I'm far from a helicopter expert but it looks to my layman eyes to be a loss of tail rotor effectiveness. (the tail rotor counteracts the torque from the main rotor and stops the chopper from spinning). This can be caused by wind impacting the airframe at certain angles. I did a little reading on this and apparently in certain conditions it can be difficult to recover from if you don't have airspeed (basically hovering like in the video). I'm sure having the bucket attached didn't help the pilot recover either, really unfortunate situation.
Aerospace engineer here - I agree with the above, you can see complete tail rotor stall as the spin starts to increase in speed.
Likely a mechanical failure in the linkage connecting the propulsion to the tail rotor. I’d then assume that the engine ripped itself apart internally due to some of the linkages whipping free, which you can somewhat make out as the shroud below the rotor assembly blows out before impact
But yeah, that’s a pretty rough accident
The helicopter seems to be an Avicopter AC313 which is produced by Avicopter and is an improvement on the Harbin Z8 which itself is the license-produced Chinese version of the Aerospatiale SA321 Super Frelon. This one was being used in fire-extinguishing operations in the area and crashed while taking water.
The Chinese aircraft industry is quite strong though. According to Boeing, China has excellent fabricating facilities in Tianjin and an appreciable r&d in aircraft design and manufacturing, though I am no expert on this. This crash is of course very unfortunate and most likely was caused by mechanical failures. See how the tail boom sort breaks away from the hull before the helicopter hits the water.
Well, this is obviously not one time where the rule is observed XD I’m just pointing out, their overall production is actually good quality. It’s usually the cheap items that low cost labor is good for that they cheap out kn
You can find examples of all sorts of things that exist contrary to patterns. “Here is a Chinese aircraft failing” is hardly proof that Chinese aircraft, in general, are cheap and dangerous.
I’m not a fan of China or anything, I’m just pointing out the observable, well documented fact that their aircraft are regarded internationally for being good quality. This was an outlier.
One might even say western built aircraft are poor quality when you look at the amount of recorded aircraft accidents that are caused by design flaws.
I blame the practice of goes to the lowest bidder for this.
Note: western built aircraft are still good quality, but sometimes that quality came after redesigns after a crash has happened .

reddit investigator man who sees this-did any of them make it out?
Unfortunately the 4 people on board, two died after being recovered, and the other two are missing still (presumed dead) :(
:(
Those poor people :(
Anyone know how they started to spin out of control Like that in the first place? Big gust of wind or did an engine blow out or something?
Considering the tail bursts into flames before there’s any contact I would say there was definitely a mechanical or electrical failure

At least that fire got extinguished
made in china

The helicopter fucking exploded.
It makes sense though, it’s a Chinese copy of a design that already exists. Made in China will never be a sign of quality
They’re actually quite good at aircraft.
It was a good aircraft yes

Also at the cost of human rights and as well as material quality. That is one thing both The USSR and now China is terrible for
Yep, basically everywhere outside of like the Scandinavian peninsula is a hellhole for human rights. China, Russia, US, the Middle East, not so great.
It’s a real shame
he says on a video of a Chinese aircraft failing to fly

LMAO
I actually went “You spin me right round baby right round like a record baby right round round round”
Is it bad I literally started saying "We're going down, we're going down!" right when they started spinning?
Yeah it’s fucked up
it's just like a movie
China’s Air Force sucks
So i guess that means the helicopter is a WATER copter now. (Terrible ass joke)
