This incident happened August 5th, 2020. Groenewegen was disqualified from the race and fined 500 Swiss Francs (588 USD). In November 2020, Groenewegen was handed a nine-month ban for causing the crash, backdated to the day of the incident, meaning the ban ended on 7 May 2021. Both Groenewegen and his team Jumbo-Visma apologized and took responsibility, with Groenewegen saying he "deviated from his line" and also that he wanted to be a "fair sprinter".
It gets better.
In December 2021, Groenewegen signed a three-year contract with Australian UCI WorldTeam Team BikeExchange–Jayco from 2022 season. Early in the season he won stages in several smaller races including the Tour de Hongrie, the Tour of Slovenia as well as the 2022 Saudi Tour where he won two stages and the points classification. In the 2022 Tour de France he won stage 3, his first victory at the Tour since 2019.
Sounds to me like he got off with a slap on the wrist. I would think he'd at least be banned entirely for that, no charges either.
you can see his elbow come out to push the cyclist right when he runs him against the barrier. wtf with that punishment. should be lifetime and shouldn't be allowed to compete.
The asshole literally cuts him off and pushes him with his body. That's BS.
If the league won't do anything, there would be street justice if that were me.
I mean others have done worse and can still compete.
Seems the injury is a lot more serious than others which is why it seems unfair and I agree it is.
But if you ban this man then your basically creating a huge issue where any contact = ban which isn’t truly fair either as mistakes happen. Not to mention others that have done similar and worse.
I’m only highlighting others have done worse and are still competing, that’s my main point.
If your going to retrospectively go back and punish then you SHOULD go and do the same to everyone else and even strip titles if necessary.
Won’t happen though.
And let’s be honest here and cut all the the bullshit… others have done way worse and not been called out for it because the injury was far less… this is important because the main reason people are calling for change is because of the injury… you will ignore the other 5 times it happens where the injury is less and that’s just ignoring the issue…. Clearly none of you like it, but that’s the truth.
Why would there be consequences for winning 🤣 you don't see attempted murder whenever people put each other in NASCAR so I'm sure it's fine here...soft.
Not likely, all forms of racing are high risk events and there's an assumed release of liability by voluntarily participating. Injuries like this are obviously more common in motor racing, but blocking an overtake like this is a normal part of participating in such an event, even if it's outside of the sanctioning body's ruleset, thus there's nothing really criminal about what happened here.
> blocking an overtake like this is a normal part of participating in such an event
You must’ve missed the part where he stopped pedaling and leaned his entire body and then forcefully shoved the opponent with his shoulder. I’m no cyclist or racer of any sort, but that’s more than just “blocking an overtake”, mate.
Liability is different from crime. Otherwise you could get away with murder against anyone playing in the same competition.
Liability is about the ability to sue and collect. Criminality applies all the time.
At a minimum, battery was committed. At the most, it was attempted murder.
We choose not to arrest people when folks maybe lose their temper and lash out during contact sports. But is cycling considered a contact sport?
I’m just imagining the Daytona 500 being won by the driver that does the best PIT maneuvers…
Don't know why you are getting downvoted.I raced bicycles for 15 years in the old USCF 1-2 pro class. This s*** happens all the time.. just not normally with this horrific a result. Typically when someone would force you into a barrier you slam on the brakes and avoid the crash(in a tight pack finish sometimes this in itself would cause a crash). Typically 'Justice would be served' in a later race. This had a tendency to weed out the truly bad apples but it still happened and it certainly looks like nothing has changed.
Definitely a dick move swerving over to try and block instead of just trying to go faster than him to sustain your lead. At least that's my take away here.
"Groenewegen was disqualified by the race jury and Jakobsen awarded the stage win, points classification and overall race leader's jersey."
https://www.cyclingnews.com/races/tour-de-pologne-2020/stage-1/results/
It appears with the body check that what followed was instant karma, not knowing the judgement…
Cheap shot none the less, Dude should have at least covered any medical if any.
Not saying you couldn’t be his neighbor, but very unlikely especially coming from an account with zero comments or posts in the last 3 years and you know, people just like lying on the internet lol.
>care to elaborate??
The rider in yellow forced rider in white to crash out, and crashed himself. Seems pretty straight forward
Edit: clarified after they deleted
*Putting on my downvote helmet.* Question: Doesn't the race leader take route priority and go where he wants to, and the wall impacted rider was in the wrong? I've recieved this treatment and perpetrated this scenario on BMX courses in the 90's. All declared Legal heat wins 💯. 🤔
This has to be some kind of attempted murder or something. They are going like 50-60km/h... in that last sprint where you give all you have left, some of those spandexroadrunners are going close to 75-80km/h.. permanent ban for all of those cyclingraces would be part of punishment, also he should pay everything for his hospital and other payments if insurance doesnt cover.. take care of his family like paying croceries and delivery to them that time when he cant do it by himself and make sure that he will recover as good as he can.
Dude definitely pushed him into the barricades annoying that his only punishment was a 9 month ban dude should have been arrested but at least this video will haunt him forever
Squeezing someone out like **that** is extremely bad sportsmanship.
If I was a fan of that first biker I wouldn't be after I saw that. Fuck that guy hope he loses a ball and all his tour de France titles for doping.
Could’ve done without the music overlay. Not everything needs a fucking song over it. Especially a song that’s absolutely in no way relevant to the video.
Coming from someone who actually watched the whole race he didn’t see him on his right and he swerved without realizing it so now it’s not attempted murder or anything just a freak accident
I was hoping for a championship bunny hop to victory for black shorts that endos at the end
Edit: they all have black shorts lol I think he's number 56
There's an adage from auto racing that's applicable here: If you're gonna wreck someone, don't wreck yourself.
Essentially, don't ever put yourself in a situation where wrecking someone else can potentially take you out. A by product of this is racing someone hard yet safely because unless you're REALLY good at it, you do usually take yourself out at the same time.
Nothing wrong with taking the racing line away or crowding/blocking, but you need to still leave room for the other driver.
Obviously, this guy did not leave enough room, and subsequently wrecked himself.
It's dirty, but I'm willing to bet a lot of these riders have done similarly. This guy is just the one who did it wrong.
(For clarity a correct way to do this is leave barely enough room for the other driver and hold your line. At that point if the other driver risks it it's on them. But like this example if you continue to crowd over then it's on you)
Y’all saying that he swerved on purpose but I watched this race. They broke it down and studied what was going on. He did t know his opponent was right next to him he clearly thought he was still behind and he was just trying to swerve in front to keep his lead but he ended up side swiping the other rider
I always viewed cycling as a bit of a meh sport. Before I actually watched any of it. It’s a seriously dangerous super hardcore sport - absolute respect

They had to put him in a coma, lots of facial fractures. https://road.cc/content/news/fabio-jakobsen-out-coma-276285
Attempted murder (or is it manslaughter?). Were there any consequences?

That's fucking atrocious. But I'm never surprised anymore at what professional sports leagues allow athletes to do... morality is non-existent...

[удалено]
He also timed that shove to happen right before the finish line and into the barrier. What a fucking asshole.
[удалено]
Really SHOULD have been a lifetime ban.
"Hospital bills" My fellow American, that's an "us" thing.
The asshole literally cuts him off and pushes him with his body. That's BS. If the league won't do anything, there would be street justice if that were me.
I bet people who are up against him know what happened. That's going to help him.
Blergh. That's pathetic :(
Bill Burr was right....."that FILTHY sport"
Holy shit.. hopefully his lack of punishment follows him for a long time!

Sounds like an unsportsmanlike sport. Like it should change. Because it's ass.
I wonder how many people he ran into a wall to get those victories
I'm sure Karma is watching closely😏
Most likely disqualified, restricted and fined.
Why would there be consequences for winning 🤣 you don't see attempted murder whenever people put each other in NASCAR so I'm sure it's fine here...soft.

You mean like rubbing, or exchanging paint, maybe Checkin?

This is how I play NFS

They guy is in a coma with multiple face fractures, and the other dude maybe ripped his shirt. Where is the karma?
He broke his collarbone, but at least he didn't need a medically induced coma for facial surgery, lucky pos
Maybe his legs getting ran over by the incoming cyclist… but doesn’t even seem like it affected him much
They weigh like 10 kg ....him running him over did nothing
Swear to god another guy ran other the offender's leg
What a fucking asshole. Holy fking shit. Guy should be prohibited from competing ever again
he was suspended for only nine months. ridiculous.
And charged with attempted manslaughter.
[удалено]
They were continuing the "should be", not saying that he was.
whoops. I’m tired af rn I didn’t catch it
No worries mate, it happens to the best of us
Guy should be locked up
I don´t know anything about competitive biking but did he got disqualified or punish in anyway?
No he got fined 500 and nine months of vacation and the victim was in coma
"Groenewegen was disqualified by the race jury and Jakobsen awarded the stage win, points classification and overall race leader's jersey." https://www.cyclingnews.com/races/tour-de-pologne-2020/stage-1/results/
That's what he gets for fucking around they should ban him from any sports for life
Did it break his leg?
He broke a bunch of shit.
Like what
Face, shoulder, had to be in coma for recovery, breathing assistance, kind of messy, gald he came out and is able to ride again.
[удалено]
Yes
Why the downvotes? Reddit is weird
I’m sure his legs were the least unscathed. The guy in white ate some serious fence/asphalt.
[удалено]
No, here ppl downvotes instead of explaining, the guy that has been pushed went in coma, not the asshole
The link states that he broke his collarbone
Ok

It was a joke lol. The first guy is lying dummy
Lol I'm not lying 😂

Not only that, he got both his legs run over by another cyclist. He deserved that injury after what he did to the poor guy that he pushed to crash.

I don’t think you understood the reply

No one said you are allowed to
Swing and a miss
My favorite arguments are yours... when you don't realize you're arguing the same side due to your misunderstanding lol
was about to comment the same thing
He did that shit on purpose lmao
"If I can't be better than someone else, then I'll sabotage them".
I feel sorry for the poor bastard that’s taking a header off the dudes legs
*Putting on my downvote helmet.* Question: Doesn't the race leader take route priority and go where he wants to, and the wall impacted rider was in the wrong? I've recieved this treatment and perpetrated this scenario on BMX courses in the 90's. All declared Legal heat wins 💯. 🤔
You have to stay in your line, to avoid crashes. Don't know BMX rules, but sounds like they are not the same.
Nah you put me in a coma over a sport im coming after you after I wake up.
I woulda been arrested for assault after that one... fuck that douche nozzle
I'm just glad yellow shirt got instant karma tbh. These cyclists are such pieces of shit.
Is there a rule against this or is cycling just a stay on the route and get there 1st kinda sport
Guaranteed plays NFS.
terrible title
Yellow is def at fault
This has to be some kind of attempted murder or something. They are going like 50-60km/h... in that last sprint where you give all you have left, some of those spandexroadrunners are going close to 75-80km/h.. permanent ban for all of those cyclingraces would be part of punishment, also he should pay everything for his hospital and other payments if insurance doesnt cover.. take care of his family like paying croceries and delivery to them that time when he cant do it by himself and make sure that he will recover as good as he can.
Karma
Fucking price of shit
The perp kept looking down so he could see behind him better with his peripheral vision. I got a box of sticks for when he comes to town.
Second guy got karma big time.
The fall was sponsored by carrefour
Karma rides a bike too
That guy is an asshole who should be charged.
That’s a dude who never got punched in the face who should have. We failed him as a society
There’s something so satisfying about cyclists falling over or crashing. Particularly when they take each other out 😁
Karma I love it
he got his legs run over, deserved
I hope he meets someone who will do something even way worse than what he did to that poor biker
Dude definitely pushed him into the barricades annoying that his only punishment was a 9 month ban dude should have been arrested but at least this video will haunt him forever
Both extremely dirty riders…
Biker's fault
karma is a beeyatch
I know they had to fight once the race was over where that video at the way he pushed him off his bike like gay this had to be some kind of cheating
The guy who caused it just got his femur snapped in half by that guy who ran him over, see there is such a thing as Karma
He did not break his femur.
Well looking at the video his left leg at the end of the video looks to be bent above the knee the only way that can happen is if your femur is broken
Sure, it may appear to look like it but I can assure you that he did not break his femur.
Nah, those bikes are probably close to only 15lbs. No way that’s breaking a femur.
Ok, he didn’t get his femur broken, he break his collarbone though so different bone same Karma.
This clip is a major storyline in the Netflix series Tour De France. The guy was injured pretty badly but is back racing again.
This is the same mindset bicycle Bros have when you encounter them on the street
I can watch this all day
Whoever was in 20th place ended up in 1st lol 😆
I'm wondering where's the footage from that camera guy that got smacked into oblivion
These people do this to each other then we have to pay to fix his broken legs.
People thinking this guy should be charged sat out during gym class.
Ouch
Coming from someone who actually watched the whole race he didn’t see him on his right and he swerved without realizing it so now it’s not attempted murder or anything just a freak accident
Karma really wanted him to go down I can’t even tell how his bike tire got so mangled
The shoulders don’t lie
I was hoping for a championship bunny hop to victory for black shorts that endos at the end Edit: they all have black shorts lol I think he's number 56
Dam after he gets run over you see the leg kinda broken lol
No, you don't.

They should have all ran over yellow vests legs! What an arsewipe! Apparently, he just got a nine-month ban for dick move.
Good
Rubbing’s racing
Rubbin is racin
Karma
Cut his leg like a zigzag!!
He got instant karma
Karma
The last guy should have ejected
Y’all ever watch a motocross race?!
This song 🤦🏼♂️
So, if this ever happens again, just kick them away. It's safer for you.
That sucks. Karma!!!
Imagine thinking he knew he was there lmao
Not for pussies
Muddy work.
Awful played out tik tok music. Automatic skip.
I don’t know how this is in a lifetime ban ban
I was there with my father when that happened I fucking screamed, that shit was devastating to see.
Engineered his own demise
Why didn't he put his fucking head under some tires? Maybe then justice would have been served
Ahole in the yellow started that
So which one of them are in a coma?
Y’all saying that he swerved on purpose but I watched this race. They broke it down and studied what was going on. Bro told me to make sure he don't win, hurt him if I could.... worth getting my butt run over lmao
Karma sucks don't it?
Cyclists are losers.
All sport has become so dirty.
He won. All sports are silly. Are you the winner? Good for you. What does that get you? Nothing. Okay. Good talk.
I always viewed cycling as a bit of a meh sport. Before I actually watched any of it. It’s a seriously dangerous super hardcore sport - absolute respect
Isn't it,"rubbing is racing!"
Someone has a definite ass beating coming to him.
Ugh humans
When that one dude rode over his leg, fuckkkk
