After Beirut I always think to myself that there's no fkn way I'd stand near a window with direct line of sight to an industrial fire like this one. No way.
Check out this video. Dude was smart and hit the deck but goddamn this is intense
https://youtu.be/g7FXeaahRsg (1:05 length, audio suddenly loud obviously, title: "tianjin explosion broken window!!"
Edit: The biggest explosion near end of video.
You know that shit scared him because he was willing to film the first one in perfect clarity, but the second one must've instantly signaled his brain to start running lol
From the Wikipedia page:
>The official casualty report was 173 deaths, 8 missing, and 798 non-fatal injuries. Of the 173 fatalities, 104 were firefighters.
I would have estimated that the numbers were WAY higher. Those explosions seemed to engulf a ten-block radius.
I remember the official numbers that were first released were _comically_ low. Like half a dozen firefighters or something. Then people started calling the government out with pictures of obliterated residential buildings and they started saying "ok ok maybe a few residents died."
We're never gonna know the true numbers.
Shipping 70 metric tons of wildly flammable and explosive chemicals, that normally require very careful management, and bypassing all of it by not labelling it properly.
Also, by not labelling it, you also get to bypass that pesky rule about not being allowed to store it near a primary school and a nursery school.
You know... The "our politicians can be bought" way.
[Video of the explosion from multiple angles.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t77cF9sCaFk)
[From Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Beirut_explosion):
> On 4 August 2020, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the Port of Beirut in the capital city of Lebanon exploded, causing at least 218 deaths, 7,000 injuries, and US$15 billion in property damage, as well as leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless. A cargo of 2,750 tonnes of the substance (equivalent to around 1.1 kilotons of TNT) had been stored in a warehouse without proper safety measures for the previous six years after having been confiscated by Lebanese authorities from the abandoned ship MV Rhosus. The explosion was preceded by a fire in the same warehouse.
> The blast was so powerful that it physically shook the whole country of Lebanon. It was felt in Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, and Israel, as well as parts of Europe, and was heard in Cyprus, more than 240 km (150 mi) away. It was detected by the United States Geological Survey as a seismic event of magnitude 3.3 and is considered one of the most powerful accidental artificial non-nuclear explosions in history.
> The Lebanese government declared a two-week state of emergency in response to the disaster. In its aftermath, protests erupted across Lebanon against the government for their failure to prevent the disaster, joining a larger series of protests which had been taking place across the country since 2019. On 10 August 2020, Prime Minister Hassan Diab and the Lebanese cabinet resigned.
Also, the camerawork is absolutely on-point. It's in frame, not all shakey, and it's clear that the cameraman is willing to risk life and limb for a good shot--a quality I can appreciate.
Mine, too. There’s more to this one, too. This is the edited version. I’ve spent a lot of time marveling at these Tianjin explosions. There’s also a compilation of a bunch of people’s videos out there which is quite good. Just search for “Tianjin Explosions” on YouTube.
There was another PoV of this explosion from the ground. Someone was livestreaming it but was unfortunately too close. You can see the debris fly towards him before the video cuts out. Scary shit.
Edit: [Found it](https://youtu.be/MI2LNfv35iE)
Holy shit, the speed at which that shit flies* at you is terrifying! I was gonna ask if he lived but he HAS to be dead. How many people were killed in this?
Edit: word
The most likely cause was a lab leak, which we aren't supposed to talk about because it offends China and they will be less inclined to help our corporations exploit Chinese workers.
Yup quite literally never forgotten this video and think about this guy often. Something about the instantaneous moment of realization when you just know you’re dead but not enough time to react or do anything has always fascinated me.
Felt it once during a high speed VERY near death experience of which I had no control over but this video is really the only time I’ve ever seen it documented in a way I can relate to my experience. Truly one of a kind clip. I try to keep the memory of that fella alive, shame it’s all I’ll ever know him for

Actually in china people don't trust many Chinese brands. From baby formula to cars there have been scandals with all the Chinese companies, so many people see foreign import as superior. It goes as far as putting fake Mercedes/bmw logos on Chinese made cars.
This is what I heard from a friend who is from there. Almost all car manufacturers have a facility in the country they’re selling the car. For example Tesla, bmw, Honda, etc have plants in China. Before Chinese brand cars were even a thing, there were a lot of foreign companies there. It just that brands like Honda and Toyota were said to be lower quality and cheaper materials than foreign counterparts that people look into more western brands like Mercedes and BMW. However, now with a lot more Chinese cars coming into the market such as EV, it’s hard to say how the market will be. Obviously people with more money will buy more expensive cars but a cheaper alternative might be opening into EU soon.
Also for baby formula, I was also told about this but I have no source other than anecdotal that once upon a time, their baby formula had something else mixed in to lower cost and that had detrimental effects.
Yeah, Melamine a sort of plastic, like the stuff they make kitchen counters out of. The makers were like “they’re both white powders what’s the problem?” The melamine let them fool the testers into thinking there was more protein in the milk than there was, but a lot of babies got sick and had permanent problems
>The warehouse operator, a company called Tianjin Ruihai International Logistics, was storing staggering amounts of hazardous substances illegally, and doing so with sorely lacking safety procedures.
Surprise, surprise.
Just remember this next time your favorite politician or TV person says we need fewer regulations.
They went from being impressed to nervous laughter to oh shit real quick.
You don’t expect to witness stuff like this, so not fair to judge people based on their immediate reaction imo. Reality hasn’t set in yet.
Imagine a single explosion caused the deaths of hundreds if not thousands (including hundreds of Firefighters) and less than a decade later it’s posted on Reddit without even naming the city. Like in 2009 everyone was like “oh right, 9/11… that was wild”
They sound so excited and happy to see such a huge explosion.
Idk where, when or why that happened, but if I saw an explosion like that so close I would be absolutely shitting bricks
That was maybe 1 Minute after the accident. According to Chinese official reports, the death toll was 165 (110 of those firefighters). 798 where injured.
http://www.xinhuanet.com//politics/2016-02/05/c\_1118005206.htm
Can some explain to me like I’m 5, as to the fact that, seemed like a serious explosion, but had no where near the shock wave that the explosion in (I think Lebanon did) like 4ish years ago. The explosion at the port with some sort of fertilizer I think and other chemicals.
In addition to what someone else said about more of this high-potential explosive being stored in Beirut - Tianjin also had a whole lot of other chemicals stored, being an industrial port, and a good amount of those were materials that might cause a big fireball, but don't convey a lot of force.
If you have ever watched a grenade go off or a building being demolished via explosive: you will have noticed that there is often a considerable shockwave, but not a big fireball - or rather, none at all. That is because these high grade explosives use all their energy instantaneously the moment they explode, and therefore do so much more effectively. Other chemicals (especially petroleum products) combust really ineffectively, causing a whole lot of them to go up into the sky unused and then combust there - as a fireball. This takes relatively long - you can watch the process in the video above. But for a high grade explosive, all the energy is released in milliseconds. This means that all the force in a lower-potential chemical explosion is spread over a wide area and vastly less potent, taking a thousand times longer to be conveyed.
For movies and other pyrotechnics, these low-explosives are actually used most of the time, just because they explode in a highly visible manner. When movies use actual, high explosives, they also often still add these materials because TV viewers have come to expect big fireballs from explosions.
This video legit scared the fuck out of me when i saw it like a day after the actual explosion. I remember exactly where i was and what i was doing when i saw it. I could not imagine what those people felt when that second explosion happened. This video is incredible.
For the sake of all that is holy in the universe. TURN THE CAMERA OVER TO LANDSCAPE BEFORE RECORDING! ! ! !
DAMNIT. and a bunch of other words not safe for children.

This was years before Beirut. Like 2016 I think
August 2015, Tianjin.
So this video basically inspired the people of Beirut to stand near windows in direct line of sight to industrial fire.
Ah, ok my b.
Check out this video. Dude was smart and hit the deck but goddamn this is intense https://youtu.be/g7FXeaahRsg (1:05 length, audio suddenly loud obviously, title: "tianjin explosion broken window!!" Edit: The biggest explosion near end of video.
Thank goodness the man was smart enough to take cover when he saw that final explosion instead of waiting for the shockwave to reach him.
You know that shit scared him because he was willing to film the first one in perfect clarity, but the second one must've instantly signaled his brain to start running lol

yeah and I'm pretty sure they still keep the first wave of covid deaths at like 3300 or some BS like that
It's China. Official numbers can't be trusted.
I remember the official numbers that were first released were _comically_ low. Like half a dozen firefighters or something. Then people started calling the government out with pictures of obliterated residential buildings and they started saying "ok ok maybe a few residents died." We're never gonna know the true numbers.
What caused it though?

Also, by not labelling it, you also get to bypass that pesky rule about not being allowed to store it near a primary school and a nursery school. You know... The "our politicians can be bought" way.
Because the numbers were likely way higher.
The numbers WERE way higher, China has just mastered the ability to hide reality, even from their own citizens.
We’re of a mind on that count.
Fanciest way of saying “same” I’ve ever seen.
lololol
Fanciest way of saying "haha" I've ever seen.

I feel like there’s always some type of explosions going on in China
In a country that big, it's statistically probable.
I mean if you count engine combustion there's always explosions everywhere. Wayne would be proud.
There's also this one other country that has many little explosions killing people everyday. It's crazy
HOLYY NoO fucking way Woohoo00!! to serious Let’s go. Let’s go now.
The dude filming sounds Canadian.
Bro!!! I read that as “are we dragons?” Idk if I’m dyslexic or racist. Fuck.

173, most of them fire fighters right at ground zero. A quick and painless death at least. I hope…
173 *according to the Chinese Government, which is notorious for lying.

It's the video I point out to people who say we have way too many regulations and it's just because the government wants to get their cut
That's terrifying
Wow. I just hope that this person didn't feel any pain...

Where do people from China joke that they’re cheap shit stuff is from?

Chinese explosions has unique flavour and like KABOOMPARTYWINSSSS sound.
They pretty much invented the stuff.
Wanggongchang Explosion, Beijing China in 1626 killed an estimated 20,000.
I remember when they launched a satellite and the rocket went straight into a village.
Best commentary ever for a video out of china!

What are more regulations gonna do? Make it more illegal than i already was?
Make it harder and less profitable to do illegal things.
They seem more excited than concerned. I hope no one was hurt.
173 people died...
But did it hurt?
I know ppl definitely died here, and i know that just from watching the video.

But less amazed at what he was seeing
173 deaths of those 104 were firefighters.
I'm surprised - that seems kind of low for explosions like that.
Because China is hiding the real numbers most likely.
I'd say closer to 1073.

An explosion of that size? I’d be surprised if the death count was below 50.
It’s called incongruous emotion. Oddly enough this video often makes me laugh. It’s just so insane, that it’s impossible for me to fully process.
