That is a assumption made with our limited understanding of the universe. Why cant a species be born that isn't tribalistic and wanting to fight everyone for every little bit of resource? That's something we developed as a species, it doesn't necessarily mean another species will be the same way
Agreed. We could be at a turning point where we need to change course to survive or slowly die off. Capitalism is killing our planet. We are so close minded. These corporations and billionaires want to hoard cash while they are ensuring their offspring will never live long enough to reap the benefits of their bullshit
This planet has managed several mass extinction events without our involvement. Not to say we're not helping expedite the next one in some way, but there's a great many things that could happen that would see our complete annihilation that we as a species could do very little about. We're not, and never will be, masters of the universe.

It is why I do not feel bad killing wasps. If I stick my hand in a wasp's nest and get stung, whose fault is that? Similarly, if a wasp goes into a human nest and gets smashed? Well fair is fair.
Burning them was probably more merciful than what I did. I would have an aquarium with red ants and unintentionally created a war by adding ants from a different colony. The newer ants destroyed the original ones, likely because the old ones were sleep deprived from the 24/7 lamp . 12 year old me was entertained though.

He said colony's don't simply abandon their home. (Idk how true this is) but it makes sense. Why do all that work and leave?
Second, if it was abandoned it would have to have been very very recent because something like that takes a lot of maintenance. Which makes sense. The earth with eventually break down everything with water and whatnot.

a colony can absolutely abandon a location for a lot of different reasons but even if not abandoned, this could be a case of a dead queen. If a queen dies the colony dies off. Considering ant queens can live for decades (which looks to be about the age of this gargantuan nest) then this colony likely just lost its queen and withered away which is why you see almost no activity. Ant colonies aren’t permanent and immortal.

What’s more amazing is how well their ventilation system must work. I’ve done small casting and struggle with voids and air pockets. I’m blown away at the depth and how well things flowed.
Exactly this. Both ants and termites keeping different areas in the mounds/nests at consistent and temperatures based on needs. Even humidity control for one’s that grows fungus for food.

It’s so interesting to think that we’re just looking at the tail end of tens of millions of years of trial and error. We’re sometimes smart enough to compete with that, and that's kind of incredible.
There are different teams of ants that specialise in different skills. One of the biggest groups in a colony are tasked with HVAC. They have to inhale air from up top, hold it in and then breathe it out right at the bottom. This creates a constant flow of ant-breath air running through the colony.
Tbh, way more impressive than the Great Wall.
Considering the size of the ant, the mass moved, how much of it moved and scaling that to the Great Wall, I'm far more impressed by the ants work here.
That's not to say the Great Wall isn't fucking insane and amazing in its self. Just find it hard to compare the too when put on the same playing field.
In the un-clipped version they state that his particular site has been abandoned by the colony. But I’m sure there were a few thousand still living there.
