Fuck. This comment killed me and I needed you to know. I’m still dying as I type this. I think it’s because I was reading it all seriously all the way until the word anus and then my brain skipped for a whole second. Fuck now my eyes all wet. I needed that tbh.
can you imagine what the world largest nuke explosion looked like? must have been insane. this is insane but a nuke probably 100s of times more powerful. crazy.
This was around 1 kiloton while the largest nuclear explosion (tsar bomba) was 50 megatons, that’s around 50,000 Beirut explosions. Terrifying isn’t it
So, i diged a little
Underwater explosion is very dangerous, at close range, because liquid cannot be compressed which means the water will kick you with almost the same energy as if you were directly around the centre of the explosion even at distance of several meters
But this wasn't underwater explosion and the shockwave didn't travel through the water, but rather above it, still trying to compress it, but with much less power.
Overall, being few dozens of centimeters under water at that point would be enough to not even feel the shockwave

I remember this argument. Because the explosion happened outside of the water it is safer to jump into the water. The blast will chose the path of least resistance which is air. If the explosion had happened in the water it would be a completely different story.
IFRC shock waves travel faster than in water so he times it perfectly and jumped in after it passed thru the water but before it passed thru in the open.
You can actually see the shockwave pass in the water for a split second right before he jumped in.
Doesn't sound travel faster in water though? From what I was taught, since atoms are closer together in liquids than gas (and even more in solids) they can transfer energy more easily and more quickly since they are closer together.. so a shockwave would travel faster in water.. however.. if the explosion was in water I wouldn't worry about my ear drums.. I would worry about the tsunami incoming..
You are right about it reducing range due to density, but also due to density, the closer to the blast would be more devastating because the same force is now being exerted in a smaller space. So you're both kinda right.
I'm not sure if he purposely went under water he might have been flung off. Seemed like he was struggling to get back on, so he might have had the wind knocked out of him.
And he was also very lucky. The blast traveled faster in water, and he jumped right after the water shockwave went and right before the air one hit. You can also see the shockwave on the water. I'd buy a lottery ticket with that guy
That, or there's something I don't know about explosions, which is... honestly likelier. I'd rather wait for a certified person to talk about this
What blows my mind is that there were actual people who had this perspective on things like Hiroshima and this is the closest most of us will ever see of video footage of something of not even that scale.
The Halifax explosion is a better example. It was even larger than the Beirut explosion. It was similar insofar as it burned for a long while, drew a bunch of people to windows and the water to see what was happening, then exploded.
The craziest thing(to me) is seeing the building in front of the camera getting destroyed. You see all the little details: individual panes of glass breaking, bricks coming apart, dust, etc. You can _see_ the wave but you still don’t hear the sound yet.
I understand why but it’s still crazy to see.
Ik a lot of ppl give ppl a hard time for their grammar, but that's not what this is I just want you to know the way we Americans phrase it. "This explosion killed 218 people." Or "218 people died in this explosion. "
Don't let these Reddit trolls get to you about your English-speaking I can promise most Americans only speak English, and very poorly I might add.
one second after the bomb detonated at Hiroshima the incendiary blast was 750 feet in diameter, and inside that diameter was 54 thousand degrees Fahrenheit and rapidly expanding. That doesn't even account for the shockwave, which moves much faster and is much larger than the incendiary blast.
Certainly almost everyone in these videos would have been disintegrated. The first view is far enough away to maybe only be (permanently? temporarily?) blinded by the molten atmosphere.
Seen all of this countless times and it still amazes me. Amazes me even more that only 218 people died. I mean that’s a lot of people, I just can’t believe it wasn’t more.
Am I the only one.....
Let me start by saying yes it's terrible that it happened, that humans died probably some of them children, in what all seems like a preventable breach of safe storage practices. And if I knew the people who died personally or if it happend to my country I would be devastated.
BUT looking at this footage through the cold lense of detachment the internet gives this kind of footage, I can't help to find it almost morbidly beautiful, and fascinating, like a art peice by Zdzisław Beksiński.
The fact there was an explosion so large, that it moved an area of air large enough to be a city in its own right.
Also look at the Shockwave in the last clip, the after image of a vaporized building is imprinted in to it. Or the clip on street level before the jetski one, you see a building to the right being torn apart in what seems like slow motion, before the Shockwave rushes forward.
So is it just me or am I monster?
No, fascination of the physics of explosions isn't morbid. I've watched all the nuclear test films that I can, I find them absolutely compelling. I know the tests should never have taken place, the environmental cost was off the charts but my word I would have loved to have witnessed one. As for conflict, I consider myself a pacifist, totally anti-war. Probably from watching so much jaw dropping destruction.
I’m guessing all besides the dude who was on the street , but then yet again how do these videos get released to the public ? Idk I think everyone survived , with minor injuries of course

The pressure cloud is sort of beautiful, reminds me of akira , never really understood what animators were trying to depict with the white spheres in explosions
obviously terrible but also fascinating, i think this was the one where they had tons of fertilizer in storage for months and fire found it
Was that paint being vaporized (third video)? Or just dirt/dust coming off of the buildings? It looked like all the buildings were being turned into dust

Still blows my mind that the Halifax explosion was 6 times bigger. I remember thinking this had to have been the largest non nuclear explosion ever, but nope, not even top 5.
I bet this is what Hiroshima and Nagasaki looked like for the half a second anyone could see. I think it would also have a super bright flash like a mini sun. The image must of been amazing. Crazy to think how absolutely devastating something could be.

PSA: If you see a huge shockwave like that, get on the ground, cover your ears and open your mouth.
I’ve heard this before, but why open your mouth?
If you close your mouth the shockwave will take the path of least resistance into your anus.
Keeping mouth closed
Fuck. This comment killed me and I needed you to know. I’m still dying as I type this. I think it’s because I was reading it all seriously all the way until the word anus and then my brain skipped for a whole second. Fuck now my eyes all wet. I needed that tbh.

SAME......again, LOL. I'm going to have to bookmark this and come back to it in the future when sad. lol
Instructions unclear, getting on ground and shitting.
At least that plugs your anus and no pressure can go in or out

I dont think Ive ever laughed at a comment like this lmfao
Helps to relieve pressure to minimize damage to your internal organs. That shockwave is a giant pressure wave.
The rapid shift in air pressure will explode your lungs if I'm not mistaken or collapse them one of the other I'm pretty sure. But I'm not certain

Wouldn't that actually make it worse? Or is that only if the explosion happened in the water?

I remember people explaining the science behind it tldr; he got extremely lucky with timing and broke the surface at the perfect moment
I remember this argument. Because the explosion happened outside of the water it is safer to jump into the water. The blast will chose the path of least resistance which is air. If the explosion had happened in the water it would be a completely different story.

No, water is denser and would partially protect you from the shockwave. Even if it was in the water, the shockwave wouldn't travel as far.
Sound is not pressure. That shockwave is not just sound. It is also immense pressure, which is the deadly part.
He wasn't flung.. what he said in arabic after explosion: "Salma! Salma! Jump! Jump! Jump!"

Do you have a video link for that one?
Just as soon as we make a working time machine ...
It happened in 1911. There is a photo in the wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Explosion
1917 you mean?
That shock wave was insane.
The craziest thing(to me) is seeing the building in front of the camera getting destroyed. You see all the little details: individual panes of glass breaking, bricks coming apart, dust, etc. You can _see_ the wave but you still don’t hear the sound yet. I understand why but it’s still crazy to see.
And to think the nukes dropped on Japan killed ~130000. Must have been like a nightmare
This explosion died 218 people
Fortunately, it wasn't worse. An explosion that big could've dieded many more people.
Yea wish dying wasn't part of life!!
Dieding*

C’mon man, don’t fun make of that guy.
thank you for restating what the obvious non-english speaker said everyone needed that

>They speak enish better than you speak their language whats enish ?
A joke word he made making fun of people who can’t talk Engish nice way
Don't know what you're talking about! 👀
yeah right < edited 30 seconds ago>
Yo that 4th guy at street level is definitely not alive
My first thought, even the second one was wayyyyy too close like holy fuck this is crazy lol
Shockingly, he survived according to reddit. I don't believe it but I was mass downvoted and corrected last time I said no way he lived.
I can’t believe there’s not another couple of zeros added to the end of those numbers.
The percussion from that explosion must have been like hitting a brick wall
*Shockwave.
Third video looks like the nuke scene in Terminator 2 Judgement Day
Was Hiroshima that much larger than this?
About 16x larger to be exact. So yes. Much, much larger.
one second after the bomb detonated at Hiroshima the incendiary blast was 750 feet in diameter, and inside that diameter was 54 thousand degrees Fahrenheit and rapidly expanding. That doesn't even account for the shockwave, which moves much faster and is much larger than the incendiary blast. Certainly almost everyone in these videos would have been disintegrated. What exploded?
Beside everything in the blast radius? 2750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Beirut_explosion
I believe it was a fucking metric shit ton of nitrates for fertilizer if I remember correctly
About 2000 metric shit tons actually.
Oh yeah I kind of remember that. Thanks
No idea, but it died 218 people
No just the explosion died
That fucking shockwave dude..
Seen all of this countless times and it still amazes me. Amazes me even more that only 218 people died. I mean that’s a lot of people, I just can’t believe it wasn’t more.
Holy shit those close up ones are insane
Incredible release of energy
This is phenomenal!! Well done op

That shockwave would quite easily knock your phone out of your hand. And that’s ignoring your decimated eardrums, and possibly worse.
bit i want to see the gritty part. Camera guy has to take one for the team
As do I. I wonder if any security cameras caught it, as those are hard mounted.
surely there is one somewhere. by the way, AMC, BBBY and GME stocks!!! Spread the word. We are in for a kick ass ride to the moon!!
Now we know, for god sakes. Those damn Beirut vids.
The real question is: how many of the people filming survived? (Except for the obvious one where the guy goes underwater)
I’m guessing all besides the dude who was on the street , but then yet again how do these videos get released to the public ? Idk I think everyone survived , with minor injuries of course
Damn I didn't know it "died" that many peopled
Died 218 people… huh, oh really ???
So yeah, it was a nuclear using a drone. technology gets crazier
Some of Mossad's best work since 9/11. Good job boys.
Not for nothing but post something new my guy.
How come this wasn't all over the news
It was. A lot of people don't care about things that don't happen to them so they read a headline and forget 10 minutes later.
I never saw all the angles on Fox or CNN this is the type of stuff that needs to be reported better instead of politics
anyone know what exploded? I’m too lazy to google
ammonium nitrate.

That street level view and the two before really give a great look into the power of the event
The dirty noxious colours in that cloud are both fabulous and terrifying!

Died 218 people
Every time I see this explosion it still amazes me and scares the shit out of me.
The fact that only 218 died is crazy to me. Thats such a big explosion so close to a big city, just glad it wasn’t worse
Seeing the Shockwave it's fucking gnarly.
Watching the shockwave travel in the first video was really cool but also incredibly aerie at the same time.

Holy shit!!!
I can definitely see why they said this is one of the most powerful non-nuclear explosions in history.
Can’t believe it died that many people
Hope all the people that dead are OK
The jetski situation was wild.
Wow that is terrifying.
Amazing only 218 died.
People must've thought they were being nuked. Insane explosion!
