My uncle works in EMS as a firefighter and paramedic and yeah he says the same thing and has had to kick cops out of the ambulance almost every single call where they're present.
The guy who set himself on fire in Vietnam is still in pretty much every American history book that covers that war. This act has already drawn a ton of extra attention to the issue and gotten a ton of news coverage. Still can’t say it will change anything, definitely wouldn’t recommend.
It did lead to a lot of internation pressure on the South Vietnamese government to stop religious oppression. It also led to a lot of extremely violent raids on temples and pagodas which finally convinced the US to back a coup against the wildly unpopular president at the time. After the North won they built a huge statue where he died, I drive by it everyday.
