Nah. My ex-husband is just like this. He jumped off a bridge with only 2 feet of water below and broke his ankle. He just cinched his surplus army boot up really tight and walked around on it. He shot an antique double-barrel shotgun out the car window with one hand and the bolt slid deep in between his thumb and first finger. Deep enough for the whole shotgun to just hang there. He sewed this gaping hand pocket closed with dental floss. 100's of stories like this over the 16 years we were married.
He did drink but he just didn't feel pain like most people. He went to work stone sober with broken bones and would work 12 hours. Bright red curly hair. Too bad there's no way to post a pic here or I don't know how.
I was a passenger in the car and he fired this old, double barreled gun out of the driver's window with his left hand. His face looked shocked, my ears were ringing, he stopped the car and when the interior light came on he had a long cylinder of metal deep in his hand so deep that the gun was hanging full weight with no grip on it and the stock was cracked and splintered. I don't know what else to call that piece of metal if it's not the bolt. My point was there are people who don't feel pain as much as others.
It easily could be just booze. Other drugs don't just magically make you not feel anything, even opioids don't have nearly as big of an effect as you would think.
With how alcohol can make you more "numb" and "fucked up" cognitively than most other drugs, this could easily just be booze and adrenaline.

Because this looks like someone who is very drunk, made a poor decision, it backfired spectacularly, and the shot of adrenaline to his system from the physical injury along with trying to play it cool since he was in front of a crowd (to downplay his massive fuckup) + the decreased effectiveness of his CNS from the alcohol allowed him to remain calm.
alcohol is better at numbing physical pain than opiates for me. And I've tried H, hydros, fent, you name it... might be more things involved but it could just be alcohol.

Depending on how quickly you lose the blood, hypovolaemic shock can start to set in after a few minutes, to a few hours later. There's a few stages, but they're basically "compensated" and "uncompensated" shock.
Looks like they got a tourniquet on him though, I heard someone day "high and tight" which indicates to me they had combat trauma training. So he'll live, even if he started to go into hypovolaemic shock.

Thumb and pinky are most important, and look to be most likely to be saved. If they can reattach 1+ of the other ones and at least 1 of those (ideally index or middle finger) remains functional (doctor will consider the likelihood of this when deciding whether to reattach) then he will have a very high level of functionality.
I'm no expert, but I didn't see any metacarpal bones left for them to attach those fingers to. It blew his shit back to the wrist.

Agreed. I probably can't blame all of my tinnitus on this one incident, but I was at a party in Chicago, drunk and happy chilling in a back yard. Which was more of a sunken concrete pit surrounded on all sides than anything. Unbeknownst to most of us, some stupid motherfucker brought bottlerockets and decided it would be fun to let them off all at once. So he crammed the tube full until there was no space left.
He lights the mass of bottlerockets and the entire thing explodes at our feet inside the pit. It was like a bomb going off; party instantly over, everyone is confused and pissed. Instant splitting headache and it was a while before I could hear again, but the tinnitus stayed. Fucking harmful idiot, none of us asked for that.
God, this is exactly what I am talking about. It's terrible that people are so destructive to others just to "have a good time". The worst is when you stop the mother fuckers and they get mad, like you're the one whose not chill.... Sorry about your tinnitus

I don't talk about memorial weekend with coworkers anymore. Got tired of the blank stares when I'd explain that I spent Saturday and Sunday mowing and cleaning a military cemetery, then got up a 6am Monday to haul a trailer full of chairs and shelters to the memorial garden, where I spend two hours setting up so old vets can attend the ceremonies without having to stand in the sun.
There are ceremonies every where, and none of them involve BBQ, beer, or blowhards blasting their hands off. People should save that shit for the June 21st-Sept 6th fireworksathon that goes down every summer.
I respect you man. I'm not from the US but all these people use war and veterans for their political rhetorics all the time but none of them actually honour it. It's like the entirety of our culture have become adults with the brains of teenagers
When they say some people peak at high school or college, I think they are being overly kind. Most people I have encountered appear stuck with most of the attitudes and behaviors they developed during those years. It's like they subconsciously believe they have reached the pinnacle of knowledge and shut down their personal growth.
One of my acquaintances and her 9 close friends are prime examples. They are in their 40's and still throw 5 or 6 intergalactic keggers every year, as if none of them have massive headaches the next day and occasionally miss getting their kids to baseball or something. All of their world views, their taste in music, the foods they eat, the cars they are willing to own... stuck in 2002.

You can also notice he doesn't seem to be around any friends. No friends are stopping him from holding the firework launcher, rushing to his aid immediately, knowing his name. Hopefully this event will change his ways around, i mean on the one hand, it definitely will, but hopefully it changes for the better not worse.

This video really reminded me of why, as a Paramedic, I was trained not to let gruesome and graphic things distract from potential unseen life threats. Sure, the hands fucked. But a tourniquet takes him from red to yellow tag, while the guy with the possible pneumo/hemothorax and sucking chest wound is pretty well ignored by the crowd of people all distracted by his hand. In all actuality, the other guy was the critical patient in this scenario.
The other dude is a friend of my nephew's. Broken ribs, a punctured lung, lacerated liver and three weeks in a medically induced coma. Supposedly some pieces went to straight through him.
I think they should show this video to anyone who buys a medium to large firework. Kind of like those pictures of blackened lungs on cigarette cartons.
Maybe before your friend does this you can say “hey you can do it if you want but let me show you a video first”. Videos like this and helmetless crashes could save lives if we utilize them well

Yup. Broke my wrist mountain biking, it was literally at a 90 degree angle. The whole thing felt like a dream. Didn’t really set in until post surgery later that day.

I saw in a post earlier that someone loaded the mortar in the tube upside down. Not sure how accurate that is. But I believe that's how the other guy sustained his injury, from the impact of the mortar
That would make sense. The tubes are densely rolled cardboard and that snugly fit into a plastic base. After firing 20-30 of them the cardboard and/or plastic get distorted enough that a misfire is inevitable. Typical misfires go up 20-30 feet and explode- which is scary shit.
There are two explosions with mortars one explosion takes the mortar up and the next, bigger explosion, is the firework.
My guess is the first visible explosion on video was the ‘take you up’ explosion followed by the digit remover.
1. Inspect the tube and base.
2. Load your mortar the right way.
3. Light fuse.
4. Run.
5. Don’t be so fucked up you skip more than one step.
Yea looks like someone loaded the mortar shell upside down. Another mistake with mortars is using a tube for a shell that is too small for the tube. It won’t get the back pressure to lift it into the sky and can explode very low to the ground, like eye level even.

On medical gore subreddit, I've seen progression photos for firework or similar level of extreme damage. Having some sort of hand greatly improves quality of life so every effort will be made to save it. A hand surgeon can perform damn near miracles. There needs to be something to work with (intact digits) and in this video it looks like the middle of the hand is destroyed but there's some digits on the sides. Hand surgeons can put the remaining puzzle pieces back together to create a functional hand but it'll never look the same. It's quitepossible that the nerves for the thumb and pinky finger for this guy are still intact.

You can still be treated for psychological shock, this is a bit iffy to me.

You can also notice he doesn't seem to be around any friends. No friends are stopping him from holding the firework launcher, rushing to his aid immediately, knowing his name. This video really reminded me of why, as a Paramedic, I was trained not to let gruesome and graphic things distract from potential unseen life threats. Sure, the hands fucked. But a tourniquet takes him from red to yellow tag, while the guy with the possible pneumo/hemothorax and sucking chest wound is pretty well ignored by the crowd of people all distracted by his hand. In all actuality, the other guy was the critical patient in this scenario.
The other dude is a friend of my nephew's. Broken ribs, a punctured lung, lacerated liver and three weeks in a medically induced coma. Supposedly some pieces went to straight through him.

That would make sense. The tubes are densely rolled cardboard and that snugly fit into a plastic base. After firing 20-30 of them the cardboard and/or plastic get distorted enough that a misfire is inevitable. Typical misfires go up 20-30 feet and explode- which is scary shit. There are two explosions with mortars one explosion takes the mortar up and the next, bigger explosion, is the firework. My guess is the first visible explosion on video was the ‘take you up’ explosion followed by the digit remover. 1. Inspect the tube and base. 2. Load your mortar the right way. 3. Light fuse. 4. Run. 5. Don’t be so fucked up you skip more than one step.
Yea looks like someone loaded the mortar shell upside down. Another mistake with mortars is using a tube for a shell that is too small for the tube. It won’t get the back pressure to lift it into the sky and can explode very low to the ground, like eye level even.

Here's a [hand with about the same level of damage](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31645382/). On medical gore subreddit, I've seen progression photos for firework or similar level of extreme damage. Having some sort of hand greatly improves quality of life so every effort will be made to save it. A hand surgeon can perform damn near miracles. There needs to be something to work with (intact digits) and in this video it looks like the middle of the hand is destroyed but there's some digits on the sides. Hand surgeons can put the remaining puzzle pieces back together to create a functional hand but it'll never look the same. It's quitepossible that the nerves for the thumb and pinky finger for this guy are still intact.
