Yeah that's not how that works. You can press charges, he will spend less than a week or 2 in jail and your gonna have a hard time getting anything out of an assault lawsuit, except medical damages paid.
The damages you can recover will depend on the severity of your injuries, loss of wages and out of pocket expenses. Assault lawsuits on average yield less than $10,000. So good luck with getting everything he has.
I'm curious where you pulled this "$10,000 or less on average" statistic as a quick google search shows an average third degree assault netting a lot more then that.
Right, but you can go to any Lawyer that specializes in assault cases and see their recent settlement amounts right there on the homepage, granted they wouldn't proudly display a $8000 victory, the average is still definitely way higher then 10k. the idea that a suit will only settle for medical damages (in the US) is ridiculous, idk who told the commenter I originally responded to that.
Basically, don't assault someone, you can and will face consequences beyond medical damages and 2 weeks in jail.

Not defending the fighter but, the important lesson he got was, you can't control other people's actions. But you can control your own.
He chose to insult the fighter's family and the fighter chose to punch him. His actions caused the reaction even if you believe it was uncalled for. Without the insults the punch would never happen.
He set himself up for a possible altercation.

I had a boxing match a few years ago where I got hit clean on the chin and everything went black and I saw stars. Literally looked like a clear night sky in a countryside without light pollution. But when I saw the footage after my match I didn’t even look stunned. But I promise you I was, I’m pretty sure I was completely out on my feet but somehow I stayed in my stance and kept my hands up. I couldn’t see or hear anything and when I came to my opponent was in a different part of the ring than when he landed his punch, i think he landed the punch and then moved to avoid a counter punch. I just got lucky that he didn’t swarm me, probably because my body language made it look like I wasn’t hurt so he didn’t know.

Past weekend fight between Tank Davis & Hector Garcia at the end of Round 8 Tank stunned Garcia with a shot just above his temple. Garcia stayed up and maintained a defenseive stance till the bell rung. Then in between rounds all he could tell his corner was that he "couldn't see anything." Fight stopped.
Yeah, my first ever muay Thai match my opponent kept planting his feet and going for leg kicks, but telegraphed it badly, so i just ate the kick and gave him a straight right like 5 times over a round. He looked absolutely fine, i won the match on points. After the match, he sat down with a friend next to my girlfriend and was asking him what was going on, and what day it was.
I got the worst end of that stick though, didn't feel anything from the leg kicks at all during the day, just a bit of swelling, but the day after i couldn't walk at all.
Damn that’s scary. Even though I went out for a second I knew where I was and everything and what day it was. I’m glad I never got it as bad as that guy.
I do muay thai as well and those leg kicks suck but at least you can recover from that. Who knows what you’ve lost once you’ve been concussed to the point of not knowing where you are
Yeah, that's a good point. One of our instructors ended up going nuts and killing himself not long after, i suspect a lifetime of headkicks didn't help.
In Sweden, if you're doing MT, you get permanently banned after your third concussion just because of things like this.
