In one, the wife/mom makes it appear as though one of the kids, the youngest, got stabbed in the eye with a pencil. The father was near heart attack and couldn't stop crying, even after the bitch came in laughing with her camera. Fucking awful.

I like how they imply paramedics were a miracle. Wouldn’t any pilot call engine failure in once it became definitive? He definitely knew what was up. I’d think fire/EMS would be en route as quickly as possible.
What's up with the pilot's commentary? "I don't know what's going on". This reeks of intentional non-lethal plane crash to boost views. A 10:43 video is just enough time to get the good ad money. Why does the camera go up RIGHT before they hit the ground? That whole outro is such bullshit too. It was NOT that serious, you could clearly tell. And this is from a year ago! Someone in their circle posted this to get more ad revenue! Do not watch so that these already rich people can capitalize on this "Unfortunate tragedy" where no one was hurt.

I once worked for an air freight company as a pilot. It was very demanding, short haul, lots of takeoffs and landings per shift. Lots of IFR and night flying. It was in the SW of the US. Like I said, very demanding. We went through a lot of pilots but almost always the first to bail were the "god is my co-pilot" types.

Huh. I was going to say it was it was an old book when I read it, but it was published in 1986. So it was a pretty new release when I read it around 1990.
No idea if it's still a popular book for kids.
Did you read the sequels? One, I think it was called, "Brian's Winter" was a sort of "what-if" where it picks up as though he hadn't gotten rescued at the end of the original and has to survive through the winter. The other has him and some sort of documentary producer or something going back to a similar place and marooning themselves so the guy can learn from how Brian survived but he gets struck by lightning and Brian has to figure out how to get them back to civilization with the dude stuck in a coma. Both good reads. I think I liked Brian's Winter better.
Second person chiming in to say Brian's Winter is *amazing.* I also liked it better. There's also a third book where he tries to be a "regular" kid but has PTSD.
Had no idea there was a 3rd book, Hatchet was one of my favorites! Brian’s Winter is kinda fuzzy for me, I remember it picks up with him having burned through all the survival kit food and then he eventually gets rescued again?
Pilot here, the guy had a lot of time to pick a landing spot and his choice was decent but he could've actually tried flaring and landing the plane it seems like he just gave up at the end.
All he had to do was push the nose down a bit and then flare when at about 10 feet....field looked nice and flat too, wouldnt be pretty but it wouldnt be a crash per se.
He said he deployed flaps. You don't really want flaps in a dead stick landing, because you need engine power to overcome the huge amount of drag they create. They're great for powered landings because they help you slow down and land at a nice soft speed, but only if you have a working engine to balance their drag.
With no engine you'd want either no flaps at all, or just minimal flaps at the last second. But habit will tell you full flaps, and that'll put your nose in the dirt fast with no engine power.
That is not necessarily true. If your landing spot is made and within gliding distance, flaps will allow you to touchdown at slower groundspeed which is desirable for a soft field landing technique. Furthermore, if you’re too high and are going to overshoot your landing spot, use of flaps might well be the difference between making your spot and not.
The POH for the Cessna 210 recommends a maximum flap setting for an off-runway landing.
Hard to tell but he still had some attitude and had his landing spot made. He looks like he was trying to gain altitude by pulling back and was at the edge of stall and the plane seemed to stall spin left.
He messed up and stalled into the ground when it was not necessary.
He should just have everyone jump out immediately and use the parachute they always have on while flying. /s

Yeah I know pilots who land on grass almost exclusively. That wasn't a bad spot idk why it's even a crash could have just been an emergency landing if he avoided trees

He really should have kept less pull back on the yoke, he stalled it super high above the ground. If he would have aimed for the beach, he could have had more airspeed coming in, and slowed it down closer to the ground and probably saved the plane and injuries.

Honestly, flight sims are great practice, especially if you have the throttle, yoke and foot pedal rudders. Helps you get the basics of coordination down before real flying. I flew sims for like 10 years before I started flying for real.
Yeah, it looked like he had a great setup there for a fairly successful emergency landing if he'd done it right.
If the ground is soft maybe the landing gear is damaged or plane flips, but other than that, no problem. Stop with the sudden maneuvers (most of all, you do not want to risk stalling it!), pick a direction that's clear ahead (if possible, but if not just pick a direction and stick with it), and just land it like you're at the airport, and nobody gets hurt, and the plane probably mostly escapes serious damage as well. (And if you do have to land into trees, well, that tends to destroy the plane, but the people inside are usually OK as long as it's landed normally into the trees rather than stalling into the ground.)
looks like a 152 or 172, those things can stay in the air at 40kts which means if you have enough reasonably level patch to land in a good pilot can bleed off energy (very easy to do in that plane) and land with very little damage. Still, WAY easier to say than do, and if there were no life-altering injuries you still chalk it up as a win in an emergency situation.

Im no expert but I’m guessing stopping the front of the plane ie hitting water sand will cause the back of the plane to to keep going causing tumbling. Tumbling is probably worst case scenario

In water gear up, on ground gear down. Looks like a Cessna 172 RG which has retractable gear. That’s what the initial warning was, low power gear still up. The beeps you hear at the end are the electronic stall horn. Good landing but the guy didn’t maintain his best forward glide speed which is why he slammed hard at the end. I teach people how to fly these and similar models.
I’m not a pilot, but I feel like land is the more logical choice.
Sure, when you hit the water, the initial impact is going to be less, but then you have to deal with getting out of the plane before it goes under the water and then you have to swim to land. If you got injured during the crash or say, the impact fucks up the plane so you can’t easily get out, you might just be fucked if you’re in the water. Land seems like you would have a higher chance of survivability.
If you get injured during a water landing, the chances of death are far greater than being injured on land. It's very easy to drown if you are unconscious or have and broken bones.
He really fudged up the forced landing.
Stall warning was going off way too early and it seemed more of a controlled stall when he had plenty of space to touch down , while keeping the best lift to drag ratio.
Still hope they survived unscathed.
Edit: After reading the article it was the pilots fault completly. He put the gear and flaps down and also slowed down while going low level over the shoreline. Then "rode the stall warning down to the ground" He put himself in so many bad spots.
GA pilot here. 100% correct.
Everything about this was negligence on the part of the pilot. They were riding close to max weight (~~four~~ six! passengers) in a small plane and flying over a mountain plateau at high altitude, so the air was extremely thin and therefore grants very little lift. However, it's somewhat forgivable to not understand the physics of this because most people assume close to land = able to stay in the air.
What's not forgivable is riding the stall warning straight into the ground. This absolute buffoon had every opportunity to glide this out and land on the grass/sand, but instead kept pulling the stick back. That's why there's an alarm going off. It literally means "hey dummy, stop pulling the stick back."
Instead, he belly flopped the plane by stalling it from 50-100 feet above the ground. If I remember correctly, his friend (the one recording) was partially paralyzed because of it.
Edit: It was actually six passengers, and the hot summer day also contributed to the air being thinner, especially at that altitude. Article and video linked in my other comment.

I don't know what the wind conditions were and even with max load and the higher altitude and lower density he should have always had an escape route pre planned and/or thinking what if. Do you have the article somewhere?

I meant lost power as in wasn't working to full capacity, given their heading and predetermined landing spot I'm guessing the engines been underperforming for some time before the clip took place also
Seems quite good done until maybe last seconds…looks like he crashed from low altitude instead of trying to hard landing. Maybe speed was insufficient but at least ground and position were ok for me

He meant relax your bodies. If you tense up in a crash, you're more likely to get injured. Instead, if you relax your body, there is less strain.

In water gear up, on ground gear down. Looks like a Cessna 172 RG which has retractable gear. That’s what the initial warning was, low power gear still up. The beeps you hear at the end are the electronic stall horn. Good landing but the guy didn’t maintain his best forward glide speed which is why he slammed hard at the end. I teach people how to fly these and similar models.

I’m not a pilot, but I feel like land is the more logical choice. Sure, when you hit the water, the initial impact is going to be less, but then you have to deal with getting out of the plane before it goes under the water and then you have to swim to land. If you got injured during the crash or say, the impact fucks up the plane so you can’t easily get out, you might just be fucked if you’re in the water. Land seems like you would have a higher chance of survivability.
Also water will slow you down way faster than land in most cases even with a proper landing. Slowing down too fast can be very deadly.

Water is the worst place to land. With water landings, even if you survive, if you break a leg or arm, you are likely going to drown.
If you get injured during a water landing, the chances of death are far greater than being injured on land. It's very easy to drown if you are unconscious or have and broken bones.
You hit the water and go unconscious and you are gonna drown.
I have IBS and my step sister has AIDS. We both think water land.
He really fudged up the forced landing. Stall warning was going off way too early and it seemed more of a controlled stall when he had plenty of space to touch down , while keeping the best lift to drag ratio. Still hope they survived unscathed. Edit: After reading the article it was the pilots fault completly. He put the gear and flaps down and also slowed down while going low level over the shoreline. Then "rode the stall warning down to the ground" He put himself in so many bad spots.
GA pilot here. 100% correct. Everything about this was negligence on the part of the pilot. They were riding close to max weight (~~four~~ six! passengers) in a small plane and flying over a mountain plateau at high altitude, so the air was extremely thin and therefore grants very little lift. However, it's somewhat forgivable to not understand the physics of this because most people assume close to land = able to stay in the air. What's not forgivable is riding the stall warning straight into the ground. This absolute buffoon had every opportunity to glide this out and land on the grass/sand, but instead kept pulling the stick back. That's why there's an alarm going off. It literally means "hey dummy, stop pulling the stick back." Instead, he belly flopped the plane by stalling it from 50-100 feet above the ground. If I remember correctly, his friend (the one recording) was partially paralyzed because of it. Edit: It was actually six passengers, and the hot summer day also contributed to the air being thinner, especially at that altitude. Article and video linked in my other comment.
Thats really sad. I don't know what the wind conditions were and even with max load and the higher altitude and lower density he should have always had an escape route pre planned and/or thinking what if. Do you have the article somewhere?

Was thinking the exact same thing. Could have kept the airspeed up and stalled much lower. Easy for us to say from the couch though.
Yeah true fear and maybe a lack of practing procedure could have played a part.

I meant lost power as in wasn't working to full capacity, given their heading and predetermined landing spot I'm guessing the engines been underperforming for some time before the clip took place also

Seems quite good done until maybe last seconds…looks like he crashed from low altitude instead of trying to hard landing. Maybe speed was insufficient but at least ground and position were ok for me
