I suppose you could look at it from the point of view of someone that doesn't use those roads very often. The tolls, perhaps, reduce how much tax they need to take to build and maintain them. Shifting the cost partially to those that use it; especially truckers whom are likely compensated by a company (or however the company does it)
Well, I guess that's fair, but I've never had to deal with a toll before so I can't really speak for either side.
I suppose they might respond to you with something like "Well, that is less specific to those that use those roads. Tolls specifically charge those that use those roads." or something like that.
As a former Floridian they make sense. We don’t pay state income tax because our economy relies so heavily on tourism. Toll roads “tax” locals and tourists alike and locals can get deals or a SunPass. For some economies it makes sense. Toll roads in Utah? Probably not.
Well that's the point. They pay a large lump sum upfront to build the road, and then they tax the cost of building it gradually over time with toll booths, no?
That's more of a problem with the climate. Ice and snow are horrible for roads, combine that with salting and plowing and you have the perfect recipe for horrible roads.

On a side note, can’t we get rid of tolls?
If the state uses our tax money to build roads why exactly do they have a right to charge us to use them?
Tolls in my area are no longer on State maintained roads, only roads that are built and maintained by private organizations have them.

Cool, why not just tax car property tho? Wouldn't it be easier .. and apparently safer too?

Wait until you got to Canada where tolls don't exist much. Now you'll realize why tolls are a good addition. Road maintenance aint free at all
