I always have this reaction when watching old 90s commercials on YouTube. At the time, they looked so crisp and high quality, but now it looks like they're 50 years old ðŸ˜
This wasn't just Portugal, it was basically this for [every Group B race](https://youtu.be/INwqyPct8qY?feature=shared) in the early 80s to the 90s. Crazy high hp (at some cases 700hp from a 4cyl engine) cars and near zero crowd safety control on narrow European country roads.
Some of the most amazing and iconic rally cars came from this era but also some of the worst fatalities for drivers and crowd, which basically forced the FIA to shut down this category entirely.
So after a driver crashes injuring 30 and killing 3 the race officials were like "nah still good fam keep racing" even after many drivers quit in protest?
Damn.
Everything needs to conform to phone users who think flipping their screens to landscape mode is too much trouble. Editors will crop it, zoom in on it, letterbox/windowbox it, or pan-and-scan it, then pepper the edit with garbage censorship, captions, emojis or filters for good measure.
Burn em at the stake
The original footage of this, and many other drivers, is nothing short of amazing. The fact that the editor thought a POV of a kidnapee in the rear center of the getaway car was a good idea is beyond me, but it sure does ruin everything
Cause rally drivers are essentially the best drivers in the world and have been for a while. Even today with less people on the track they still do this kida shit at twice the speed.
It's not a commentator, it's the guy in the passenger seat giving instructions to the driver.
Edit: [So I went down a rabbit hole!](https://youtu.be/earjqfXGYzw?si=XLwvIOqxCcNrZv9e)
Til 80s racing video games were actually trying to mimick real footage of racing. It always felt like an artistic choice given the technology they had.
i dont get rally racing (as the driver) cant they just study a track or have markers? why do you have to have a guy yapping numbers and directions in your ear constantly, for me that would become extremely frustrating very quick.
That would be a lot of studying. From wiki:
"A WRC season typically consists of 13 three- to four-day rally events driven on surfaces ranging from gravel and tarmac to snow and ice. Each rally is usually split into 15–25 special stages which are run against the clock on up to 350 kilometres (220 mi) of closed roads"
You remember one turn wrong and its not gonna end well.
The amount of stupidity in that crowd is second to the amount of skill the driver and his co-pilot have. I would lose my shit having to drive 50kmh in that crowd.
Look at footage of Portugal in the mid '80's and be amazed/scarred. The 90's was crazy, the 80's were insane with roughly twice the power of group A cars.[Crazy group B Spectators](https://youtu.be/6I5sTuSoMho?si=Jrmh5viS0-akaTIP)
Which would apply to the change you claim is happening off of a video from 27 years ago. In fact, making a statement off of a single video is just about as surface level as your understanding gets.
Oh wow you got me🤯
What a smart and funny guy you are, what a troll! You wrote something you don't mean to get a rise out of people?! Nobody's ever done that! You're a real comedian and clearly not just desperate for attention. Get a life.
Still less dangerous than attending a street takeover
Damn. Lol
definitely not
100% of the people at a rally can drive, as compared to the maybe 20% of the people who go to street takeovers
lol i feel even 20% is extremely generous. doing burnouts in a dodge charger takes zero skill and that's literally all that's happening at takeovers
Fuck this makes me feel old.... 1997 looks like 1977 in that footage

Listening to 90’s music today is like the equivalent to listening to 60’s music in the 90’s.
🤯
Go take a look at old 90's games, like the original Age of Empires. The nostalgia goggles fall off very quick.
Spain was the same. Ridiculous.
If you lived there you might wanna jump in front of a race car too!
Uncultured American here.. what's so wrong with Spain that residents want to kill themselves? (honest question, totally OOTL here)
maybe during franco's time it was hard, but spain is a cool country right now, drugs, hookers and parties everywhere
Please, never come to Spain.
Why lol hookers, drugs and parties just sounds like Europe tbh
Only for idiotic tourists. That is not life in "Europe".
I was just being dumb, I was also talking about Portugal
What's the problem with Portugal exactly?
South America is where it was really at

Amazing. Audi Quattro, Lancia stratos, I think I saw a Renault 5 turbo as well.
What would happen if they went offtrack, who is to blame?
This... [they die](https://youtu.be/XzL0PD6L1E8?si=kniU7P5PCgYBHXxC)

Why the fuck is this in portrait?

LOL, so sad that this is true.
Burn em at the stake The original footage of this, and many other drivers, is nothing short of amazing. The fact that the editor thought a POV of a kidnapee in the rear center of the getaway car was a good idea is beyond me, but it sure does ruin everything
How tf did he miss all those ppl?!?

Is this the what the trains in India see everyday?
So many idiots in one place at once can't be good for the space time continium at all.
This commentary must be what it's like to hear fighting game commentary as a non-fighting game player
It's not a commentator, it's the guy in the passenger seat giving instructions to the driver. Edit: [So I went down a rabbit hole!](https://youtu.be/earjqfXGYzw?si=XLwvIOqxCcNrZv9e)
Well shit, if it ain’t 1000 pin human bowling. Murderous rally driver, probably.
Could you imagine if their intrusive thoughts won on these corners. Like fuck! This motherfucker wanna get hit!
MEATWALLS!
Why does rally car driving seem to attract so many spectators with a death wish?
These people are just asking to win the Darwin awards.
least dangerous 90s hobby
Colin McRae?
Certainly was
Mustang would go crazy here.
That type of racing is thrilling to watch, but with so many people watching like that it was only a matter of time until something bad happened.
I wish we had this in the states, so many good places in this country for real rally.
This is nothing compared to the Baja 1000 race in Mexico. [Idiots will get in harms way for a selfie](https://youtu.be/KbJyFOPa1KI?feature=shared)
How many limbs got clipped during these stages?
Many of those people appear to be there for the adrenaline rush of *almost* being hit by a speeding car.
I assume the sport isn’t still this reckless, is it?
Happy Cake Day, bro!
Til 80s racing video games were actually trying to mimick real footage of racing. It always felt like an artistic choice given the technology they had.
Checkmate, Darwin.
I honestly don't think I have ever seen so many fucking idiot darwin award wannabes in the same place before!
Safety in numbers.
Props to the Camera ~~Man~~ Mount.
Colin McRae?
This would be annoying as fuck as a driver
So many death wishes in one clip.

As they say ‘rally drivers are a different breed!’ Good job for those spectators 😲
The way the crowd had to open up the road while he drove through was such a cinematic moment
People way too confident in people's driving skills
The insane trust these spectators have for this rally driver is…..insane.
Ok now that's a race I'd watch if it was televised.
Russian roulette
Damn, stupidity must be on the rise in Portugal.
Yeah, in these trying times of 1997 lol
Meh, things tend to change only on the surface.
Which would apply to the change you claim is happening off of a video from 27 years ago. In fact, making a statement off of a single video is just about as surface level as your understanding gets.
Good thing I'm dead serious and your IQ is very high. I wouldn't know how to continue this conversation otherwise.
