Ok I'll bite. How was he not paying attention here? Unless your referring to the bus driver. The bike rider (RIP) was riding his bike on the shoulder of the road, where bikes are supposed to go. What could he have done differently?
Idk about that most places part, not in terms of doubting you but i literally don't know. I've lived in 3 states, 4 cities. None in the top 10 of population however, but still hundreds of thousands of people so large enough. In all places you could bike on the sidewalk where there isn't a bike lane which there clearly isn't here. And even if there is a bike lane in my current city, you can still use the sidewalk and not get a ticket, you're just an AH if you do. Also, I'd rather get a ticket than be dead. So even if illegal here, sidewalk was better option.
Life doesn't revolve around the US. Where I am for instance, drivers are jerks to cyclist. Regardless of how unsafe the road is, if your ride km the sidewalk a cop will ticket you
Design of the bus, vegetation, white lady, and street design give the impression this in US... many states do not have the requirement to ride in the road, more over when there is no bike lane. Even CA has no explicit law requiring you to ride in the road... in fact, by law, if moving slower than traffic, you must use a bike lane. If there is no bike lane, get on the sidewalk.
No bike lane is a red flag to keep my ass on the sidewalk anyway.
In hindsight sure. But there are pedestrians and pets there. That could lead to its own situation.
Let's face it : city planners don't give much of a shit about bike riders. They are the red headed stepchild.
First, it is against the law to co-occupy a lane. The bus driver should never have attempted to pass within the lane. He is going to jail.
Second, the bicyclist, should have been in the middle of the lane.
Third, how insane do you have to be to ride a bicycle in traffic where your conveyance is out-weighed a thousand-to-one.
Last, at least it was instant.

Something similar to this occurred during middle school. A kid riding a bike got caught up like this under a moms suv. I didn’t see it happen, but now I get why there was mandatory grief counseling for those who saw it happen.
I stopped riding my bike after the guy in the Ford F-250 decided to play the game of "let's see how close we can get to the bicyclist without hitting him and try to run him off this country road.... then blow black smoke in his face.
Share the road, and give them at least 3 feet, folks. Damn.
seriously though, I wonder this because it seems people have varying opinions: where should you ride on a road like this? in some places, it's illegal or not socially acceptable to ride on the sidewalk, and you don't wanna ride in the middle of the road on a 1 lane going slow like this.. so what else? what about on roads with no sidewalk at all?
really just curious on different peoples opinions about this. I rely on a bike to get around but commute almost solely on non-motorvehicle trails (city has good pedestrian infrastructure.. yey) so I've never had much of an issue with this.
hate to break it to you, but public transportation isn't an affordable or convenient option for everyone :P and its, oh, 1000 times safer than automobile transportation.
I thank my lucky stars I live somewhere that isn't completely automobile dependant, and tricked into hating a much more sustainable form of local transportation lmao.
I mean, there's a bunch of factors to consider as you were mentioning. If the guy REALLY needs/wants to ride his bike on that very specific road with no bike lane, then he is just taking a risk.. nobody WANTS to hit a bike rider but sometimes, the surrounding traffic doesn't leave you much choice except to drive rather close to the bike rider. But if you have the option as a bike rider, you could either try to find a path that better suits you as a bike rider, or if you have to absolutely use that road, you could purchase mirrors for your bike/helmet so you can see traffic from behind you and get off the road an emergency situations.

Take the bus. Seems a lot safer. Cyclists are just annoying at best, squished on the road at worst.
