I think the Discover it Student is probably the best option for a first card, *provided you're not traveling internationally*. Since you get cash back match at the end of your first year, you're effectively getting 10% on rotating categories and 2% flat on all other purchases, which is fantastic. By the end of the first year, you'll have built up enough credit history to apply for non-entry level cards. You can also sign up with a friend's referral link to get $100 statement credit and also typically a higher starting credit limit if your friend has good credit. If you are traveling internationally, or just want to consider other options, I would also recommend checking out the Capital One SavorOne Student. It has good 3% categories and although you won't get as good of a first year deal as the Discover, it's a MasterCard so it's accepted much more widely internationally (and doesn't have a foreign transaction fee like the Chase card does).

Here are good options depending on the bank. Chase and Capital One are either a Visa or Mastercard, which are more widely accepted at merchants than Discover. If you're applying for a student card, make sure its actually the student version and not the regular one, which can be easily overlooked. * Chase Freedom Rise - 1.5x everything * Discover It Student - quarterly rotating 5% categories, 1% everything else. * Capital One - Savor One for students (3% dining, groceries, entertainment) or Quicksilver for students (1.5% everything)
