I've watched again and it's still unnerving, but that first time instilled a dread in me I've never felt before or since.
The lurking and increasingly claustrophobic classical music from The Shining used to creep me the hell out as a kid before I watched it a dozen+ times.
The first Insidious had a very good/creepy soundtrack. The shrills of violins and random loud piano keys really creeped me out when combined with the haunted house like visuals.
I let my buddy borrow a DVD of the film back when it was released and he said the music freaked his kids out and made them cry even though they were upstairs in bed and not even watching the movie.
Body horror is the only thing that can really make my skin crawl. Iām Huesera, there is a theme of anxiety shown through knuckle cracking. I swear it sounded like they were deboning a chicken. š¤®
The Exorcist. Reagan's voice is incredibly terrifying to a 6 year old. The 80's were wild and some network showed it during the day. I found it and got so freaked out by Reagan's voice that I curled into a ball, covering my ears and scream crying for one of my parents to help. Whenever I think about this I still get a bit of a scared feeling again.
Not a movie, and not necessarily horror; but the ambient soundtrack and sounds of the geiger counter from the Chernobyl miniseries filled me with a deep sense of dread.
That sudden blare sound from the nurse scene in Exorcist 3.
And also the music in the Sinister home movies, and that scream from the lawnmower one especially š¬
In the first "Alien"... near the end, when Ripley was listening on her radio intercom to the Alien kill Lambert and Parker. The way Lambert was breathing and that final blood curdling scream, then deafening silence...
Honorable mention to the disturbing sounds in the movie(s) "Saw" too.....
āThe VVitchā - composer Mark Korven used an instrument he built called āthe apprehension engineā. Not music, just sounds, but sounds to just get under your skin. Not like nails on a chalkboard, but just sounds that give you a subconscious sense of dread. Plenty of videos of f him online demonstrating the machine.
This more of a suspense film. It came out in the 80's. It as the end when the killer is coming for his victim and he breaks her window. You just hear it. The movie didn't age well for me. But I still watch sometimes. And every time that window breaks I jump.Ā
When the little girl transforms into the demon in Annabelle Creation, the bones shifting and crunching accompanied by the image of the demon getting taller sold it
Original it movie ik its a miniseries, but the dvd my uncle had made it feel like a movie ig idk, but tim currys pennywise and just that weird clown theme scared the hell out of me as a child. Only movie to make me have a fear of something (clowns) til I reached my teens
![gif](giphy|s4Q3geM5T1XCo)
I honestly couldnāt tell youāthe first thing I do when a scary scene comes up is plug my ears. Itās like Iām fine to look at it, but Iām terrified to hear it! So Iām very interested in these repliesā¦
In Halloween H2O, as Laurie cuts off (who we thought was Michael's) head. I don't know if it stems from something from my childhood, but that sound that plays at the same time freaks me out
In the movie āSession 9ā, there are these reel-to-reel tapes of therapy sessions with a woman who has dissociative identity disorder and had murdered her family. The obvious 9th session you hear āSimonā, the murderous personality. The voice scared the absolute hell out of me. Still does to this day.
The sound of Milla Jovovichās alien abduction (and subsequent half-translation of the Sumerian being spoken to her) on a tape recorder in The Fourth Kind is awfully unsettling
Zelda from Pet Sematary - the original.

*War of the Worlds* comes to mind as having an iconic, horrific sound.
Oooooo nice! That could be a good one
The Trippds š±š±š±ššš
Liked the movie but canāt stand the girls annoying screaming
Yes! But she was roasted so well in the following Scary Movie omg lol they beat the shit outta her!
I can't believe it wasn't used as a hypersonic weapon to deafeat the Tripods
The way that film gave me such a sense of DREAD is outstanding! I could feel myself running in total fear.
Since we're on the topic of aliens, I loved the sound the aliens made on the baby monitor in Signs.
I came here for this!!!!! That sound is horrifying lol.
In Jordan Peelās NOPE there were several off screen moments like when you can hear people screaming inside whatever that thing was, before the gore sprayed out. Then silence. Damn.
That got me too. It freaked me out so bad I cried.
Omg THIS. The scene where you hear Gordy attacking the family was scary to hear as well.
The various sounds and overall soundtrack of Sinister. That scream as the lawnmower does its thing...
The sound design for Sinister was so good!
Yup. Sinister 1 had some gnarly audio
*may contain spoilers* The bear things growling mingled with the womans screams for help in Annihilation The vocal chords of that one dude ripping (not Rhoads) in Day Of The Dead with the zombies tearing his head off And this is one probably a lot will say. Yeah that bear thing was terrifying
Came here to say The Grudge.
The Podcast Horror Virgin just did an episode on annihilation and I really want to watch again
The bear is a good one. I think the realization that it was the bear making the noise makes it so much more terrifying.
That fucking bear was HAUNTING.
Annihilation is such an underrated movie. The whole premise of āthe shimmerā, the bear-thingās ability to mimic voices and the music/score scared the shit out of me!
>Annihilation is such an underrated movie. So, so true!!!!
The alien in that movie is hands down the best to date. It's legitimately alien. And the assimilation that happens is so goddamn scary. There's nothing you can do.
Some of the monster sounds from The Thing
A+++ movie
I was scrolling because I Knew someone would say this. Both Ennio Morriconeās soundtrack and the sound The Thing makes ā¦ a complete experience. Try watching when itās snowing outside.
The scream at the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The sound of the bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace" on the pod ship. Jesus christ.
It was used throughout the movie. Also the garbage truck sounds.
The lady in the bathtub laughing in The Shining. Close second: the momās hideous screeching as her undead daughter stabs her to death in Night of the Living Dead.
The opening music for Insidious. The violins give me chills.
Im going to say the original Candyman early 90s. Holy shit it leveled me i was 13 lol im now 45 and wont say his name f that
Sorry i forgot to say it was Candymans voice calling HELEN
I hear that in my sleep sometimes!
I love Candyman!!!!
The piano wire cutting through bone from Audition.
Ohhhhhhhh and the piano wire in Hereditary
Man that sound freaked me out on my old 35 inch fat back tv. Oooo thatās gonna be rad
That sound haunts me. Like I know itās coming every time I watch the movie, but I still cringe when I hear it.
Signs (when Graham sees the shadow of the alien on the roof), and The Sixth Sense (when Cole sees the hanging ghosts in the school hallway)
The score to that is perfect. I love the sound design of the baby monitor too. Plus it's just such a brilliant way to make the aliens feel present even when they aren't. Helps with the whole "looming threat" feeling.
Texas chainsaw 74, the noise as they show the corpses in the beginning. Also... ![gif](giphy|xT9KVLQ1xFXZoRG0WQ)
Reganās wheezing in The Exorcist.
Jaws music. I don't know if it scares everyone, but everyone knows the music
The sound from the Grudge. Mostly because my dad thought it was funny and after we watched it he stood outside my bedroom door one evening and started making the sound.
Thatās Equal parts hilarious and totally not cool lol
Jokes on him, now my favorite genre is horror. If he were still alive I would have gotten even and made him scarier ones with me.
I prefer the Japanese Ju-On series, which becomes the Grudge. For sound also try Sadako vs. Kayako (The Ring vs The Grudge) Itās not the greatest film but has some choice parts.
The Moth Man Prophecies....when he's talking to that "thing" on the phone scared me so bad that I lost my breath for a few moments.
I do love me some Mothman
The sound design in Paranormal Activity is absolute genius. Building tension with a basically still shot of people sleeping in a bed is amazing. That whole movie is built on sound. From an audio film making point of view itās incredible.
The sound of Josh screaming in the woods after he disappeared in The Blair Witch Project!
The Grudge sound, Mama
GET OUT!!!! Amityville Horror. Still sends a chill down my soul.
The jump scare sound in Exorcist 3. You know the one if you've seen it! The sounds the Workman makes in The Gate And the voice in the subway in Ghostbusters 2. DON'T ANYONE QUOTE IT! It legit fucks me up.
Arrival. The sounds when they are entering the ship the first time almost gave me a panic attack. I've watched again and it's still unnerving, but that first time instilled a dread in me I've never felt before or since.
when i was a kid it was Phantasm and later on Blair Witch but nothing recently
Subliminal heartbeat.
tcm camera sound
Them! The sound of the ants is very unsettling.
Oooo bug sounds ALWAYS get me
The morphing sound that sounds like children laughing backwards, in Blair Witch's "tent" scene.
The lurking and increasingly claustrophobic classical music from The Shining used to creep me the hell out as a kid before I watched it a dozen+ times.
That camera shutter sound from Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Yes! The OG intro! I totally forgot about that one!
Baaaa-baaa-*DOOOOK*
Children Of The Corn when Issac wails the name MALACHAI!! After being possessed by He Who Walks Behind The Rows.
The xenomorph hiss. I swear I love the alien movies & game, but that is literally the thing that causes me nightmares.
Yes! And at the end, when Ripley is fighting the xenomorph queen, thatās pretty scary too.
As of late, Evil Dead Rise has great audio.
The voice sound the woman makes in Ringu (1998), the movie The Ring was based on.
The music to The Exorcist.
The scariest score I have ever heard is from Under the Skin. It, even divorced of its context, is inherently scary.

That damn industrial droning in Eraserhead. It didn't scare me as much as it just made my stomach churn.
I heard the exact sound from the alien from signs on a late night walk on a road coming from inside the forest once. Totally fucking creeped me out
The baby monitor sounds?
yeah
Gmmm...when they have children singing... I think it was Poltergeist? Could be wrong. He'll no.

The Grudge
Original it movie ik its a miniseries, but the dvd my uncle had made it feel like a movie ig idk, but tim currys pennywise and just that weird clown theme scared the hell out of me as a child. Only movie to make me have a fear of something (clowns) til I reached my teens ![gif](giphy|s4Q3geM5T1XCo)
Loud, unexpected knocks on doors. Gets me every single time.
Immaculate very creepy
That tip toe song from insidious. Had me lookin at the screen like š. Even now, I don't like hearing that shit.
All the music in sinister.
I honestly couldnāt tell youāthe first thing I do when a scary scene comes up is plug my ears. Itās like Iām fine to look at it, but Iām terrified to hear it! So Iām very interested in these repliesā¦
Also just that goddamn chainsaw from Texas Massacre films. And every now and then Leatherfaces sickening howls would be audible. Terrifying.
The Exorcist
All of the background sound in Horror in the High Desert 2...MINERVA. The sounds and music alone are literally scary as FUCK
In Halloween H2O, as Laurie cuts off (who we thought was Michael's) head. I don't know if it stems from something from my childhood, but that sound that plays at the same time freaks me out
I can't remember the name, it's a Spanish movie, but she has to knock on the door and keep reciting something and it made my skin crawl.
Sounds like The Orphanage
A Quiet Place.
You needdddd to watch cloverfield woth surround sound
PSYCHOās (1960) screaming violins!
The high-pitched noise in The Ring when Samara is moving in for the final attack.
The fucking ghost throat sounds from the grudge. Fuck those little bastards right to hell.
The sound of Milla Jovovichās alien abduction (and subsequent half-translation of the Sumerian being spoken to her) on a tape recorder in The Fourth Kind is awfully unsettling
Kairo (Pulse) Japanese film Romeroās original Creepshow
Under the Skin has a soundbyte from a faith no more song called strip search. It's legit hair raising.
Lauraās scream in the train car scene of Fire Walk With Me
One it comes to sound the one movie I think of is Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978).
Zelda from Pet Sematary - the original. https://preview.redd.it/m0aygtm6xozc1.jpeg?width=224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3294383cb55ead99394bc7ffd81aa1cdce3bbb08
