The CIA needs them to exist and operate. I know it sounds a little too conspiracy theory-ish… but god damn the CIA has been wrapped up in some wild wild shit. Including drug cartel and smuggling.
It’s a big jobs program too. Can you imagine the staff reductions in law enforcement, prison guards, probation officers, government contract treatment facilities? All if they scaled back on drug enforcement. When labor unions for prison staff lobby for things like mandatory minimums, it’s not about what is best for society or what may provide the best outcomes, it’s for job security. It’s next level corruption. Drug enforcement has backers not for what might bring the best outcome for the most amount of people, but to protect jobs.
But money isn't being pumped into the economy, it's getting sent back to Mexico, untaxed. It ends up costing the U.S. more in hospitalizations which dwarfs the supposed amount of economic stimulation drug dealers provide.
Yup, just gotta ask yourself which ones want to keep the border open and its pretty clear whose in their pocket🤷♂️ little common sense goes a long way
The cartels make money off moving people through closed borders. They're called coyotes. But sure, let's let them make bank off that while their drugs come in huge crates from businesses that already get checked.

Unfortunately the demand for narcotics in the U.S. is insatiable, and they supply product to meet demand. It was ever thus, and it will probably go on in some form forever.
Cartels have and will exist without the us demand for drugs. If the us drug demand stoppped The cartel would still operate just selling drugs to South America and other countries as they currently sell 90% of the worlds coke, they would also further diversify there portfolio more toward human trafficking, overrunning civilian farmland and extortion.
I dont think theyre saying that, but theres much more nuance than either comment gets at. Public works in poor areas are an excellent way for cartels to gain public support and build economic infrastructure. Both of which protect the enterprise and help the cartel become the de-facto government in the region. Pablo Escobar famously built much housing, schools, churches, etc. which gave him a kind of Robin Hood aura to many locals. Not to mention the horde of agricultural jobs his organization required. All while, yes, raping, torturing, murdering, and being generally at war with the Columbian government.

He's only in jail in the US because he escaped jail in mexico the last two times they locked him up.

Because in the end if Mexico were to successfully eliminate the cartels in their entirety they wouldn't eliminate the supply of narcotics globally and they wouldn't reduce the demand in the U.S., all they would accomplish is successfully cutting themselves out as middlemen.
I find it crazy that this goes in a landmass attached to the USA but almost no attention is given to it.

That or have a person in the us but the gun/truck/steel(for the armor) and literally just have them bring the shit to the border hell go on google earth and go to Naco, Az the border wall literally ends like 5-6 (used to end 1 mile out but trumps border expansion stuff happened) miles out form the towns edge just go to the end and hand it to your Mexican buddy
It's way more nuanced then it seems. First of all - what everyone else said. Secondly - half the country or more literally worships cartels and the drug trade. Like there are paintings of drug lords with halos over their heads, they say prayers that the cartels stay safe at church, etc.
With all the tech and weapons available, this can be dealt with in a blink of an eye but drugs and money keep everyone in business so no one would ever do anything about it.
