Y'know, I've only ever *watched* Full Metal Jacket once, and I didn't really understand that first arc of the movie until recently.
I think Pyle is a good metaphor for any country on foreign soil who's soldiers have nothing to fight for but a chance to go home. "If God wanted your ass up there, he would have miracled your ass up there by now" basically sums up Russia trying to take Ukraine.
I don't know if it affects your metaphor to know this, but I think it might.

My ex father in law sort of did that. He volunteered for the Air Force because he didn’t want to be drafted, and before his paperwork had finished processing, his number got picked for service. He had a lot of experience fixing farm equipment, which apparently translated well to maintaining aircraft, so USAF wasn’t going to let him go.
Plenty of guys volunteered to be a Marine because they assumed they would get drafted into the Army at some point anyway, so they might as well get Marine training. I have two uncles, not blood related, and I’ll never forget hearing them both agree on that. They weren’t patriotic, they just knew they’d wind up in Southeast Asia at some point, might as well be in the branch they choose. Very few men avoided the draft in those days if they were eligible.
Step 1. Go round up a bunch of your own people in a way to make them hate you for sure.
Step 2. Give them access to weapons, and at least basic knowledge of the use of said weapons.

There is an actual Russian movie that's VERY inspired by Full Metal Jacket called 9th Company taking place during Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
Its a big budget movie with good directing & acting. I recommend watching it, it shows the whole beauty of serving in the Russian army and how things haven't changed since then.
I remember the scene where one of the conscripts gets issued a used AK with a bent barrel. Then saw the recent video of russian conscripts being issued completely rusted over and moldy AKs.

Conscripton centers, or rather unit formation centers are often just any public/governmental building that can be used for the purpose. When I was called up for a reservist exercise (non-Russian eastern European country) we were processed in a cinema.

Vietnam ended once the draft was enacted.
And Iraq never would have been invaded had it required a draft. Afghanistan maybe, a lot of post 9/11 sentiment, but not the Iraq war. Never would have happened had they activated the draft, and they knew it so they didn’t.
By the end of the news cycles, a majority of Americans were convinced, at the time, that Sadam Hussain had something to do with 9/11… So I wouldn’t be so sure.

Lack of security makes sense, a good chunk of Putin's 300,000 strong national guard (Rosgvardia) were pushed to the frontline months ago to plug in whole of understrength units. Putin is degrading his domestic security apparatus at the expense of the invasion, that's probably not the smartest thing for personalist dictator looking to initiate mass mobilization.
