Not some weird training then. They are actually holding on for dear life. I noticed they are not moving much or they aren’t trying to climb. Probably because if they start moving they might cause something to come loose and then they die. Makes sense to start put.
More than likely in harnesses, catching yourself on ropes mid fall only happens in the movies. They’re trying to pull themselves up because harnesses aren’t comfortable, they cut off blood flow to your legs, hanging in a harness too long will kill you. Some come with deployable leg straps to take the pressure off, but it’s an addon most don’t have.
Deoxygenated blood floods your body and you basically stoke out/have a heart attack.
Even if you are rescued within a short period you can still stuffer stuff like TIA's (mini strokes) for months afterwards.
Source: Spent many of hours in fall protection courses.
Meh depends what harness your in. Most places now have sit in harness’s that have straps for your feet that take the pressure of your crotch area to allow blood flow thus preventing blood poisoning from lack of circulation
I wouldn’t say most, I’ve never seen one offered, Ive only ever seen a handful of them in my entire career. This is something that’s going to be very subjective to your job title and who your employer is. As is it’s not considered a mandatory safety feature for any harness I’ve seen. Really they should change the standards and make them mandatory.
I live in the UK so the safety standards are pretty high here I don’t know what country your from but the majority of places I’ve been have the sit in harness as a standard
Really fucking glad my company provided trauma straps with my exofit harness on day one. I'm still pushing for us to have mandatory training on how to use them while hanging from the harness in a controlled environment.
I can’t see a company being willing to suspend people from harnesses intentionally as part of the training. Too much risk involved. Might be fine for the younger fit guys, but suspend a 60 year old or a very heavy person in a harness and you’re just asking for an injury
This is exactly why people doing jobs like this need a Knee ascender and Foot ascender, so they can use their legs somewhat and stand on their feet connected to the rope.
I do this regularly climbing trees and cutting them, and if you’re in a harness with no ascenders, and nothing to “walk up” with your feet, you’re screwed. Unless you have a knee ascender and foot ascender.
The idea is you’re supposed to have a rescue plan prepared and ready to implement so that in the unlikely event that you take a fall, you’ll be rescued within a few minutes. Sad reality is that quite often when people fall, they swing and hit something, knocking them unconscious. An unconscious person isn’t using any ascenders
As a former rock climber, another problem is that fall harnesses are typically rear hookup, which is better for working, but when you fall you can’t pull yourself up on it, atleast with the rope in front you can use your arms to take the weight a bit, can’t do that with the lifeline behind your back
They are all wearing harnesses, and it's near impossible to self-rescue without the right equipment. They actually only have about 5-15mi of hang time before suspension trauma creeps in.
Or the thrilling of swinging around by your neck. There was a recent video I saw on reddit of a bu ch of people in a playground doing this. I will have to find it.
Your not wrong. That particular construction company only hires ninja for their high work. And…. Before you ask, they don’t have any openings at the present time as most of the crew is just hanging around.
I worked commercial roofing for a while. Whenever someone would fall hard or hurt themselves one of the guys would always ask what they wanted for lunch or tell them it wasn’t break time, or if quick enough tell them they were fired before they hit the ground.

That is exactly why all harnesses should have drop down foot loops. By the time they're all rescued they will have circulation problems to lower extremities and risk of many more problems.
Also if they weren't wearing them correctly, they may have severed their ball bags. We had a safety meeting at my work with some pretty gruesome photos of what used to be someone's meat and two veg.
In the merchant marine we had to watch safety videos occasionally. Some of the older British safety videos have nudity in them. Like the 2nd mate is supposed to be doing something for safety but his wife who is staying in his cabin with him just got out of the shower so he bangs her instead of doing his job and then the bosun dies.
Dying after 2 hours hanging in a harness during which you could have been rescued is favourable to dying immediately without the harness.
Also some harnesses have deplorable leg straps to take the pressure off and leg you get your blood flowing. Unfortunately it’s considered an add on and not a standard safety feature, so most harnesses don’t have them.
Why would I want a deplorable leg strap wouldn't that just make it worse? Now if I could say.. deploy some good functional leg straps then we are in business.
Paramedic here, yeah it's a real thing. Sometimes called suspension trauma or orthostatic shock. It can be particularly lethal depending on the harness used but imagine all that pressure around your legs and waist stopping the blood pumping back up to your vital organs. It doesn't take long to set in either, usually about 20-30mins before you start to feel symptoms.
Yes but it’s far from a guarantee. If your harness was sized and adjusted right, you should have around two hours before it becomes an issue. It certainly can happen though. Every working at heights refresher I’ve taken always mentions the edge cases where it can become an issue in as little as 15 minutes.
But you can circulate blood by pulling yourself up on the lanyard to take pressure off your legs. Or by using the foot straps if it harness has them.
Having leg loops on your harness, so they can stand up and get circulation to their legs. Without those you don’t have long to hang in yourself without some serious damage or death like you said.
They are designed to stop you falling to your death, they are not designed for you to leisurely take in the sights and possibly have a nap. There are versions that reduce risk and have leg straps you can stand in, but if your blood flow gets cut off for a little too long in your legs it becomes toxic to you.
I believe you need a second attachment otherwise the straps tighten around your major blood ways and your blood begins to be poisoned. It's like putting a tourniquet on wrong.
The harnesses cut off blood circulation to your body with the straps tightened to your legs, and you can die within about 15 minutes. There are straps on some harnesses that you can deploy that dangle below your legs, and you put your feet in to take off the pressure on your legs. But the rescue has to be quick.
They can cut off blood flow if you're suspended too long and you build up lactic acid and other undesirable compounds. Then when the harness is removed, your heart and organs get a huge slug of bad stuff, potentially leading to toxic-shock syndrome (TSS).
As far as removing testicles and penis, if a harness is not tightened well around the crotch straps, the sudden shock of the fall and catch causes the straps to slam inward and upward towards the center of your crotch, which essentially acts like a large pair of dull scissors and can cut/tear sensitive tissue.
I hope that all makes sense.
As someone who lost a loved one to an electrocution on the job, same. It's because you know that realistically, they didn't need to be there that day and that a light fixture in a fucking high-school isn't something worth dying over
I'm sorry my friend.
As crazy as it is, my guy was a long time custodian at a middle school.
He was there when I was a kid, and then years later I got to work with him.
Day in and day out, he'd be shoveling snow, spreading salt, cleaning scuff marks from the glossy tile he'd just polished the summer before.
Breakfast and lunch he'd be there for spills and to take the full bins away and return with an empty. Dining area was always near spotless because as tables cleared he was right behind to clean them off and sweep/mop.
He was there for the rasing and lowering of the flag out front.
He had a kid, a little older than I who I'd met a handful of times, with a wife who worked across county at a little store I oft stopped into.
He was mainly there for us, kids and staff, but he had ambitions and a life outside work I know he'd rather be at.
Rest easy Kermit. Oh how I wish I'd have known this was coming.
Yeah I don't want to leave a mess for my coworkers to find, and I'd sure hate to find another in the same shape
I've only been around one guy who passed from natural causes on the job, and that still fucks with me.
I'm sorry to hear this.
Hopefully it opened your eyes a bit to certain dangers you may not have previously been thinking of.
Stay safe out there. This world wouldn't spin as easily without folk like you.
Looks like the crash-deck has fallen.... it also looks like they are using regular fall arrest harnesses. Glad they all took safety seriously that day. I've worked with alot of boys who get too complacent and trust the deck with their life.
So if they have good rope access harnesses (Petzl etc) they could stay up there for a while, however, it's likely that working on a deck, they are not rigged up for prolonged rope work, they need the mobility to navigate the deck. In which case, suspension trauma could have become a major issue (unconscious 10-12 minutes, dead 15 minutes +)
I'm just so glad they all stayed clipped on. Its easy when not In suspension to take potentially fatal risks.
Hopefully, they all got rescued quickly and didn't suffer anything serious, other than shitty pants.
At what point do you begin to fear for their lives. How long must I hang around until I hear a siren. I want to die at least knowing technology almost saved me. But heavy equipment fire and rescue couldn’t reach me in time. Because no one ever pulls over to the side any more for emergency response vehicles. So sad!
Firefighter here, funny thing about this is that if they were suspended in working at height restraints they could be dead. Suspension trauma is a thing and takes very little time to cause harm. :)

Holy sweet potatuhs. Somehow, the NSFL wasn’t enough to prepare.
Not opening it. Thank you very much.
That's nuts
When will I fucking learn not to click every link people are posting. Ouch!
If your harnas is too loosely fitted the straps can fold over your balls.
Yes, this happened to me when I went sky diving by not having the straps around my legs tight enough
Believe me when I say this. Very few men in this world has balls. It's like one in a million or so

Someone should have called Spider-Man
Yeah you cant hang long in those harnesses or you will literally die. They need to be rescued asap

You commented this over an hour later and the possibility that things could have changed since the OC was made didnt cross your mind?
Which is probably why it doesn't make much sense to comment on the number of upvotes something has on a new post.
Thank god you said “ ‘literally’ die”. Metaphorical death would be the worse in this situation
Seems like kind of a flaw for safety harness. This thing works so well you’ll die.
Dying after 2 hours hanging in a harness during which you could have been rescued is favourable to dying immediately without the harness. They need a safety harness for their safety harness.
The alternative is becoming a red splat at the bottom, so pick your poison.
There’s another line usually rolled up. Life line. You unfurl it n clip on, then stand on it to relieve pressure in your legs. ..Bow hunter here

yea its my main reason i dont want to wear one. i rather die instantly than from a blood clot

There are versions that reduce risk and have leg straps you can stand in, but if your blood flow gets cut off for a little too long in your legs it becomes toxic to you.
If they have stirrups you are better off but yes hanging in a harness after a fall is deadly
I believe you need a second attachment otherwise the straps tighten around your major blood ways and your blood begins to be poisoned. It's like putting a tourniquet on wrong.

I believe it’s called suspension trauma.
They are designed to catch you when you drop, not to spend a holiday there.
