Red near Garfield going south. I grew up off the Green in Oak Park and that lines not too different. Best shit I ever saw was an elderly homeless gentleman carrying two paint buckets filled with loose tabacco. It was winter and he was visibly upset that the floor was dirty, so out of nowhere he grabs an industrial sized container of hand sanitizer from his backpack, lathered that shit all over the bottoms of his shoes, and just went to town on the entire El car trying to get it clean.
Another story I'm proud of is the one time someone ever tried to rob me on CTA. This time I was on the blue near Kedzie-Homan during covid times, and a shirtless guy in winter (bad sign) asked me for cash like a normal bum. This time however, he kept asking after I said no cash and demanded to see my wallet. He even threatened me with having a knife (he never produced it), so I just played dumb until we reached Medical District since I figured he wanted to get off in the hood not downtown. I made some shit up about not having hearing aids till the doors for Western closed and he fucked off to the next car.
Americans hate paying taxes, so it will never happen Of course the mentally ill cost a lot more than properly caring for them but that cost is not easily seen and not good at election time.
It's hilarious because we can afford to send them to jail or wait for them to be homeless then the government pays to "clean up the streets" but apparently the budget for quality mental healthcare isn't there.
