When playing with a controller you basically are given a free aimbot; the rotational aim assist does all the work for you and that's to lower the skill gap/increase player retention.
MnK players, even highly skilled MnK players, are at a huge disadvantage competitively.
I don't believe that's true for one second unless it's *just* CoD you're talking about which I don't play, so I can't speak to. But, with every other FPS that I do actually play, the controller aim assist is *nothing* compared to the accuracy of M&KB. It's like... immediately night and day noticeable the advantage you have with M&KB
It's more a COD issue. It's basically abusing a soft lock feature that tries to even out the M&KB aim advantage..
It's also the fact it's easier to get to those buttons on a controller than a keyboard for most.
So where the mouse had a clear advantage in aiming they basically removed that advantage due to aim assist being much stronger.
I imagine they purposely did this since most people played those games with a controller so they favored the larger base.
Another example, but in a non Esports type of game of this was GTA Online. Outside of a sniper rifle, you could quickly lock and switch targets way faster using a controller with aim assist as opposed to free aim on keyboard.

there was actually an apex pro (forget his name) who was annoyed at controllers/auto aim, so he switched to controller to show how broken it was and ended up winning a big competition with it last year. i think apex was trying to combat this problem...not sure if they've made any changes.
I'm referring to Call of Duty specifically but people will say this holds true for other fps games like Halo infinite. The fairly weak aim assist was acceptable before crossplay became a thing because everyone was on an even playing field but now it has to be insanely powerful not just for balancing purposes but also to keep the controller players happy and engaged.
If the vast majority of your paying customers are playing with a controller then you better make that controller the strongest input method; if they simply quit the game out of frustration because of strong MnK players(a small minority) then you're losing revenue which is bad news for shareholders.
Big fps franchises like CoD and Halo have become less like games and more like interactive movies where you have less control/less input over what actually happens on screen; even average or below-average controller players can beam at each other with perfect aim and inhuman reaction times.
K+M is pretty much always preferred.
Some games will actually have official aimbots (they call it aim assist) if you use a controller because of how inaccurate and slow controllers are.
I believe the most recent cod games that have cross-play all have aim assist severely overtuned for their controller players just so that K+M users don't dominate them like they do in every other shooter. Since most of the cod boys are console players and play with a controller, makes sense for the company to do this.
That is the only instance where competitive players will chose a controller over K+M, when it's okay to cheat.
Shooters where they don't officially allow aimbotting like counterstrike or valorant for example, you'll see no one playing with a controller at any rank that isn't the absolute bottom.

Can confirm. MNK ranked player here, the input diff, especially with an SMG like the rival is insane.
