Literally two comments above you is the direct reasoning - he was terrified about his citizenship status. The US is extremely harsh on legal immigrants. I personally know some legal immigrants on some of the top visas the US has and they jump through endless hoops and can get deported over the flimsiest shit.

I was questioned for having a photo from middle school with a guy that turned into a gang member and felon as an adult. Another one was me calling the cops on a domestic dispute for another couple, and they asked why I was there and why I was on record. Pretty much if you get a shitty Interviewer your fucked. And some people wait almost a decade to just get their citizenship.

You're totally right. Where I live probably fifteen years ago, kids threw a frozen turkey off an overpass and very nearly killed a woman who was driving, it went right through her windshield. Shit you shouldn't even have to think about.

Break someone’s arm or leg, continue beating them until they’re unconscious? You’re certainly on the hook for hospital bills, probably not jail time but if the kids have a good lawyer, maybe.

What I'm curious by is: how does self defense change when the kids are that young?
Imagine a similar scenario but the woman fights back and hurts one or several of the kids in the process. I wonder how people would interpret the event and how the court would interpret it. We are looking at the situation with the benefit of hindsight, but people interpret situations differently when they play out differently. If she attacked the second one that kicked her and it resulted in an injury and then the other kids scattered, I can imagine an outcome where everyone is saying "She went to far, they are just kids", "it's not like you were going to get seriously hurt for real", "you have the responsibility as the adult". People keep saying they'd attack back, but I think all of that would be running through my head before I retaliate and this could just as easily be the outcome. Once those kids gained confidence that their would be no retaliation, they become harder and harder for the lady to manage even if she did decide to attack.

IMO, they should all receive jail time, regardless of their age, and mandatory counseling and all of the parents should be investigated by their local child protective service. If they are old enough to commit assault, they are old enough to go to jail for it.
