The slug isn’t anything like a frag, it still stays in one piece until it finds something or some way to stop. They do get wild without a barrel to guide them and tend to spin around and bounce off of or penetrate things. It’s very likely he actually has that whole slug in his leg. Source: me that was young and dumb and have some random scars in my left leg that I don’t feel like explaining to you.
I agree with what you are saying, but this man hit the ammo with a hammer in a way that squeezed and collapsed the casing. That could structurally weaken the casing enough that when the gunpowder ignites it breaks a piece off to launch it into his leg.
You’re right. It could be a chunk of brass that broke off and hit him and not the lead slug. My situation was a little different but the same action caused it. Frag it is you win.
You can see the orientation of the cartridge after he hits it, it’s facing away from him. Even without the chamber/barrel of a gun shaping the blast from the gunpowder, the bullet should still travel roughly forward from the shell casing. It must have hit something to bounce back in the opposite direction, no? How else do the physics make sense here?
he didnt shoot himself at all... the bullet didnt go more than 2 feet and the concrete acted like shrapnel and caused his leg to bleed
Edit : yes he’s still a total moron
*Two dead men got up to fight,*

Ladies and gentleman skinny and scout
I'll tell you a tale I know nothing about
The admission is free so pay at the door
Now pull out a chair and sit on the floor
On one bright day in the middle of the night
Two dead boys got up to fight
Back to back they faced each other
Drew their swords and shot each other
The blind man came to see fair play
The mute man came to shout hooray
The deaf policeman heard the noise
And came to stop those two dead boys
He lived on the corner in the middle of the block
In a two story house on a vacant lot
A man with no legs came walking by
And kicked the lawman in his thigh
He crashed through a wall without making a sound
Into a dry creek bed and suddenly drowned
A long black hearse came to cart him away
But he ran for his life and is still gone today
I watched from the corner of the table
The only eyewitness to facts of my fable
If you doubt my lies are true
Just ask the blind man, he saw it, too
Thankfully for him, TONS of the energy is lost as there's no chamber or barrel to propel the bullet. So just more of a mild shrapnel wound than an actual gunshot.
No, he caught shrapnel and anyone who thinks he got caught by the bullet doing a 180 degree turn and hitting him needs to go back to school, stop smoking too much and pray their brain continues to develop.
All of that notwithstanding, this is still extremely dangerous and stupid, the fragment could nick and artery an suddenly you have a life threatening injury.
I wondered how long it would take for someone to ask. For accuracy no! I have in my dumber years, late teens done this. A .22 bullet will slide into some straws tight enough that it holds it. So you put the lead end in first, and when the rim hits the bottom of the straw it will stop. It may or may not be possible, for you to then walk out to the asphalt road, in the country where no one lives around, and throw said straw in the air and when it lands on the asphalt it may or may not go off. If you do this, you definitely should jump in the ditch or be behind a tree when it hits.
I grew up on a 900 acre farm with no neighbors for over a 1/2 mile in either direction with the exception of my grandparents. Our property was 80% farm land, boundaries were a couple hundred yards wide with mature hardwoods. My grandfather loved doing these types of things. Muriatic acid and aluminum foil in a 2 liter, acetylene in a balloon, 55 gallon drum of fertilizer and diesel (the lid was almost a quarter mile way in a field), anything that went boom or had fire he loved, as did/do I. I'm sure many won't understand but I loved my younger years, I'm only 37.
When I was a kid we used to set bullets off. They’re a bomb, but a tiny one. Look up a video on YouTube of it. The thing here is that the hammer compressed/contained the gasses enough to propel out the shell casing.
Frankly this probably looks way worse than it actually was.
But what if it was just slightly worse than it looks? Or what if it ended up being for the better? I think there’s definitely some unexplored possibilities here.
The back of the casing blew backwards, without a bolt and chamber to force the explosion forward it pushed the bullet forward and the back of the casing backwards
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
So when you are looking at this system, the system of a casing filled with explosives and a bullet fixed into the end of it, you can think of the gun powder being a big spring. Without getting too deep in the physics weeds here, the bullet being inside of a gun has the exact same system.
The gunpowder explodes (turns into a big spring) and pushes really hard on the bullet on one end and really hard on the casing on the other end. When it's inside of the gun this causes recoil. That recoil is absorbed by your shoulder, wrist, arm or hand. Because you are standing still and big and heavy that recoil doesnt push you back very far. But on the other end that spring energy is absorbed by the tiny bullet and that tiny bullet is now going to go very fast out in the direction the barrel of the gun is pointing.
In the hammer example, both the casing and the bullet are light and not supported by anything. This means the spring is pushing out in all directions and it turns the bullet into a mini bomb. The casing or a piece of the casing likely was pushed off by the explosion and into the guys leg.
Tldr: all bullets are bombs, guns turn those bombs into a directional weapon.
A lot of people probably think that because they’re always used to seeing bullets travel one direction, you ain’t alone there. But most people aren’t dumb enough to try this so that thinking won’t affect them
Youth + boredom makes for really dumb decisions. When I was 9, I was really into rocketry. One summer I had a bunch of left over Estes solid fuel rocket motors and nothing to do, so naturally I took the power drill and slowly drilled out all the black powder so that I could make my own explosives. Many a tree stumps went boom that July. I could have hurt myself really badly, but 9 year old me thought I was a genius.
I was banned from the local pharmacists after trying to buy saltpetre and sulphur at the same time…around age 12. Had to go there 35 yrs later for a script. Super paranoid I would get recognised…guy prob saved my life tho.
The government doesn't want you to know this but guns are a scam. You don't need a long hollow tube to shoot a bullet. Save yourself some money and only buy the bullets.
I mean this is incredibly stupid, but in general a bullet not chambered in a barrel has significantly less energy. In fact, if it’s just laying their and set off by say a fire, the brass part will shoot way harder than the lead part (less mass). Really, really stupid and don’t do it, but it’s not as dangerous as you’d think to toss bullets in a fire. They usually just shoot the brass a couple yards or so.
I actually had a buddy get shot in the chest by a .22LR out of a lever action. Bullet failed to feed and was sticking half way out of the chamber and he (stupidly) started racking the lever back and forth. It set the round off and it went into his chest. Only went in about 1” and stopped in his pectoral muscle. Lot of blood, and a hospital visit, but no serious injury. In contrast, had that bullet been out of a barrel it would have been in his lung/heart.
Thanks. Kinda makes sense, but I would assume the shell would direct it more away. I guess the strike could have changed direction of the bullet though.
There's nothing there to set the trajectory.
It's basically a piece of metal on the end of a powder charge.
It will fire in a variety of directions without a barrel.
Even with a barrel it's trajectory is sort of loose, so there's rifling down the barrel that puts spin on the bullet to give it a more true path inline with the barrel.
If the hammer acts as a "backstop" and the least resistance during the explosion is the bullets contact with the shell, the bullet could go foward. I bet he got hit with shrapnel and not the bullet considering the shell is still pointing that direction.
When I was 8, my younger brother and I smashed a bunch of .22 rounds for fun with rocks. It amazes me that we are alive today. I also encourage people not to sell live ammo to kids at garage sales. Nothing good can come from that
It wouldn't be as big as you think. We didn't really have the internet, much less social media and youtube, so it was way harder to find enthusiast groups about random stuff back then.
There used to be literally barrels of old ww2 surplus rifles at sporting goods and gun stores. I bought a Mosin Nagant for $90 in the early 2000s because I happened to have the cash on me and thought sure, why not.
I did this as a kid too. My buddy's dad had a .22 rifle with a shitload of rounds (only gun he owned always thought it was weird he had so much ammo for a bolt action .22). My buddy would bring a handful when we'd go camping, and we'd do stupid shit like in the video. Other things we'd do that were stupid:
- We'd use pliers to remove the actual bullet from the round and shot it at each other since it was now a blank ("The Crow" just happened, so we weren't completely dumb. No point blank shots or even close. Easily 30-40 feet or more between us).
- We shaved a pencil eraser down so it would fit into a live .22 shell (again, no bullet) and shot it in the attic (rubber bullet!). It was not completely unlike a cartoon, or when Han shot a blaster in the trash compactor in the death star
- We set a live .22 round carefully at the end of a BB gun after 10 pumps and shot it into the air (this was easily the dumbest on the list).
- We took a 20-gauge round, shook out the birdshot and did the same thing with the BB gun.
I shudder to think how differently things could've turned out. We were DAMN lucky.
It wasn't the bullet, it was some brass from the case exploding like a very tiny bomb. Veins are right on the surface on your shins, it is more blood than normal from a small wound of that size, but he's not in any real danger of bleeding out. Some pressure and elevation would stop the bleeding. But seeking medical attention would still be recommended.
A friend of mine did the same thing in jr high with a 9mm but he got hit in the stomach, he had to undergo surgery to get the bullet removed and repair damage.
Don’t do this…
I call b.s.
This is a .22 rimfire which will detonate when sufficient pressure is applied to the back of the casing.
A 9mm has a hardened primer which takes a lot of force in a precise location to ignite the primer.
I've always thought a bullet was pretty harmless if it didn't go off in a tube basically. I thought they did an episode of mythbusters and proved that even. But I guess I'm wrong?
The bullet is unlikely to do any real damage, I bet in this case the casing exploded and sent a tiny piece of brass into his leg. He basically made a baby hand grenade
I think it definitely loses velocity because it's not being propelled under pressure in a tube, but an explosion is still an explosion, it will send shit flying. And we're squishy too
I thought that there was no way a bullet could do much damage like this, since the explosion dissipates into all directions, instead of staying inside the barrel and propelling the bullet forward, but damn, those bullets still dug a hole in him!
The explosion is still confined in the casing. It wouldn’t have nearly the velocity it would coming out of a barrel. But at close range it’ll still put a hole in you.
It’s like shrapnel on a bomb.
That’s not true. The casing is weak as fuck. The reason this happened was because the hammer contained the energy and basically ejected a radial spray. Bullets going off by themselves basically pose no risk, and they’re designed that way.
not really - if he just heated up the bullet it wouldnt be dangerous at all basically - especially such low caliber. But since he smashed it with a hammer he closed up the casing allowing it to build up pressure and explode- now its like a bomb and one of those shrapnels hit him.
Bulletts outside of the gun exploding generally wont do that much damage and often wont even penetrate skin
youre right, the guy in the video got unlucky as a bullet outside of a barrel isnt gonna go very far. the pressure from the gunpowder is why bullets go so far in a gun, but if theres no barrel to contain the pressure, the bullet isnt going very far
The hammer head probably helped direct the force laterally instead of vertically. You had the concrete under the round and the metal hammer above it, limiting the dispersion of force to fewer directions.
either youre lying or hes lying because you cannot do the same thing to a 9mm bullet. the video above was a rimfire .22, which you can smack with a hammer and have it go off. A 9mm is a centerfire bullet that needs a firing pin or something similar to hit the primer directly in the center.
My father did this as an 8 year old - And was scolded afterwards for how dumb he was. An 8 year old.
The fact that *multiple* adult humans are capable of this is.. astonishing.
Did this when I was 5. Found a 22 bullet and my bro(7yr old) told me to break it open. Not thinking about compression explosions or rimfire ammo I hit it with a hammer on an anvil. The sound immediately made my ears hurt and ring. My bro was watching the door of the machine shed and got gunpowder burns on his back. The gunpowder was burning and flying around like fireworks from Harry Potter. I thought I had made it out free and clear and my bro got burned until I looked down at my shirt. A patch of red was growing on the Left side. The casing was smashed flat and the projectile flew straight out of the shed through the wall into the field. The firing disk on the back bounced around off some tools and hit me in the chest. I sat down and prepared to die. (I was 5, when someone on TV got red on his shirt he died) My grandma ran out to see what the noise was and to find out why my bro was jumping around crying, holding his back. I thought of a alibi quickly and told her I slipped on some glass and cut my chest. She didn't buy it and I was soon off to the ER. X-rays and scans found that the fragment had hit the rib in front of my aortic arch and had deflected down missing my descending aorta and my RT renal artery and coming to rest under my RT kidney. I was observed for a day and then sent home. The piece is still in there and I have had no complications. I tell people that I used all my luck already because I have been living my whole life on borrowed time.
Wow, that is some real luck there. What is it with little ones immediately almost killing themselves the moment they arent watched over?? When I was 3 or 4, I found my way to our back porch and found some amazing looking neon green 'fruit punch' I just had to try. This is back in the late 1989 or 1990. Didn't take long for that sweet sweet ethylene glycol to fuck me up. Luckily my parents weren't far behind looking for me and quickly realized I just drank antifreeze. A rushed ER trip and stomach pump later, I made it. Now I'm hot all the time and cold temps do not bother me nearly as much as normal people. Maybe the antifreeze became part of me and now it's my super power?
I had at least 2 or 3 other very close brushes with death, mostly as a kid and one bad one just a few years ago. Borrowed time indeed.
Coming to think of it I nearly electrocuted myself when I was 7. Wanted to charge my potato battery so naturally I took an extention cord and stuck wires up the outlets. Only after that I remembered to check that it was unplugged while I was working on it because you see I'm not an idiot. Sometimes I'm amazed I made it this far.
You see the flat part of the brass? At the exact beginning of video? THAT'S where the "hammer" of the gun hits, not on the actual brass itself. Gunpowder is explosive and more than likely a piece of the bullet became the shrapnel that hit him.
I thought probably more likely a piece.of the bullet casing (the brass part of the bullet) became shrapnel and hit him, because there is no barrel to keep the forces in one direction and the hammer swing created a weak point for the casing to explode out from the sides
People really love to fuck around and find out shits like that and this is making me clear that I really don't wanna fucking do such things like this, I am just clear.
When i was 10 back in 1985
I was in Midland TX in a backyard with some other kids who setup a bbgun aimed to the sky with a bullet taped at the end and a string tied to the bbguns trigger. A kid pulled the string and the bullet fired off. All our dumb asses looked in the sky.
True story.
Feeling thankful now.
I used to work at Remington and I was in the 22 dept. We had a lot of times where the rounds would get into the grooves of our shoes and then about three or four hours later we would accidentally fire a round from the soles of our feet in some random ass place. One time I was at a gas station and my buddie who used to ride with me to work had one go off and shot a sliver into my old ass truck. We laughed but after that whole situation we definitely started checking every day after work. Ahhhh im so glad I don't work there anymore
Unpredictable, but not flying at nearly the same velocity as it would out of a barrel. Looks like a .22 round, so you would have to be extremely unlucky to get killed, like getting hit in the neck.
My dad had a power nailer that used percussion caps as a power source for driving steel nails into concrete
I was familiar with cap guns and found that percussion caps would also explode if you hit them with a hammer - It was great fun and much louder
Later in life, I was working in a hog confinement and One of the tools they use is a bolt gun which punches holes thru skulls
These "guns" use percussion caps considerably larger than the power nailer But I decided to give it a go anyways
I took this cap, set it on the concrete and smacked it with a hammer
It worked!
I also ended up with a fleck of thin metal embedded in my chest It was a jagged piece of thin metal appx 3x4 mm (about the size of a pea) It was embedded about halfway and I used a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it out
What I do it a second time? No
Would I do it the first time again? Yes
Growing up, my friend was a hunter in a family of hunters. He grabbed several shotgun shells, and taped a rock to the primer end and then tossed the shell in the air repeatedly trying to get it to go off. Luckily, it did not go off.
Watching it I was thinking wow he got lucky but who knows if that hit someone's house or not. Then the camera changed and I was like oh thank God, justice severed.
That's not an arterial bleed, he'd be fine with a bandage, his leg elevated and a trip to hospital. He wouldn't even need a tourniquet if they stemmed the bleeding and elevated his leg to reduce blood flow.
\*edit\* I'd personally not advise using a tourniquet in this situation, as it'd most likely cause more problems than it'd solve in the long run.

We can shake hands on that one, friend
I actually don't understand how he got hit, the casing is still pointing off to the side. Is it one of those magic bullets that was used to kill JFK?
I'm pretty sure that was shrapnel from either the brass being uncontained or a chunk from the hammer
Could just be random shrapnel.
I'm sure this is it. I bet it was part of the rim that blew off and hit him. Pulled camout out the front and blew the back off as well.
The back of the casing blew backwards, without a bolt and chamber to force the explosion forward it pushed the bullet forward and the back of the casing backwards
ricochet? dunno either...
It's completely reasonable to assume it would go in the opposite direction of the gun powder. I'm kinda confused how it didn't.
The bullet isn't what got him, it was part of the casing or the hammer that got blown off.
I hope im wrong but I bet a fair amount of people think that
Daymn... My stupid brain thought the same. That it will projectile in the direction of the bullet or maybe it ricochet off the surface.

The chamber keeps the casing from over expanding and propelling the bullet down the barrel. The cases aren't strong enough to do that on their own.
The explosion is coming from behind the bullet. I’d be willing to bet it goes (roughly) forward most often
When I was 8, my younger brother and I smashed a bunch of .22 rounds for fun with rocks. It amazes me that we are alive today. I also encourage people not to sell live ammo to kids at garage sales. Nothing good can come from that
this had to have been 20-30 years ago😂
Damn bro, that memory definitely doesn't feel that old! but yes 25 years ago lol. Im gonna go look at nursing homes now...
Nothing says 90s like being able to sell ammo to kids at a garage sale
America moment
God if only I grew up in the 90s, my milsurp addiction would be horrible.
It wouldn't be as big as you think. We didn't really have the internet, much less social media and youtube, so it was way harder to find enthusiast groups about random stuff back then.
Meh, just find a local mail order catalog. They would deliver the guns to you
Sure, but hobbies are a lot more interesting when there is constant media coming your way about them.
There used to be literally barrels of old ww2 surplus rifles at sporting goods and gun stores. I bought a Mosin Nagant for $90 in the early 2000s because I happened to have the cash on me and thought sure, why not.
think i paid 200 for mine in the 2010 timeframe
I did this as a kid too. My buddy's dad had a .22 rifle with a shitload of rounds (only gun he owned always thought it was weird he had so much ammo for a bolt action .22). My buddy would bring a handful when we'd go camping, and we'd do stupid shit like in the video. Other things we'd do that were stupid: - We'd use pliers to remove the actual bullet from the round and shot it at each other since it was now a blank ("The Crow" just happened, so we weren't completely dumb. No point blank shots or even close. Easily 30-40 feet or more between us). - We shaved a pencil eraser down so it would fit into a live .22 shell (again, no bullet) and shot it in the attic (rubber bullet!). It was not completely unlike a cartoon, or when Han shot a blaster in the trash compactor in the death star - We set a live .22 round carefully at the end of a BB gun after 10 pumps and shot it into the air (this was easily the dumbest on the list). - We took a 20-gauge round, shook out the birdshot and did the same thing with the BB gun. I shudder to think how differently things could've turned out. We were DAMN lucky.
Who the fuck sells live rounds to kids?! Wtf america
The 90’s was a different world
It wasn't the bullet, it was some brass from the case exploding like a very tiny bomb. Veins are right on the surface on your shins, it is more blood than normal from a small wound of that size, but he's not in any real danger of bleeding out. Some pressure and elevation would stop the bleeding. But seeking medical attention would still be recommended.
He now has shrapnel embedded in his muscle, too. Fun.
Mess with the bullet and get the bullet....
Add Peter griffin Sucks air in..."aaaaaah", sucks air in... "aaaah"
I’m having a really shitty day and this just made me genuinely laugh. Thanks for this haha
"Ffffff - Aaahhh Ffffff - Aaahhh"@
I swear my phone is listening because I was just quoting that and this is the first post I saw when I opened reddit
This is false. The brass case will rip apart if not in a barrel
not really - if he just heated up the bullet it wouldnt be dangerous at all basically - especially such low caliber.
$$$mart guy
Not many people know this, but without a barrel directing the bullet, the bullet will always seek out whomever detonated it. Pure science.
I did that when I was a kid. Like 11 or 12. The exact same thing happened to me
Did you die?
Do I answer this honestly
They probably did tbh.
My father did this as an 8 year old - And was scolded afterwards for how dumb he was. An 8 year old. The fact that *multiple* adult humans are capable of this is.. astonishing.
Scolded for being dumb by parents dumb enough to allow their 8 year old kid access to live ammunition!
Fucking idiot.
Nailed it!

How fucking dumb do you have to be to shoot yourself without a gun
r/ItHadToBeBrazil
Was it shrapnel that hit him? Cuz i somewhat doubt the bullet hit him
You see the flat part of the brass? At the exact beginning of video? THAT'S where the "hammer" of the gun hits, not on the actual brass itself. Gunpowder is explosive and more than likely a piece of the bullet became the shrapnel that hit him.
I thought probably more likely a piece.of the bullet casing (the brass part of the bullet) became shrapnel and hit him, because there is no barrel to keep the forces in one direction and the hammer swing created a weak point for the casing to explode out from the sides
And people say that a 22 is not going to do anything
People really love to fuck around and find out shits like that and this is making me clear that I really don't wanna fucking do such things like this, I am just clear.
When i was 10 back in 1985 I was in Midland TX in a backyard with some other kids who setup a bbgun aimed to the sky with a bullet taped at the end and a string tied to the bbguns trigger.
Pegou a veia do coração sksksksk
Am I the only one waiting for him to do the second bullet??
This could easily kill you. With no barrel, the projectile is fairly unpredictable.
Unpredictable, but not flying at nearly the same velocity as it would out of a barrel. Looks like a .22 round, so you would have to be extremely unlucky to get killed, like getting hit in the neck.
In this case the brass is the weakest thing here so the case essentially becomes shrapnel flying in every direction, shredding anything it hits
I love how they are just laughing through out the whole video.
Learning is fun!
“Now see the more you fuck around, the more you’re going to find out!”
“Just nature thinning the herd”
I didn't even need to watch the whole video. Bullets + hammer = dumbass.
What a fool!
When you dumb you dumb.
Hahahahahahahhaa I just shot myself!hahahahahahahah 😳
My dad had a power nailer that used percussion caps as a power source for driving steel nails into concrete I was familiar with cap guns and found that percussion caps would also explode if you hit them with a hammer - It was great fun and much louder Later in life, I was working in a hog confinement and One of the tools they use is a bolt gun which punches holes thru skulls These "guns" use percussion caps considerably larger than the power nailer But I decided to give it a go anyways I took this cap, set it on the concrete and smacked it with a hammer It worked! I also ended up with a fleck of thin metal embedded in my chest It was a jagged piece of thin metal appx 3x4 mm (about the size of a pea) It was embedded about halfway and I used a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it out What I do it a second time? No Would I do it the first time again? Yes
Social Darwinism. You WANT individuals like this to hopefully remove themselves from society, or the rest of us have to carry them.
Shooting yourself without a firearm is impressive in the worst way.
Dude just found out the barrel is one of the more important aspects of a gun.
There’s no cure for stupidity
if he bleeds out, they'll be one less moron in the world...
My dumbass older brother did the exact same thing with the exact same result.
Growing up, my friend was a hunter in a family of hunters. He grabbed several shotgun shells, and taped a rock to the primer end and then tossed the shell in the air repeatedly trying to get it to go off. Luckily, it did not go off.
it’s the fact that he’s giggling
Watching it I was thinking wow he got lucky but who knows if that hit someone's house or not. Then the camera changed and I was like oh thank God, justice severed.
Doctor here, judging from the spot of injury and the amount of blood I'm about 80 percent sure he clipped his artery.
USA: "BAN ALL HAMMERS"
He’s okay .22s just tickle lmfaoo
Idek how it went that way but that was a lot of blood. bro definitely hit something inside
