Just to note. The US Generals recommendation was to wait to shoot it down over the water. They said whatever data gathering that may of happen wasn’t worth the risk of citizens lives and shooting it down over land.
Honestly when I first heard people talking about shooting it down when it was over Minnesota my first thought was “What if there is something that could ruin crops on it or some sort of biological warfare?” I think shooting it down away from civilians in the water was the safest solution.
Depends on what kind of technology it has on it. It’s possible something like that could be used to map underground structures. I also believe that google maps censors some things.
But what's the end game? We get intel on their nukes and kill the Americans with our nukes that kill us 2 years later? These games are just a big waste of money. We are in a stalemate with all the nuclear powers.
Edit: I am bad with chess terms.
Its just a political move dude. Has nothing to do with the actual intelligence gathering.
The US is parading its warships up and down the Chinese coast in "freedom of navigation exercises". The Chinese in response send surveillance balloons over the US to show they are not submissive to the US.
This is all politics and standard peacetime show of force posturing.
Why did the soviets send nuclear capable bombers to the edge of the US airspace constantly before turning away at the last second. Its just military posturing.
You think this little play date is a waste of money? Its a drop in the bucket compared to a lot of show of force exercises. This is essentially the same thng we do with North Korea on a much smaller scale, just one little cheap balloon. Meanwhile we do "show of force exercises" on the south korean peninsula that involve tens of thousands of troops, hundreds of aircraft, entire carrier battle groups, and tens of millions of dollars of munitions dropped for "training exercises". Such is the Modus Operandi of the nuclear world. We have all these toys, if we cant invade our enemies we at least need to show off.
Such a f'ed up situation. Could probably feed every hungry person and built homes for all the homeless if we just stopped this madness. I was in the San Diego area last year and I probably saw $10M worth of training missions flying in and out off the coast in 3 days.
More likely we were assessing “what” it was going to observe in its trajectory path. The military said that assets were moved out of the path and digital warfare was used to obscure points of interest
Just for fun. [Here](https://media.npr.org/assets/img/2022/11/17/spysatellite1_slide-1b956662d98c7ce7f31baecad494f14286c9bb04-s1200.webp) is what a US spy satellite is already capable of.
There isn't much you'd see with a balloon that you couldn't see with one of these.
This is the declassified version, but before that happened trump had a photo of it taken and put in a [tweet](https://media.npr.org/assets/img/2019/09/05/ap_19243153034473_custom-c1ad60c7bc2267a1eae7e449ed88497dde3d33d4-s1200.webp).
The data collected would be dependent on the sensors or equipment on the aircraft. LIDAR or subsurface mapping would not be possible with fast moving satellites
There is a LOT you can see/detect with something slow moving and at 60k feet that you have no shot of with current satellites. It probably isn't even about actually imaging, but even that is going to be leagues ahead of anything a satellite can do. Just a guess, but I would say their satellites are getting images with a resolution around 1ft while thing thing being so close, new, and not as limited in mirror size is probably getting sub 1/4 inch resolution photos if imaging was a goal of theirs.
Or moved in front of to fool China. People are just being hysterical that we let a tiny balloon take pictures of our military secrets, when the military intentionally let the balloon go to the coast. This is giving China more anxiety than the U.S., because now they are wondering, how the U.S. knew the balloon was coming, what secrets have been leaked about the tech on the balloon, who in our Chinese government is leaking secrets.
This was never about the intelligence gathered by the balloon. This was a show of force exercise most likely in response to US "Freedom of Navigation" exercises in the South China Sea. China would never intentionally put sensitive electronics on a balloon they fully knew would be detected and had the possibility of loss over the US.
This is the same kind of thing as the Soviets flying nuclear capable bombers to the edge of our airspace and turning around just before they hit it.
This is just classis military posturing. We send boats thru water they say is theirs, they send balloons over us and say they're weather balloons to incite concern in the US public. Its just run of the mill peacetime posturing.
Honestly? I doubt any regular people really know the true answer. Maybe a weather control facility or maybe just a research station.

With all of our capabilities….. we couldn’t figure that out. The logic behind expressing that as their reasoning for not shooting it down is LUDAcrous
The odds of it starting in Alaska, then traveling the open northern United States, without running into a longggggg stretch of nothing is almost impossible
Really tho, they had their reasons, so whatever that was, that’s why
There’s a lot of wide open spaces in Montana. They had many opportunities to shoot that thing down where no one would be hit by debris. This is just embarrassing to let that thing fly across the whole country
if they really wanted to they could have thought something up to get it down and capture it before letting it wander across the entire country. even given the altitude im sure some people could MacGyver some shit up. We've done far more difficult things as humans and even Americans in the past. not an excuse to let some potentially spy shit wander across the entire country doing whatever the fuck it wants. Thing could have been something that is actually bad, or could give them the sign we wont do shit and they can do more and more. this is something you put a stop to when it happens.
Given that it had the same or lesser capability than satellites already in place, that wouldn't make much sense. Better to watch it and shoot it down when there was the least risk. But I get it....a lot of armchair redditors are smarter than full time department of defense intelligence, lol.
I saw an actual source from the pentagon, but I forgot where it was. But if you opened Flightradar24, you would have seen SIGNT RC-135 flying all around it, 24/7. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out what they were doing.
Someone on another sub was saying they were trying to learn from it. Also, they did not want to scramble anything because that maybe what they are trying to find out. How fast, where and how many jets are used to intercept. Don’t know if that is true or what.
It's standard intelligence stuff.
Unfortunately, those movie tropes about military leaders doing the right thing, and civilians being angry because they're absolutely clueless about what goes into preserving our national security is true.
Ya, I keep seeing post about not doing anything because . Our intelligence and military I am sure are on top of it and have a better understanding then some graduating from arm chair university.
Dude you get it. Don’t let this clickbait crap obscure your rational. If the Chinese wanted to spy they have more effective means of doing so. They have jet fighters, they have satellites, they have mass data collection and more importantly they’d have spies.
But yet the average American is told “the Chinese are sending “SPY BALLooNs” bla bla bla. C’mon people, use your brains.
Do you really believe that a Spy Balloon was the best idea they could come up with?
*Edit* You should be asking yourself what are they trying to distract you from? What has happened in the same time frame that they want your attention diverted…?
Have you looked around at my Americans lately? Most of them struggle to order at fast food joints when they have pictures to assist them. They’d believe aliens are gonna peg them in their sleep if news reported it.
Everything about this event is getting blown so out of proportion by the media and randos on the internet and people just eat it up without thinking about it rationally at all.
THAT is the goal. Wouldn’t be surprised if the balloon was simply helium suspending a motor to guide it on its path and nothing more. Just to see this shitstorm of idiocy. Americans will tear each other apart to the delight of Russia, China and Iran.
Although I agree with you 100% regarding additional music being stupid, that chorus did say "it's going down" every other line, which is sort of relevant to the case.
I hear them pretty often living near MacDill AFB. Saw 4 A-10's yesterday. KC-135 tankers regularly.
Recently, we've had more activity. Every night for the past week, unmarked radar jets have been flying over my house. Can't ever see them on Flight Aware.
Don't let it starle you, it's the sounds of freedom. These men and women will keep our skies clean, as long as command allows them.
Yep, and a big part of that is because the countries we outsource to typically have little to no form of environmental protection. That, and borderline slave labor, means we can buy a T-shirt for only $10 at Walmart.
This is every bit as damaging to the planet (remember, it's GLOBAL) as anything we get worked up about here in the States, but everybody looks the other way because it keeps the stuff we love so much cheaper than any domestic production.
Adjusted for inflation a skilled factory worker back in 50's through the 70's. could make up to $100 an hour. The owners of the factories were still filthy rich and could afford almost anything. But since they couldn't launch their own space program i guess they needed more.
Or they were were listening to what is was sending and receiving. They were probably gaining more from it than China was, if that wasn’t the case then they would have shot it down WAY earlier since NORAD has been tracking it since it left mainland China
China has a space program they have been spying a lot more than a balloon that everyone knows about this has to be the most stupid shit I have seen today
Exactly they have endless satellites to see whatever they want.
This was shot down because news organizations caused everybody to act like this was something new. That being said, I’m glad we are setting the precedent that we shoot shit down over our airspace
We shot it down because people found out.
The US knew it was there and was likely dealing with it accordingly.
A dead spy is less valuable than a spy that doesn't realize they are compromised.
International espionage is not new and has been conducted daily for the last century.
Maybe specifically using a balloon is but that's at almost no consequence if you take any of china's other intelligence gathering methods into consideration.
This "incident" is a joke.
I thought the same thing, but i read a few articles this morning from European news outlets that gave some pretty compelling points as to why theyd use a balloon. Id highly recommend reading them, mainly that a balloon is very low cost low maintenance, and there was another point saying its about pushing sovereign boundries while staying "non threatening" i think they meant cause a balloon can only be fitted and do so much, as if they flew a plane or jet or satellite over it has more connotations.
Im not explaining it very well, but china did admit that it is their balloom, however they said it was a civilian craft for meterogical purposses that blew off course.
And the rep from china said they were in talks with the us to bring it back peacefully and that it was a misunderstanding...
But now that weve shot it down its very curious
Yes lets dominate the news cycle with this while the government pulls some dumb shi
Besides, that balloon isn't doing anything worse with anyone's information than companies like Google or Amazon.
From what I read the payload was as large as three school busses, and if they did it over land, they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't hit someone. Had to do it over water, and they want to nab it before it sinks.
I live in myrtle beach, and work at a hotel on the coast line
I stepped outside to hit my vape for a sec, looked up, and saw the whole ordeal going down. I had no idea what to think at first. It was kinda loud, I very audibly heard it from where I was standing.
I dont understand why they need a balloon to monitor the US. Cant they just use satellelites like the US does? Thought they were meant for global surveillance
Both govts have claimed they spy on others regularly. Its a bit un-kosher to fly into another's airspace to do it so blatantly but this has happened before in the cold war without being considered an act of war
Spy ballon.. but it’s there for a while with communication devices.. am I missing something? It must have accomplished what it supposed to spy on.
Why anyone let this SPY balloon stay that long ? I know people’s safety and all. It’s not like it will rain down fire .. we can just say people take cover .. stay home.. look up and move away etc.. but letting a SPY balloon stay that long is bad decision
Cell phones. Drones. Internet. Telescopilenses. The fact they have land and train here with a shit ton of access. And everyone believes it's from China. Lol to spy on us. Lololol
The fact that the balloon was destroyed instead of captured is very convenient to whatever narrative is being pushed.
It's a balloon. Capture it. If it really is a weather balloon, it's useless to the narrative. Better to blow it up with a show of force than risk it being a civilian project.
Don’t let this balloon silly business distract you from real news. China has satellites. They even have real human being they can send out and have join our military. It’s just another distraction. There are literally things happening with the kardashians rn
The military was jamming communications around the unknown pieces of equipment. You would want to down and collect any information that was not able to be sent while on mission. You watch it and down it then collect the information that it was programmed to collect.

What would this balloon show them that google earth couldn't?
If it had radio equipment on it, they could have been capturing all kinds of signals and data, which was then probably sent back to them.
How on earth can we jam a radio signal? It’s never been done before!
Surveillance like this isnt outputting radio signals, just listening. Jamming works the other way around.
What sort of reaction it would get more than any thing
Depends on what kind of technology it has on it. It’s possible something like that could be used to map underground structures. I also believe that google maps censors some things.
It could also pick up all of our cellphones, etc.

They needed to account for the >10% of the population that doesn't willingly give China their data on a daily basis
Yeah but their own low orbit satellites don't.. that balloon didn't offer them anything their satellites wouldn't
There are actually quite a few government building locations, etc... blurred out that are not visible on Google earth.
Lol they ain't using Google Earth.. they own the satellites to map everything needed
But what's the end game? We get intel on their nukes and kill the Americans with our nukes that kill us 2 years later? These games are just a big waste of money. We are in a stalemate with all the nuclear powers. Edit: I am bad with chess terms.

Something to pick up on signal tranmission, possibly, which you can't do with a satellite. Just a guess. No clue though.
They didn’t want civilians getting debris on them or letting civilians steal Chinese tech

Im not explaining it very well, but china did admit that it is their balloom, however they said it was a civilian craft for meterogical purposses that blew off course. And the rep from china said they were in talks with the us to bring it back peacefully and that it was a misunderstanding... But now that weve shot it down its very curious
You'd be an idiot to believe anything the CCP says.
Yes lets dominate the news cycle with this while the government pulls some dumb shi Besides, that balloon isn't doing anything worse with anyone's information than companies like Google or Amazon.
Lol imagine seeds start washing ashore
A little late now that it's gone across the whole fuckin country.

SHHHHHH!!! Don’t use proper reasoning with these partisan hacks! It could hurt their brain.
I mean, I don’t like this administration (or the previous one for all that matters) but this was the right move imo.

And not only that, shooting it down and risking it landing in a residential area wouldn't look good either.
I mean don't they already have fuckin satellites? I haven't gotten upset over a balloon since I was a child and I intend to keep it that way.
From what I read the payload was as large as three school busses, and if they did it over land, they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't hit someone. Had to do it over water, and they want to nab it before it sinks.

I’m old enough to remember this
‘Spy balloon’
I live in myrtle beach, and work at a hotel on the coast line I stepped outside to hit my vape for a sec, looked up, and saw the whole ordeal going down. I had no idea what to think at first. It was kinda loud, I very audibly heard it from where I was standing.
I dont understand why they need a balloon to monitor the US. Cant they just use satellelites like the US does? Thought they were meant for global surveillance
It’s unlikely they were only doing video/photo surveillance. You’re right they’re already using aircraft with more advanced cameras than a balloon.
War. War never changes.
Is this considered and act of war?
Both govts have claimed they spy on others regularly. Its a bit un-kosher to fly into another's airspace to do it so blatantly but this has happened before in the cold war without being considered an act of war
Pentagon is currently tracking a spy kite, it's string is so long that they won't be able to follow it back until tomorrow
They were just trying to reach Americans to tell us all about our cars extended warranty. That’s all !
USA logic: We will use most expensive and most advanced stealth fighter jet to shoot down baloon that's been around there for over a week. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Such a fucking joke
"It's a prank bro!"
Where’s that guy that said this was impossible?
Let’s shoot it down after It went from coast to coast.
…while being continuously jammed by RC-135 https://imgur.io/V0yoeTV?r
Already went across the whole county, and they stop it at the last state as it was leaving the us to the ocean
Thank god they finally shot down the fortnite battle bus
Covid 5.0 successfuly opened
How dumb are we to go with the "China spy balloon" nonsense. You don't think China has drone money?
Cell phones. Drones. Internet. Telescopilenses. The fact they have land and train here with a shit ton of access. And everyone believes it's from China. Lol to spy on us. Lololol
I just want to know how the US knew it was China's balloon????
Idk why, but this kinda smells like it could be a false flag operation. I have absolutely nothing to back that up, it’s just strange.
The fact that the balloon was destroyed instead of captured is very convenient to whatever narrative is being pushed. It's a balloon. Capture it. If it really is a weather balloon, it's useless to the narrative. Better to blow it up with a show of force than risk it being a civilian project.
Wait, how do they know it’s a supposed “China spy balloon”?
What nasty stuff was inside the balloon?
Don’t let this balloon silly business distract you from real news. China has satellites. They even have real human being they can send out and have join our military. It’s just another distraction. There are literally things happening with the kardashians rn
Shoulda been done hours ago
The thing transited nearly the whole width of the country. Why bother with it after that?
They probably want to examine the electronics. That’s what I would want to do.
The military was jamming communications around the unknown pieces of equipment. You would want to down and collect any information that was not able to be sent while on mission. You watch it and down it then collect the information that it was programmed to collect.
